Photo of Ballarat tram 27, southbound at Grey St. loop waiting to cross a City bound tram car. Has one male passenger waiting to board the inbound tram and a conductor (in SEC hat) waiting to board the tram and act as the conductor back into the City. Trams between Bell St. and Sebastopol during the day, were driver only. Conductors changed trams at Bell St. or wherever they crossed one another on the single track. Tram has destination of "Sebastopol", and advertisements for "Twin Lakes" and Whitehorse whiskey. Note long grass on the left hand side of the photo. Yields information about an event and its location, but the date of the event is unknown at this time.Sign - painted onto a SEC (very similar to a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Ballarat tram car with the words "Bell St Only" on the front and a paper advert on the rear for the Homes and Industries Fair, at the Drill Hall in Curtis St. Has another former painted advertising sign underneath. Date of use not known at the time of acquisition. To be researched. Bell St was a destination on the Ballarat Destination roll, so it may have been used on trams which were not fitted with full destination rolls and then recycled by the SEC for advertising means. Used for special tours by the AETA. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Manufactured by rolling the outer edges over a 4mm diameter steel rod. Has been painted over a an old sign "Direct to Trotting Showgrounds??? via Abbotsford St 3d". Second sign painted over a sign that had on one side "Via Elsternwick" and "Via Balaclava Road". Melbourne’s next-generation trams, G-class, have been designed to be easily repaired with improved visibility for drivers. A prototype has been completed and will be tested by a range of groups before testing on the network in 2025. Department of Transport and Planning’s head of rolling stock development, Ben Phyland, said this redesign was a response to the number of crashes in Melbourne and after consultation with tram drivers. In 2022, there were 960 collisions involving trams and cars, including 166 considered serious – an average of three crashes each day and a 60 per cent increase on 2021.
