Yields information about one of the first two maximum traction bogie trams in Ballarat in October 1945 after it had been repainted for use in Ballarat by the SEC and a little photographed single truck tram No. 24. Lazarus Esq advising that he capably acted as Surveyor and Superintending Engineer for the construction of various sections of tramway track in Ballarat and thanking home for his work. Signed by E. James Beauchamp, Assistant Engineer and Manager. Accompanying the photocopy is a photocopy of a letter dated 17/3/1993 from Brian Robertson of 20 Main St Welshpool. Richard Bell was born in Dumfermline, Scotland in 1850, arriving in Victoria with his family as a child. He worked at the grocery store of W.L. Wilson, Skipton Street, Sebastopol for six years before opening his own grocery business on the corner of Drummond and South Streets, Ballarat. The business was successful and he retired 15 years later. He was elected to the Ballarat City Council in 1891, and in 1892 he started an auctioneering and sharebroking business in partnership with Mr Lambert. Organisations such as the Ballarat Woollen Company and the Ballarat Tramway Board benefited from Richard Bell's association with them, and he was the Director of many mining companies. He was a member of the Old Colonists' Association of Ballarat, the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute and the Commercial Club. Richard Bell was interest in erecting statues in Sturt Street to the memory of the poets Burns and Moore, and served on the relevant committee to that end. He was a long term truster of the Miners' Association, and took a very active part in the South Street Debating Society. In April 1874 Richard Bell married Jessie Scott, and the couple had two sons and seven daughters. Fare tokens - 1 1/2d - 21mm diameter - light brown celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference. Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "SOUTH ST. RUBICON ST." stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. Used a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC. A4 size sheet of paper, printed up as a BTPS (BTM) conductor's Revenue Journal for Adults fares as 60c, Children 30 and all day cards $1.20. Standard BTPS Revenue Journal format that was altered as necessary for the various fares. Known as form T2. Fares were 60c/30c from 1/11/1980 to 31/10/1985. Form would have been printed about Nov. 1980 and used to after the next fare rise as stocks were exhausted and the revised fares marked in by hand. Two copies held.
