Document - Trained Nurse Certification booklet, 9/8/1988
The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989.NDSN Trained Nurse Certification booklet. In 1966 the Victorian Parliamentary Library established a newspaper clipping service. This sign, among many created by the Library, provided helpful instruction to Members of Parliament on how they should treat collection material. The Library was managed by a committee of Members of Parliament from 1851 to 2004, when the Library then became part of the Department of Parliamentary Services.Sign issued by the Library Committee advising Members to not remove newspaper clippings from files. Used to rain ambulance staff in the detection and management of patient heart rhythms. Simulator was hooked up to operational monitor defribulator and operated so that the monitor defribulator simulated patient rhythms of different types. This particular unit was used at Frankston South and by the Metropolitan Ambulance Service Regional Training Unit. The first version was issued 1/11/1989. see item 8875. Was collected from the depot 1/2001 when a new version of the Guidelines was issued. In use from c1990 to 2001 as a sample copy and loaned to new conductors. The Bendigo based Sander family business Sander and Sons, were producers of eucalyptus oil/extract in the 19th and 20th centuries. Carl Sandner established Sander and Sons Eucalyptus Distillery in 1875. It operated until 1967Instructions included in a box of Superba Skin Food. One page with black printing included claims made after use of product and directions for use. Notes that an application for Registration of the distinctive label was made on January 18 1907. St John's was first established in Melbourne in 1883 to teach First Aid. The first class of 30 ladies were trained in Bendigo by a visiting surgeon instructor and completed their First Aid course in November 1886. In 1888 the first stretcher and hand ambulance was established in Bendigo and a request was made for mobile ambulances to be operated by men. Women were deemed only suitable for home nursing and hygiene instruction. By 1902 , in response to the high level of mining accidents, men were being trained in First Aid and the first St John's branch was started at Eaglehawk in 1903. In 1988, as part of a Defence of Mainland Australian policy, defence of facilities of strategic importance in northern Australia were allocated to Army Reserve units. ‘A’ Squadron was allocated the defence of Tindal Air Force base located 15 KM outside Katherine in Northern Territory. Consequently the Squadron deployed on Exercise ‘Northern Explorer’ to gain first-hand knowledge of operating conditions for mounted and dismounted patrolling in the area.Colour photograph of Lance Corporal R. In 1961 the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee determined that there should be only one approved Ski School in the Tourist Area. The franchise for 1961 was granted to Alpine Developments Pty. Ltd', which also had the franchise for Tow Bar operations. The Ski School headquarters were based at the canteen adjacent to the T-Bar drive station. The Management Committee also determined that "No person shall be permitted to give instruction in skiing for any money or material consideration without the prior approval of the Management Committee". The Alpine Developments franchise was extended for the 1963, 1964 & 1965 seasons. In August 1964, the Committee declared that it was satisfied with the present Ski School operated by Alpine Developments, and is most anxious to retain it at Fells Creek. They declared that they were particularly happy with the standard of teaching and control achieved by the School director, Mr. Siegfried Haberzettl, who was at the resort for his fifth year, and to whose leadership and direction the success of the School was largely due. The Committee therefore arranged to extend the franchise for a further three years after 1965, and thereafter the franchise was to be continuous on twelve months' notice of termination from either party. In the 1960s and 1970s, the majority of Ski Instructors were Austrian. Lorna Clarke was one of the first Australians to gain the highest Austrian qualification, the Staatlicher Bundessportheim. She was employed at the Falls Creek Ski School in 1964. In the 1980s there was a push for more Instructor training to take place in Australia to enable local instructors to gain higher qualifications without having to travel to Europe. During this period, George Pirmoser and later Brad Spalding were Ski School Directors and Bridgford was the still the owner of Alpine Developments (Holdings) Pty. Ltd. continued to push for training of Australian instructors. Brad Spalding took over as Ski School Director in 1986 and along with his partner, Melissa Landregger developed a wide range of programs including children’s and women’s programs, private lessons and multi-day clinics for which Falls Creek Ski School is renowned until the present.This image is significant because it depicts some of the early instructors at Falls Creek Ski School.A coloured photo of a group of instructors at Falls Creek Ski School. MIM SODERGREN and the WOMEN'S SKI PROGRAM The Women's Ski Program at Falls Creek and Thredbo was initiated in the mid 1980s. One of the most popular instructors involved in this program was Mim (Mariam) Sodergren. Mim developed innovative, specialized ski programs for women and children in both Australia and the United States. She and her husband Mike originated from Tahoma, California, USA. They spent 17 years of their lives without a summer, working as ski instructors in Lake Tahoe during the northern winters, and then they’d head off to Falls Creek and Thredbo in Australia. Mim and Mike Sodergren were both inspiring instructors at Falls Creek Snowsports School, dedicated to education and had a deep-seated passion for fostering an inclusive Snowsports community. Tragically Mim and Mike were among the 18 people killed 30 July 1977 in Thredbo, Australia, when a landslide tore through Thredbo’s ski resort village and demolished two staff lodges. In 1997 the Australian Professional Snowsport Instructors (APSI) established the Sodergren scholarships in memory of Mim and Mike. The Sodergren Scholarship recognises the rising potential of Snowsport instruction within Australian ski resorts and allows the recipients to further their professional development by providing all training free of charge for one season. The women’s program still operates at Falls Creek and is a "heartfelt tribute to the memory of Mim Sodergren, a beloved 1980s instructor and mentor who tragically lost her life in the Thredbo landslide in 1997. Designed by women, for women, and inspired by the enduring passion of Mim and her partner, Mike, who was also an instructor, this program is a wonderful opportunity to learn to ski in a friendly and supportive environment, just as Mim envisioned." (Falls Creek Website 2024). Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Page 1:- Dawn Ski Club is formed by families with the aim of facilitating skiing for children. After the April meeting it took Dawn Daddies some time to round up many juniors aged from 2½ to 7½ years old. Functional object - Three early telephones
Until 1960 there were no telephones in Falls Creek. The only access to a phone was at Rocky Valley Camp where the State Electricity Commission (SEC) had an extensive network to Mount Beauty, Bogong and the other camps such as Clover power station and Howman's Gap. There were test points with a phone beside the road where contact could be made to the office in Mount Beauty. The SEC was unconcerned about Falls Creek, so no power was connected until 1960 when Tom Mitchell aired the matter in parliament. Tom was a keen skier. He applied to the Post Master General who was then responsible for telephones as well as mail. The PMG staff came up from Bright and installed an exchange in Diana Lodge. There were only about 15 lines to a post across the road uphill about 20 metres. It was from here that you could put a line from the building into a box where connections were possible. You had to buy a cable from the disposal store. It needed to have an alloy of copper and steel in the wire similar to what the army had used during the war. If the phone failed the owner would have to find the break in the wire, not an easy task in the heavy snow. Then came the telephone itself. Falls Creek was given old-fashioned sets with a hand wound magneto to ring the bell at the exchange. When the operator answered she could then plug a line into another phone line or the exchange in Bright. In the phone were two dry cell batteries that carried the spoken word to the other phone connected. Trunk lines were expensive then, so each trunk call was timed by the minute. The operator would disconnect you after a minute if you did not reply to her question "are you extending?". These telephones were donated by Julian Newton Brown. Julian's Lodge Arundel was known as Falls Creek 11.These telephones are significant because they illustrate the earliest form of technology available to connect Falls Creek Village to other areas.Telephones constructed of polished wood, brass bell, handles and cabling. Manual - Operating Manuals for Clyde Diesel Locomotives
This collection of Diesel Locomotive Manuals was published by the Clyde EngineeringA collection of 5 manuals for a range of Clyde Diesel Locomotives. The collection includes instructions for the Clyde G8B, G16C, G26C, 1800 HP Model A and the Clyde Mailiner Model 2. On the cover of each manual, the owner has written the letter for the name of class which the relevant locomotive was ascribed in Victoria. The Clyde Engineering Company Limited was registered on 30 September 1898 in New South Wales. It was one of the iconic Australian engineering firms whose history spanned just over a century and was one of the few locomotive and rolling stock builders in the world that transitioned from steam to diesel to electric traction. The company was formed by Walter Maplesden Noakes who purchased the works of Hudson Brothers Limited in the Sydney suburb of Granville, which had been established by in 1882. The manuals refer to the following locomotives:- Clyde Model G8B which operated in Victoria as the new T class locomotive. It was introduced in 1955 and was the most numerous class of diesel locomotive used in Victoria. This model continued in operation until 1968, although many were modified for continued service. Clyde Model G16C, later superseded by the G26C operated in Victoria as the X class locomotive between 1966 and 1976. Clyde Model 1800HP Model A became the S class locomotives in Victoria. Additional numbers were purchased in preparation for the opening of the standard gauge line between Melbourne and Albury, They entered service between 1957 and 1961. Clyde Mainline Model 2 became the B class in Victoria. The B class were the first mainline diesel-electric locomotives in Victoria entering service in June 1952. They were initially used on the main passenger and freight services, before moving out to other areas.
