Arthur Street, Eltham next to ANZ Bank The Hiroshima Day Banner was made by Jacky Talbot as part of the project. The women wanted to do something for Hiroshima Day and suggested that a workshop be set aside to make a banner. The artist was concerned about the remaining time scheduled for the project and spent several days "whipping" up the banner herself. For the artist this banner was to prove quite significant. The women hung it at the Community Notice Board on Hiroshima Day and were photographed by the local newspaper publicising the group and drawing wider community attention to the remembrance of the day. Although no new members joined the group from this activity, the artist felt that she was more fully accepted by the group afterwards. This banner has initiated a small group of women committed to peace. The artist has also continued to liaise and meet with the women as time permits. Future group plans include: making kimonos to wear when carrying the banner, participating in the Palm Sunday March, an observance of Hiroshima Day activity, which is yet to be decided, establishing contact with a sister-town in USA and USSR and supporting Eltham Council's stance as a Nuclear Free Zone. 3163 Pte W J Smith enlisted in to the AIF on 29 September 1915 and embarked from Fremantle on the Argylishire. On arrival Pte Smith was take on strength to Pioneer Training Battalion and was then transferred to 5 Pioneer Battalion. In the aftermath of World War 1, the Australian government aimed to raise 25 million pounds through the Second Peace Loan. Money raised was to be used for the repatriation and resettlement of former servicemen. Targets were set for money to be raised in each of the Australian states. This notice encouraged Victorians to help WWI returned servicemen through the purchase of peace bonds. It details the amount of interest a purchaser of a bond in the Second Peace Loan would receive after ten years. The 'Collaboration of Commonality and Difference' has its conceptual roots in teh notion that only when we accept and nurture both commonality and difference, can we, humankind, foster unity. With the acceptance and nurturing of commanality and difference, peoples of the world are afforded equal validity for a collaborative approach towards peaceful resolution and possible unity. Integral to the conceptual foundation of the work is the use of papers sourced from around the world. Paper is at once universal and individual, and in this instance is representative of humanking. The jigsaw design draws on the understanding that each piece is integral to the creation and resolution of the whole. Commanality is suggested through repetition, however, no two pieces are the samem emphasizinf the beautym strength and validity of difference. Established in 2004, generously supported by George Lucato, the Lucato Peace Prize was an annual acquisitive art award open to all enrolled Federation University Australia tertiary students and all senior secondary students enrolled at any City of Ballarat secondary school or college. Prizes were awarded to the applicants whose work best illustrates or expresses the idea that 'peaceful alternatives are always preferable to armed confrontations'. First prize of $2250.00 was awarded to Cassandra McArthur for her work, Commonality and Difference, 2014, and it was the last Lucato Peace Prize Awarded after the death of George Lucato in 2014. On the original register father's name is listed as William and the residence as Neil St, Ballarat.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover.
