The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at the intersection of Smith St Gertrude St. Fitzroy. The workmen are excavating the former cable tram track The inbound cable tram track remains in position. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The track was opened to service in late June 1955. The second image is from a Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works plan (part) No. 1217 - Collingwood for the intersection, obtained for reference from the State Library of Victoria Collection of MMBW Plans. It shows the layout of the cables and the large sheave pit that the cable itself passed around. The trams were required to drop the cable from the grip prior to the entry to the curve and then coast around. The original line to the Essendon Aerodrome was constructed in 1943 to serve the airport and aircraft construction. It was funded by the Commonwealth Government. By 1976, patronage to the airport terminus in Vaughan St had dropped, the crossing of the highway to the Tullamarine Airport opened in 1970, was dangerous, and the highway needed to be widened. The new terminus was a short distance to the north between Mathews Ave and the Highway. This series of photographs show the operation of a tram service during the changeover. Trams ran from the Niddrie crossover near Keilor Road to a temporary terminus just short of the worksite, with cars running "bang" road or the wrong way for one trip along either line. This would have been controlled by an Inspector at the Niddrie end. The work was done over a 7-hour period, including changing the overhead over. Work would have been completed after the changeover period. .1 - W5 800 at “temporary” Essendon Airport terminus, Cnr Mathews Ave, Vaughan St. after running “bang” road or the wrong way to this point from the Niddrie or Keilor Road crossover. In 2000 major renovation works were carried out on the Sunbury Bendigo Rail line to accommodate new and larger carriages which were going to replace older trains. Major work at Sunbury included extending the platforms and replacing an old wooden pedestrian bridge with a larger one the included a series of ramps and a clock tower as well as a new pedestrian bridge.A non-digital coloured photograph of a series of ramps over railway tracks with a clock tower. Photos show the construction of King St overpass in Flinders St which was part of the project to construct a bridge over the Yarra River and provide a new southern outlet road between the city and eventually St Kilda Junction. The overpass construction was commenced in 1959 with tramway works first commencing. It was demolished in 2005. 1 - looking west at Market St. 2 - looking east from Spencer and Flinders St with the railway viaduct behind. 3 - Tram lines diverted onto the new overpass.
