Book, William Heinemann, The Wolf : how one German raider terrorised Australia and the southern oceans in the first world war, 2010
The true story of an epic voyage of destruction in World War One. July 1917: the First World War is about to enter its fourth horrendous year and ships are mysteriously disappearing off Australia and New Zealand, as a young Australian woman named Mary Cameron sails with her husband and daughter across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sydney. Less than a thousand miles from Sydney, a black-hulled freighter appears out of the vast blue emptiness, and Mary and her daughter rush to the deck to greet her. Suddenly, two hinged iron sections of the freighter's bulwarks drop down to reveal she is bristling with guns. She is in fact the German warship the Wolf, and the Cameron family are about to find themselves captive on one of the century's most extraordinary wartime sea voyages.Index, bib, ill, maps, p.384.non-fictionThe true story of an epic voyage of destruction in World War One. Bedspread, Bower, Archibald James, 1915-c.1920
Archibald James Bower enlisted in World War I in November 1915, and was killed in action in France in August 1916. Before he left Australia, he drew designs on linen for his mother, Harriet Bower nee Harper, to embroider a quilt - mainly flowers, butterflies and moths. Mrs Bower finished the quilt, which was then used for many years by her grandson, Archibald William Luxford. He went to sleep every night, knowing the designs were drawn by the uncle he had never known, after whom he had been named. This quilt has historic significance as a memorial to a soldier lost in World War I. It is important as a tangible reminder of loss in war, and an example of how memorials to those lost in war take many forms. It has aestetic significance as an example of needlework that is original in design, with an impressive range of different stitches used to execute the design. It has spiritual significance to the Luxford family and the Munro community (even though Archie Bower was from Sale and the quilt moved later to Munro), as the quilt that Arch Luxford, a prominent member of the community, often spoke about as one his most important possessions. He was born after the death of his uncle, and named in memory of him. He grew up sleeping under the quilt, and knowing the story of his loss in World War I.A bedspread made principally of three sections of white linen sewn together with panels of crochet, with a deep linen edging and crochet edging. There are moths, butterflies and flowers embroidered on all sections in white cotton, as a form of candlewicking.world war 1914-1918, craft, needlework -

Large residence on large elevated block for Frederick Christian Lange (1832-1888) and family in 1870. The architect Lloyd Tayler (1830-1900) designed it in an Italianate style. Over time adjoining allotments were purchased until the gardens covered nearly 15 acres. Lange was in partnership with Emil Thoneman trading under the name of Lange & Thoneman, merchants and general importers. Lange was also one of the local directors of the local Australasian directors for the Swiss Lloyd Marine Insurance Company. William Officer (1835-1913), pastoralist, bought the property from Lange in 1888 for 23,500 pounds. Following Officer's death the grounds were subdivided in 1914 and the house finally demolished in 1940. Noting the spelling difference, there is now a street named 'Hertford Street' very close to this location. black and white photograph copyAlma Road south west corner Lansdowne Road built for Federick C Lange (Merchant) Photo 1872 -

The bust of Major William Tackaberry was in the possession of the late Mr. Eric Streitbert, a nephew of major Tackaberry. Mr. Streitberg lived with his Aunt, Mrs. Linda Tackaberry and Uncle, William (Bill) Tuckaberry prior to and after WW2. Mr. Streitberg, who died in 1998 at the age of 86, was a member of the 2nd AIF during WW2. He spent 3 1/2 years as a POW on the Thai-Burma railway. Mr. Streitberg gave the bust to his relative, Mr. Stephen Anderson, the Grandson of his cousin the Late Pery Nott, also a nephew of William Tackaberry. It would be appreciated if this information could be kept with the bust of Major Tackaberry and the family association noted. The Australian Service Records of Major Tackaberry during WW1 are also attached. City of Ballarat
Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Open Monument by John Young, 2015
Open Monument is a contemporary artwork acknowledging the history of Chinese people in Ballarat. The Chinese diaspora was global and many Chinese people came to Ballarat and the Victorian Goldfields. The work details some of the personal Chinese family memories of Ballarat from the goldrush forward. The 33 marble laser-etched panels include found images and texts mounted on a modernist metal architectural feature holding back a grassed hill landscape.
