Black and white image of Cheltenham in the early 20th Century depicts an almost idyllic life. This photo was taken by Percy Fairlam, who climbed a tall pine tree to achieve the aerial view. The tree was a well recognised feature of the Cheltenham skyline but was cut down some time before World War II.Cheltenham was established as a rural market gardening community. The development of the railway was crucial to the ongoing development of the area. For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. In 1995 a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. In these photos in 1998 President Tom Butcher laid a wreath at the Lone pine tree. There was a speech by the Legacy President and a wreath laying at the Lone Pine that had been planted in 1995. Legacy retains a tie with Caulfield racecourse as it was once an army camp and staging post of young men going overseas to war and now it is the site of a 'lone pine'. Taken over by Buninyong Cemetery Trust and eventually fell into serious disrepair. The artist’s comment on her work: “The Rowitta”, Flagstaff Hill. Warrnambool: "This boat was the venue for our daughter’s Wedding. The pastel work was undertaken after a beautiful day at Flagstaff Hill in 2012. I enjoyed working with the shadows and the foliage. Carmel Beavis” The popular steam ferry Rowitta is featured in this pastel picture on canvas by local artist Carmel Beavis. The iconic Norfolk pines stand tall against a blue sky, while colourful reflections shimmer in Flagstaff Hill’s harbour. The historic lifeboat “Warrnambool” is dwarfed by Rowitta’s size. Carmel’s daughter celebrated her wedding on board the Rowitta, which had been a very popular exhibit visitors for around forty years. This picture is one of several that were created by Carmel for her family and friends as a memento of the wedding and a way to keep the memory of Rowitta alive. Some of Carmel’s other works illustrate Flagstaff Hill’s 2017 publication “Tearooms Cookbook”. Some of Carmel’s paintings featured in the Tearooms Cookbook, produced around 2017 for fundraising for Flagstaff Hill. The Rowitta was a timber steam ferry built in Hobart in 1909 using planks of Huon and Karri wood. She was a favourite of sightseeing passengers along Tasmania’s Tamar and Derwent rivers for 30 years. Rowitta was also known as Tarkarri and Sorrentoand had worked as a coastal trading vessel between Devonport and Melbourne as well as along the southern coast of Australia. In 1974 Rowitta was purchased by Flagstaff Hilt to convert into a representation of the Speculant, a historic and locally significant sailing ship listed on the Victorian Heritage Database. (The Speculant was built in Scotland in 1895 and traded timber between the United Kingdom and Russia. Warrnambool’s P J McGennan & Co. then bought her to trade pine timber from New Zealand to Victorian ports and cargo to Melbourne. She was the largest ship ever registered with Warrnambool as her home port, playing a key role in the early 1900s in the Port of Warrnambool. In 1911, on her way to Melbourne, she was wrecked near Cape Otway. None of the nine crew lost their lives.) The promised funds for converting Rowitta into the Speculant were no longer available, so she was restored back to her original configuration. She represented the importance of coastal traders to transport, trade and communication in Australia times before rail and motor vehicles. Sadly, in 2015 the time had come to demolish the Rowitta due to her excessive deterioration and the high cost of on-going repairs. She had given over 100 years of service and pleasure to those who knew her. Early in 2019 Carmel gifted this picture to her friend Shirley Lindsay, who had been President of Wadas Artist Society. A few months later Shirley and her husband John (founding Director of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village) thought the picture would be appropriate to Flagstaff Hill and presented it with pleasure to the Friends of Flagstaff Hill group later that year.The Rowitta represents the importance of coastal traders to transport, trade and communication in Australia before rail and motor vehicles. The painting is also significant as a record of an exhibit at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village from is early beginnings. The Blackburn High School opened on 1st February 1956 with 128 Form 1 pupils and a staff of 8. The 20-acre site on the corner of Williams and Springvale road was surrounded by orchards and pine trees. The trees inspired the school motto: ' Ad licem crescimus' - 'We are growing towards the light'. The first headmaster was Mr V. Percy. Situated at 810 Main Road on the corner of John Street. The Church was surrounded by a picket fence and tall pine trees. The Church was built by George Stebbings in the 1850s and is an example of fine craftmanship. Formerly Wesleyan, Methodist then Uniting church; the foundations of the church building were constructed with stone from the walls of the first Eltham State Primary School (No. 209) building which collapsed in 1874 and were purchased by Robert David Taylor. The church is historically significant as an important link with the time when Eltham was a small, insular country settlement. Also for the historical evolution visible in the complex, with the modest 1880s church and larger red brick rear hall from the early 20th century as a reflection of population growth in the area (Criterion A). So perhaps they represented different gourds or classes. There is a wide range of ages too. Legacy ran many classes for the children in their care, this could be an outing or camp photo. There is one legatee in the photo. Partington's Flat Greensborough was created in the 1950s when Heidelberg Council bought 12 acres from the Partington family to make the park. Fruit trees can be seen in this photograph. Gary Partington (on 2/2/2017) was hazy on the precise locale of the photo. A planting of a pine tree at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on 17 April 1991. Legacy had a programme of donating trees grown from seeds from Lone Pine in Gallipoli. One photo shows 4 Gallipoli veterans standing by the newly planted pine tree. One shows President John Sullivan with the shovel. Also with representatives of John Allison / Monkhouse who provided the plaques for the tree. A different photo was used in the July 1991 issue of the Widows' Newsletter (later called The Answer) and explained two small Lone Pine trees were donated in appreciation of the care extended by the hospital to widows and dependents of veterans. Special guests included WW1 Gallipoli veterans who had revisited Gallipoli for its 75th Anniversary. White paper labels say: "Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' Lives on. Two lone pine trees, propagated from Gallipoli Lone Pines, were presented on behalf of Melbourne Legacy to the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital by the President, Legatee John Sullivan. The trees were presented in appreciation of the care extended by the Hospital to widows and dependants of veterans." "Commemorative plaques. Managing Director of John Allison / Monkhouse, Mr Clive Allison and Legatee Rob Allison presented bronze commemorative plaques which will be installed by the trees." "Gallipoli veterans were special guests at the presentation." The Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital has a proud history of caring for Veterans and War Widows. From the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. This may be part of that project (see the Lone Pine brochure at 00593) or subsequent propagation undertaken by Legacy. Melbourne Legacy’s Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation, presentation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' alive – its spirit living on today. Presentations are made to schools, ex-service organisations and interested bodies by Legacy Clubs in the hope that they will be cherished as a symbol of nationhood and of its just pride, devotion, courage, selflessness and sense of service to others. This name badge belonged to Rosemary Isaac, a member of the South Western Branch of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria. The badge, designed by long-time member Rita Williams, shows a Norfolk Island pine tree and a fence line. The South Western Branch of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria was formed in Warrnambool in November 1974. Its first major project was the making of a patchwork quilt for the Lighthouse Keepers cottage at Flagstaff Hill. This was presented to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at a meeting of the Embroiderers Guild attended by Historical Society members and representatives of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village in October 1976.
