The wedding was in Ceylon, and later the dress travelled with the happy couple to Australia. In total the dress has been worn four times. It missed one generation and then was sent to Adelaide for the wartime wedding of Sharlene's aunt, Mrs Hubbard. It returned to Melbourne for the wedding of Sharlene's mother Mrs Barry. The elaborately rouched dress with tight bodice and slight bustle effect was altered for the 1941 wedding.Used in 1950's for third wedding. Dress altered from the original dress made in 1886. Miss Elaine Howell was born in Beechworth. Her mother was born in Stanley and her father in Myrtleford. Her mother's father was born in England and her other grandparents in Australia. She is one of four daughters. Miss Howell completed school and went on to the Convent to do her leaving. She then learnt shorthand typing and got a job at the shire where she was the clerk to the Shire Secretary. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Miss Elaine Howell provides an insight into a life of an educated Beechworth woman in around the 1950's she also provides a perspective from the town shire (the complaints and plans that occurred throughout the year). She went to two schools to further her education and learnt how to shorthand type. This skill provided her with a job at shire as clerk to the shire secretary. This is the only job she ever had. Her story also offer significant insight into Beechworth life and the dances and job prospects at the time (which was not a lot in the 60's). This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. Made for Chris Neyland by Rene Densham when he was born in 1953 and later given to Running Stitch by Lois Densham who is Chris Neylands aunt. The quilt was made from scraps of woollen fabric from clothing used in the family. It was used in Chris' cot or pram when he was an infant. Lois can remember the dark green fabric coming from a jacket she once wore and the blue tartan pieces from a skirt worn by Rene, her mother. Lois also remembers her mother being "a better piano player than a cook or a sewer" and " made in the tradition of making do from a family who knew how". The McLean family, Hector John McLean and Louisa Frances (nee Green) and six daughters lived in Eltham during the period 1930 to 1934 inclusive. Lived in the former Evelyn Hotel at the time it was destroyed by fire in 1931. In reminiscences provided by daughter Edith, she recalls that her mother always blamed herself for the fire. When she finished cooking on the old wood stove she would always clean up and take the ashes outside in an ash pan to bury them for safety. She believed she must have dropped some oas she walked across the back verandah or the breeze caiught some sparks as she opened the door. It was a very hot day. She believed that they must have fallen down some cracks in the floor boards and smouldered on papers and rubbish in the cellar. The back of the photo is inscribed "To dear Lizzie with love and best wishes from Nellie, Xmas 1911" - Lizzie being Elizabeth Ann Shillinglaw, daughter of Phillip and Sarah Shillinglaw born 1879. The woman in the photo appears to be aged approximately 40 years and is dressed and with a hair style typical of the fashion of 1911. This would make her birth year around the early 1870s. The only Nellie present in the family tree as currently understood is Helen (Nellie) Lyon born 1897 who came to Eltham from Mildura with her mother and brothers in 1913. She married Arthur Edward Bird however she is a generation younger and the dates do not fit. The only other known Nell is Ellen May Bird, daughter of George and Janet Bird, born 1892 so she too is a generation too young. These are the Probate papers for Patrick Mahony, a farmer from Wangoom who died in 1894. He left an estate of £995 and personal effects worth £138. The estate was to be administered by the two sons, William and Timothy in trust for another son, Michael Mahony. The wife Margaret was granted three acres of land, £25 a year and ‘the choice of two cows out of my stock’. The daughter Johanna was to receive the same benefits after the death of her mother. Patrick Mahony, being illiterate, signed his will with a cross. Tait collection: item 12 of 62This document is of interest as it concerns a local farmer, Patrick Mahony and a local lawyer, William Ardlie. The latter had a practice in Warrnambool for the best part of seventy years, firstly in Timor Street and then in Kepler Street. He was a prominent resident in Warrnambool. The document was originally in the hands of the law clerk, Thomas Goodall and it was passed on to lawyers occupying the Kepler Street premises until it was found in the buildings once used by the law firm of Mackay Taylor. This is a piece of parchment paper, folded in two with writing in black ink on all four pages. There is a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria attached with a green ribbon and three red stamps of the Master in Equity in the Supreme Court. In 1960, at public events commemorating the Centenary of Kew, the Mayoress, Mrs Doris Dickinson wore an evening dress, elbow-length white kid gloves and a scrolled silver necklace studded with cubic Zirconias. The Historical Society now hold all three items in its collection. The dress and gloves were donated by Judith Goodes, and this necklace by Janet Webster, twin daughters of Doris and William (Bill) Dickinson. Janet Webster recounts that she had purchased the necklace at a store in Collins Street and loaned it to her mother to wear at these civic events. Inscription on the back of the photograph identifies the subject as Sophie May Hogan, age 5, and says that the original photograph was taken in April 1912, when Sophie was a flowergirl at her Aunt Mary's wedding in Ballarat. Sophie was born in Linton in 1906, a daughter of James (Jim) Hogan and Sarah Hogan née Walker. She married Alec Wheeler in 1941. Sophie moved to Skipton with her parents when she was six but maintained contact with her Linton grandparents and cousins throughout her life. Sophie died in 2006. The six Mitchell sisters were the daughters of Frederick Mitchell and his first wife Jane McDonagh. They were born between 1862 and 1876. Their mother Jane died in childbirth in 1878. It is not clear who is who in the photograph. Elizabeth Jane Mitchell, the oldest sister in the photograph, married Oscar Ball. Louisa Mary Mitchell married John James Jennings. The photograph is from the album of Ivy Child. The woman standing LHS is Ethel Child, wife of Ted Child and mother of Ivy. The woman with her hands in her pockets would be the mother of the two boys as she has appeared with them in other photographs. The building is the Child Family Homestead in Childs Road, Kalorama. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. Worn by Rose Caplan who was the donor, Ida Gouttman's mother. Immigration records show that Morris and Rose (Rosa) Caplan emigrated to Australia from England in 1910 on the Orsova. Rose died from a sudden illness in 1928 while she and her husband were travelling in Europe and had just visited her father in Latvia. Rose was buried in Berlin. Rose and Morris' daughter Ida, who had kept the shawl, married Leon Gouttman in Sydney in 1938. Ida was an active member of the Brighton Historical Society when she moved back to Melbourne later in life. Photograph of Queen Elizabeth II on a state visit to Melbourne in February 1963 receiving flowers from Christine Kelson, a junior legatee. An article in the Legacy's Weekly Bulletin on 26 February mentions the details. Christine was 14 years old and daughter of the late Signaller Arthur Kelson who served with the 9th division in Middle East and who was taken prisoner in North Africa and made a POW in Italy and Germany. Her mother Mrs Dorothy Kelson, served with the AMWAS. From 1949 golf became a regular part of a SHC student's week. With the junior SHC students educated at the Mount Xavier site since 1906, the land adjacent to 'Villa' as it was known, caught the eye of both keen golfer S. J. Weir and Mother Bonaventure Healy. Under their joint direction the golf course took shape, the first to be built and owned by a convent, and on any given Monday of the year could be found teeming with enthusiastic students from Sacred Heart College. The two embroidered pillow shams were made by Betty Stones's mother Daisy (nee Dale) Welsh. A number of crocheted and embroidered articles were donated to Flagstaff Hill Museum by Betty Stone who advised that they cover a period of three generations from Sarah (nee Chamberlain) Lees, Ann (nee Lees) Dale, and Daisy Elvena (nee Dale) Welsh. All three were accomplished needlewomen, both Sarah Lees (born 1844) and her daughter, Ann (1865) these women crocheted a wide variety of articles for use in their homes. Today we have a few surviving examples of their skill that has survived the years.This item and others in the collection donated by Betty Stone are significant for their association with the early Warrnambool pioneering families of Chamberlain, Dale and Lees. These families are listed in the "Pioneers' Register" for Warrnambool Township and Shire, 1835-1900, and published by A.I.G.S. Warrnambool Branch. The item is a fine example of early 20th-century needlework and handmade domestic items.A pair of white pillow shams, rectangular in shape with a shallow scalloped crochet edge. This book belonged to Roma Cameron. Roma Cameron was the daughter of Harry Purchase Cameron and Lilian Gladys (nee Harding). Roma married Ronald Richard Smithin 1944 and is the mother of Lorraine (Mrs Peter Coulton) and Margaret Smith. Harry's father, James Cameron, came to Bellagoogan on Majors Creek in 1882. Bellagoogan was on Majors Creek near Orbost and was the site of the first race course. Like many others at the time, the Camerons bred race horses.Harry died in 1964 aged 75. Roma was the youngest of three siblings: Jean (Mrs John Gavin (Jack) Ralston) and James (Jim) (m. Joan Hossack). This book as an example of school work in the early 20th century. It reflects the the way reading was taught, to young children in Victoria. The Cameron family is prominent in the Orbost district. Eric Boardman Collection The Bubeck family lived at Diggers Rest, Toolernvale Road. Felix Bubeck came to Australia with his mother, father and brother. Felix died in 1917-1918. Felix married Mary Ellen Seuling. Mary Ellen was born in 1861. Mary's father was a blacksmith at Keilor in 1858-1940. He is buried at Keilor Cemetery. Felix and Mary had five daughters: Freida, Daphne, Silvia, Violet, Vera. Bubeck on Alex Lloyd's farm. Frank O'C as a boy, delivered groceries from Eadies. Harry Gorry bid for & purchased on internet auction site. The seller's mother was putting these & other items up for auction. Her father/ the seller's grandfather was Dr. Bruno Koening, a German surgeon detained by Allied forces while fleeing New Guinea in 1941. He was detained & sent to be interned in Camp 3, Tatura. There he met the painter Cesare Vagarini & they became friends, thus 4 years later upon the end of the war Vagarini gave the surgeon the two paintings in thanks & in memory of their friendship. Dr Koening then passed the paintings down to his daughter, where they remained in the family for 60 years. The seller's mother decided it was time to sell & was happy that the paintings went to a good home, as the family was until now unaware of the connection between Vagarini and the Tatura Museum. Harry Gorry just happened to notice a familiar name in an auction that he came across by accident & purchased them for our benefit.
