This book was awarded to Lilian Frances Millard for an Essay written in the second form. Lilian entered the Ballarat College Girls' School in January of 1883 at the age of 11. Parent/Guardian listed in the original register as Edwin Millard, residing at 46 Pleasant St.During 1877 - 1891 Ballarat College accepted enrolments from female students. The school holds the original register of this period and notes that Lilian Millard entered the school in 1883 when she was 11. Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. In August 1940, 13th Light Horse (Gippsland) converted from horse to mechanised initially as 13th Motor Regiment then 13th Armoured Regiment. Trained in Victoria and as the Japanese threat to the mainland declined the regiment was disbanded in October 1943. After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. This spoon has been produced as a souvenir of Brauer College in Warrnambool. It would have been issued to, or bought by Brauer College students, ex-students, teachers and other community members interested in the school. Brauer College has its origins in the establishment of Warrnambool Technical School in Timor Street, Warrnambool in 1913. It later became Warrnambool Technical College and the Technical School section was re-located to Caramut Road in Warrnambool in the 1970s. In 1990 the name was changed to Brauer College (named after Dr Brauer, a prominent local doctor and supporter of secondary education In Warrnambool). This item is retained as an example of a souvenir spoon associated with a prominent educational institution in Warrnambool – Brauer College. William Henderson was Minister of St Andrews Kirk at the time of writing. The very strong Presbyterian roots of Ballarat College were a legacy of this man.
