HMAS Una was a Royal Australian Navy sloop that began its life as the German motor launch Komet. The ship and her 57 crew was captured by an infantry detachment of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force led by John Paton on 9 October 1914, with no loss of life. Komet was then sailed to Sydney as a prize. During the time in which the Una was in service under Australia, the sloop was used as a Patrol and General Purpose Vessel. The sloop was used to patrol the areas of New Guinea, New Britain, New Hebrides and Malayan waters. In December 1918, Una was sent to Darwin to protect Administrator John Gilruth, following the Darwin Rebellion. She arrived on Christmas Eve anchoring beneath the Government House cliffs until HMAS Encounter arrived in early 1919. After World War I, Una was decommissioned and taken to Port Phillip Bay, renamed Akuna and used as a pilot vessel. Charles Peel Trophy Donor: Peter Mitcheson Deed of Gift: No Peter was the nephew of Charles Peel who was one of the designers of the Jubilee class yacht first launched with Freydis BJ1 in 1935. Peter also at one time owned the Jubilee yachts Freydis BJ1 and Sylvia BJ2. Sylvia was destroyed in a collision with a ship at the mouth of the Yarra River. Edwards Cup Donor: Eli (Dick) Edwards Deed of Gift: Yes The trophy was originally donated to the Victorian Yacht Racing Association for a round-the-bay race of not less than 100 nautical miles, for yachts of a length of no longer than 30 feet and no less than 20 feet. The trophy is currently raced during a Club Marine race and is awarded to the winner of Division 1 on PHD handicap. The race is held on the same day as the Secours Trophy for Division 2 and the Allee Cup for Division 3. Eli Edwards was one of the early members of the Port Melbourne Yacht Club. Artemis Trophy (Sculpured Head) Donor: Marion French Deed of Gift: Yes Marion French donated the trophy in memory of her husband Bill French, who started sailing at SYC in cadet dinghies then at RBYC in 16 foot skiffs, then building several other yachts and finally in the Division 3 yacht Artemis until his death in 1988. The trophy is named after their yacht Artemis and awarded to the winner of a Division 3 race. In 2003 it was changed and awarded to the winner of the Winter Pursuit Series, then again changed and awarded to the winner of Saturday Pursuit Aggregate Series for October to May. A dorade is a type of ventilator that allows air to move in and out of a vessel's cabin or engine room but baffles or screens within the box it is fitted to prevent the rain and seawater from getting inside. A Dorade was first seen in use on the "Dorade", an ocean racing yacht designed by Olin James Stephenson II and built in 1929. Since then there have been modifications to the original design. The yacht, Dorade, could have been named after the Mediterranian dorade fish.An early piece of marine equipment from the 1930s that still is in use today on smaller vessels to improve below-deck ventilation.Dorade vent cowl; a cast brass ventilator. Part of our history on display These mementos were collected by Jock Sturrock’s wife Betty on their trips around the world to yacht clubs and sailing events. This collection has been lovingly preserved by Betty’s bother Doug Jones, his wife Elaine and their daughters Michelle and Claudia, who have donated it to Royal Brighton Yacht Club for members to enjoy.
