This information is enclosed by a green border. non-fictionThis manual was issued by Victorian Railways in 1967 to explain all of the railway signals used throughout Victoria. It included a detailed outline of the signals used at every railway station, including small depots and sidings throughout Victoria. Illustrations of the different signal systems are included in the text. Every driver, fireman, guard, shunter, and every other employee designated by the Head of the Branch concerned, had to be supplied by his superior officer with a copy of this book. They were required to become thoroughly acquainted with the particulars which related to their duties. Cheltenham station was built in 1898 and serviced a primarily rural, market gardening community.The late 1870s saw the beginning of a massive program to construct railway lines throughout Victoria. One of these lines was from Caulfield to Frankston. A survey undertaken by J P Madden, an engineer employed by the railways, established the route, although this was later modified. At the time of the official opening of the line to Mordialloc no station buildings had been constructed despite the fact that tenders had been called in the Government Gazette of 26 May 1881 and subsequently in the Argus newspaper on 30 August 1881 for what became stations at Glenhuntly, Ormond, Bentleigh, Moorabbin, Highett, Cheltenham, Mentone and Mordialloc. However platforms and sidings were completed, ready to receive passengers. Standard Victorian Railways Brake Van (Guards Van) originally Z 448 built at Newport Workshops & body built by Grimmond & Party butty gang. Entered traffic on 23rd March 1914. Altered to ZL448 incorporating long travel draft gear, 28th November 1961. Off Register on 10th August 1982 & sold to Echuca City Council 3rd September 1982 This is an example of the most numerous type of brake van used by Victorian Railways over a very long period. Brake vans would not have been a common sight at the Wharf as the line to the Wharf was operated as a siding from Echuca Station, so a brake van was not required. It is possible that a shunter walked ahead of the train to and from the wharf. This vehicle is significant. However a large number survive in operable condition around Victoria. Once a major junction station between the Port Fairy Line and the branch to Penshurst and Hamilton, the track at Koroit has long been removed. The station has been preserved with heritage funding keeping it looking close to its working condition. The Ballarat-based firm, J Chatham and Co, serviced the Hotel Industry in Victoria, particularly Victoria’s Wimmera and Western Districts. Established by Jack { John} Chatham in 1956, The business was based at 7 Lydiard St South, Ballarat. As a regional hotel and motel broking specialist, Jack worked closely with other Ballarat businesses, including the Ballarat Brewery. On Jack's death in 1967, the business was taken over by his son, Philip, and renamed J Chatham Pty Ltd. The business continued to grow. Chatham House, the building the business operated from, and subsequently purchased and named, at 7 Lydiard St South, Ballarat still stands today. It was renamed by new owners in 2025 In the 1970's Philip opened a Melbourne branch in Dudley St, Nth Melbourne, The Melbourne branch, J Chatham and Daunt Pty Ltd, operated from 205 Victoria Parade, Fitzroy, a few blocks west of the Carlton United Brewery in the 1980s. In the late 1980s Philip's son, Andrew, joined the business, then called J Chatham, Daunt and Foley Pty Ltd. The business at this time operated from a terrace house [?Bouverie Street] Carlton near Grattan St. By 2005, the Daunt and Foley partnership had dissolved. In 2001 Philip predeceased his wife, Elizabeth Chatham (nee Holmes), a Director of the Company. His share of the business was inherited by Andrew. Elizabeth died in 2005. The business was sold in 2006.
