Miss Jane Elizabeth (Jean) Pearson is second from the left. From c1927 - c1950 Miss Pearson had the cake and confectionery shop at 147 Union Road. It was later a milk bar, next to Henry Jamieson’s radio and electrical shop. Miss Pearson sold Farey’s cakes which were very popular and in a trellised-off section also served morning and afternoon teas. Her sisters often helped. Silversticks, white knights, licorice straps were among a wide selection of sweets to be bought for 1d. – or even ½d. Jean was one of a large family born to John William Pearson and Agnes Yeaman. Jean was born at Riddell's Creek in c1884. She died in 1966. She had 3 brothers and a total of 6 sisters. Lillias Irene and Grace Stewart died in infancy or childhood, so the other sisters in the photo were (not necessarily in order): Ethel Agnes born in 1885, who married James Charles Robertson; Catherine Myra born in 1887, unmarried; May Dempster born 1891, unmarried; and Stella Christie born 1897, who married Cecil Hunt Aston in 1928. Jean was in business as a confectioner at 3 High Street, Malvern in 1927; in Union Road 1941-1949 and resided (presumably in retirement) at 37 Mayston Street, Hawthorn in 1954. At the later address May and Catherine are also listed variously in 1954 and 1963. (Ref: electoral rolls). The Hawthorn address was the 'family home' - address of John William Pearson who died in 1944, appointing Jean as his executrix. A narrative of Miss Enez Domec-Carre's work with Melbourne Legacy. Appears to be text of a speech made on her retirement which was on 31 December 1970. Enez was the supervisor of the girls classes held at Legacy House for 36 years. She organised many annual demonstrations and was held in high regard by Legacy. The library at Legacy House is named in her honour. See also a newspaper article at 00978 which outlines her achievements, a summary of her career at 00458 and 00129. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy as assistant to Mrs Gilles (wife of a Legatee) later became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Miss Lillie Louisa (Lil) Willaton, and her callisthenics students in 1930s celebrating during competitions in Ballarat in which they were successful. Lil held weekly classes in Surrey Hills, Box Hill and nearby suburbs for a number of decades. Students include Nancy Scott, Nancy Hayes, Sylvia McGill and Vera Willaton. Lil was born in Long Gully, Bendigo in 1904 daughter of Herbert Charles Leopold Willaton and Lillie Jenkins. She had 3 brothers and 3 sisters, one brother dying in infancy. The family lived in Lille Street, Surrey Hills. Both her parents and one sister died in Surrey Hills. In the 1920s Lil gained her A.L.C.M. (Australian London College of Music) in singing and made a career of teaching gymnastics with calisthenics, rhythmic movement etc. She arranged the music and lyrics for items and also designed the costumes, as well as conducting the physical training which culminated in annual concerts held in Box Hill and other town halls. Lil married Leslie Reginald Stephenson in 1934 and they lived at 36 Union Road, Surrey Hills. She died in July 1995 and is buried in Buried Box Hill Cemetery - CE-126-0001. No cards. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5779002 Barham House was built in 1850 by Edward Bernard Green (1809-1861) a successful land speculator. It was a magnificent residence built in the regency style to the design of architect John Gill and set in landscaped grounds of nine acres and included an ancient Swiss cottage. When Green died in 1861, his executor was his neighbour, William Nicholson (1816-65) who owned Fernleigh immediately to the north in Grey Street, but actually lived in Barham House during his time as Premier of Victoria 1859 - 1860 until his death in 1865. In 1866 Richard Twentyman purchased Fernleigh from the Nicholson Estate and a year later he married Nicholson's widow, Sarah. Both remained at Barham House until June 1870. In 1871 the building was substantially remodelled and re-named Eildon.
