These slides have been made by Alex Gunn and Sons, a 20th century lantern and slide maker based in Melbourne. The slides were produced for Val Morgan and Sons, a cinema advertising slide maker. Val (Valentine) Morgan (1867-1952) established a business in 1894 and by 1914 was making slides for cinemas. By 1921 the business was a company producing slides for movie houses and by the 1930s was the largest business of its type in Victoria. The company also produced the Morgans Street Directory for over 50 years in the 20th century. The company was sold in 1987. It is believed that these slides were shown in the Capitol Theatre in Warrnambool as the advertisements feature a local business, Fletts Plumbing. Most of the slides advertise Metters and Everhot bathroom and kitchen appliances, obtainable from the Warrnambool firm, going under the various trade names of Flett Brothers, F. Flett and Co and Fletts of 147 Lava Street (with ‘Lava’ spelt as ‘Laver’ in one ad). John Flett, boat and bridge builder, settled in Warrnamool in 1868 and it was his son William who first established a tinsmith and plumbing business in Warrnambool in the 1880s in a shop in Timor Street. His sons, Frederick and Charles, continued on the business after the father’s death in a Lava Street site until its demise in the 1950s. These items are of great interest as examples of cinema advertising slides used in cinemas in the mid 20th century and perhaps in the 1930s. The items have local significance as the slides feature advertisements for the business of the Flett family who were local plumbers and fitters. The slides are also of local interest as they are believed to have been used in the Capitol Theatre in Kepler Street, still operating today. These are eleven glass slides produced for cinema advertising in the mid 20th century. Three of the slides are blank and eight contain coloured images and printing advertising the products of kitchen and bathroom items and the local Warrnambool supplier. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. From Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan 1996 by Andrew Ward: In 1888, John Leek, a trainer, owned Lot 15, measuring one and three quarter acres, in Booran Road, north side between Glen Eira and Neerim Roads. The land backed onto the Caulfield Racecourse Reserve. NAV was £45. In 1890 Leek built for his residence, a ten roomed brick house on the site. NAV was £200. Leek was the owner/trainer of "Ingliston" who won the Caulfield Cup in 1900. Upon the horse's death in 1901, Leek is understood to have defied tradition by spending £20 on boots for the "ragged urchins in Bourke Street" instead of "shouting" at the bar. By 1899, the property was owned and occupied by Alfred Merrill, a dentist and was known as "Andover". NA V had decreased to £ll0. By 1910, Leslie Macdonald, a gentleman had purchased the property and renamed it "Moidart". In 1910-11 Macdonald sold it to John Robertson. The property had extensive wood stables on its north-east boundary and several other outbuildings. The house continued to be described as "Brick, ten rooms" as it was in 1926 when it was owned and occupied by John Arthur, a managing director. The land measured la.2r.31p. and had a NAV of £235. Nine people lived there. In 1926, Arthur also owned the adjoining Lot 16. Lord Lodge is a thoroughbred racehorse training complex adjacent to Caulfield Racecourse, established in 1890. The area immediately around the racecourse has been associated with horse racing activities and businesses servicing the industry since the development of the racecourse in late the 19th century. Lord Lodge was named by the present occupants after the champion racehorse Lord who was stabled there in the 1950s. In the early 20th century the property was known as 'Andover' and subsequently 'Moidart'. The site consists of a single storey brick Italianate villa, jockeys' quarters, stables and open day yards with direct access to Caulfield racecourse from the rear of the property. The villa of 10 rooms on bluestone foundations was constructed in 1890 by John Leek, a horse trainer who purchased the newly subdivided land in 1888. The house has many Victorian Italianate or Boom Style features although it is more modest than many villas of its style. It has an asymmetrical facade with a faceted bay window and a prominent central tower with low pitch pyramidal roof that provides a clear view of the racecourse. Other characteristic features include stilted segmented arches, bracketed eaves, stucco wall finish and cast cement ornamentation. A room has been added on the north-facing verandah in sympathetic style and finish. Internally the rooms are substantially intact with original marble fireplaces and intricate ceiling roses and cornices. An entrance toward the rear of the southern side of the house is said to be where the stable hands, jockeys and other staff lined up for their meals. In the southeast corner of the property, backing directly on to Caulfield racecourse, is a substantial late Victorian timber stable, probably constructed in the 1890s but first appearing on the property title in 1910. The stable has 12 stalls, a loft and brick pavement and jerkin head roof form with varnished pine-lined ceiling carried on a chamfered timber frame. It has an original roof lantern. The doors of the stalls are not the original sliding doors but swing doors obtained from a barn at Epsom Racecourse in Mordialloc prior to demolition. Outside the gambrel roof has fretted barges but the building is otherwise utilitarian. Timber throughout the stalls has been worn by chewing and rubbing of horses over the century of its use. In the southern half of the property are open day yards where the racehorses are kept during the day. The red brick, single storey jockeys' quarters to the rear of the villa were probably built around 1950. A small brick, possibly late Victorian structure on the eastern boundary thought to have originally been a gardening shed, has been converted to a stable of two stalls. Modern concrete brick stables fill the northeast portion of the property. At the front of the property two Moreton Bay Figs (Ficus macrophylla), probably planted in the late 19th century, provide shade for horses in the day yards. In the 1890s John Leek sold the property, relocating his training facility to one of the newly established racecourses at Mentone or Mordialloc (Epsom). By 1899, the property was owned and occupied by Alfred Merrill, a dentist, who named the property 'Andover'. In 1910 it was purchased by Leslie McDonald, a gentleman, and renamed 'Moidart'; sold in 1910-1911 to John Robertson; and again in 1926 to John Arthur, a racehorse owner. The Victorian Amateur Turf Club purchased the property in the late 1930s and since this time has been leased to racehorse trainers. It is unclear whether the property operated as a training facility between 1899 - 1926. Several notable trainers and jockeys are associated with Lord Lodge. The best known is Arthur 'Scobie' Breasley, Australia's most successful jockey who was apprenticed to trainer Pat Quinlan at Lord Lodge (then 'Moidart') from 1928 - 1935. Breasley rode winners of the Caulfield Cup in four successive years 1942-45 and again in 1952. John Leek, the original owner of Lord Lodge trained Ingliston, the 1900 Caulfield Cup winner. The Adlake Non Sweating Lamp "THE ADLAKE NON SWEATING LAMP CHICAGO" Adlake is a shortened name of the "Adams and Westlake" company. They began doing business in 1857 in Chicago. They manufactured railroad supplies and hardware in Chicago. In 1927, they moved to Elkhart, Indiana, where they remain in business today. The difference between "lamp" and "lantern" is that the lamp is meant to be hung on a post or a hook during use and the lantern is hand-held and only used when a person is directing traffic. It has four lenses- two amber and two blue. Adams & Westlake, also known as A&W or Adlake, became a dominant maker of short-globe lanterns and their #200, #250, and plain “Kero” (sometimes known as #300 or #400) models were sold by the thousands to the entire range of railroads. Short-globe lanterns came about because manufacturers figured out how to get a lantern to burn properly with a shorter combustion chamber, which allowed lanterns to be shorter and cheaper. Adams & Westlake began selling #200 Kero lanterns around 1921 and they sold well, the #250 Kero lantern was released in the mid 1920’s as an improvement over the #200 version, with a new burner design. FInally, around 1930 Adams & Westlake released models marked simply “Kero” but are sometimes known as the #300 or #400 models, which are further refinements. The #200, #250, and “Kero” models all look very similar in design and in fact they are all pretty much the same frame design with a couple of minor differences on the later “Kero” models. Short globe lanterns are still very easy to find because they were produced well into the mid 1900s. Adams & Westlake short globe lanterns can usually be dated by looking for a two-part date code on the bottom of the lantern. The first digit will be 1,2,3, or 4 followed by a dash and then a two digit number. A rare program from the time when films were shown at the Athenaeum Theatre while Frank Talbot leased the theatre. The program has a managerial announcement from Talbot announcing the new policy: "under which the theatre will be devoted exclusively to English and Australian pictures". The company supplying the British films was called British Dominion Films Ltd. Talbot also stated: "It will be part of the managerial policy to screen such Australian films as may be available". The films were preceded by "The Herald" news reel and "The Daily Dozen at the Zoo". The theatre orchestra, playing before and during interval was conducted by Mr J Kost. The music included "Tales of Vienna Woods by Johann Strauss and selections from Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance". The program represents a time when films were shown at the Athenaeum Theatre. Records indicate that graphic entertainments started with magic lantern slides in the 1890s and continued with silent movies. The first full-feature film shown in Australia was "The Story of the Kelly Gang" in 1906 at the Athenaeum Theatre and the first talkie to be shown in Victoria, "The Jazz Singer" shown in 1928. Thornton-Pickard was a British camera manufacturer which was established in 1888 and closed in 1939. The company was based in Altrincham, near Manchester, and was an early pioneer in the development of the camera industry. The Thornton-Pickard company was founded by John Edward Thornton and Edgar Pickard in Manchester,. Also referred to as a Magic Lantern Projector, the Ruby enlarger was used to project images from glass negatives using a variety of light sources and eventually adapted for electricity.. This lantern was made by Thomas Ward in 1884 for his daughter Alice Fawthrop Ward to see her way to the little church Wellington Road, where she played the organ for the mid week service. An early example of lighting used in the late 1800s. Additionally this particular light was made by Thomas Ward who was a part of a prominent family in Portland at the time. Thomas was part of the crew that went out to the Admella Shipwreck. The above mentioned church was built in 1870, and is now part of a private residence. Metal lantern painted cream. One of the panels is a functioning door to allow candle access, door is secured by a thin pin with a ring pull to slide pin up and down. Top is domed with a decorative waves cap. This glass slide depicts a group of school children standing in Queen Victoria Park (previously Beechworth Botanic Gardens), circa 1900. Queen Victoria Park was first secured in 1858 by the Beechworth Council with the assistance of the Central Board of Health (CBH). The CBH was a firm believer in the socially beneficial effects of parks and other recreation areas which is why they aided the council in securing the parkland. the council held a local competition for the design of the park and decided on a plan called "Better late than never" by Hungarian nobleman, J.A. Rochlitz. The first non-native trees were planted in 1861 and have since been heritage listed on the National Trust's register of significant trees. There are nine trees located in Queen Victoria Park that are currently on the National Trust's register. These are the Loblolly Pine, Italian Cypress, Shore Pine, and the Big Cone Pine. These trees hold significance as they date back to 1875 and show rare and localised examples of these types of species which are not seen in many other places in Victoria. This glass slide captures the driveway into Mayday Hills Mental Asylum formally known as the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum circa 1900. The slide depicts the driveway lined with an elevated landscape featuring tall trees, shrubbery of different varieties and well shaped bushes. The Mayday Hills Mental Asylum was constructed between 1864 and 1867 to the designs by the Public Works Department (PWD). The decommissioned Asylum was one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria and consisted of sixty-seven buildings, one thousand two hundred patients and five hundred staff members. The Asylum was predominately inhabited by long-stay patients but there were active out-patients. The Asylum was one of the first asylums to focus on treatment and rehabilitation instead of institutional confinement. At the Asylum, active work was considered imperative and workshops were located near the male accommodations and laundries and drying yards near the female accommodation. The Asylum closed in 1995 and was sold to La Trobe University before being closed and sold again in 2011 to a private owner.This glass slide captures social and historical significance as it represents a one small part of a much larger and pivotal location within Beechworth history. The slide was captured right as the Band was passing RTP Laycock Saddler. The location is also significant as Ford Street is, and was when this slide was taken, considered one of the two main streets of Beechworth. Today Ford Street is lined with updated shopfronts.
