Mrs Winifred Fotheringham who helped launch the 1990 Legacy week as she was the oldest Legacy widow and had reached 101 years of age. She was taken to the new building at 101 Collins St to promote Legacy Week. She arrived in a Rolls Royce with Legatee Peter Boulter and was given flowers and chocolates. Photos show them on a tour of the building which at the time was going to be the tallest in Melbourne. Undated anecdotes by an anonymous author (by the handwriting it was Legatee Frank Doolan) about Melbourne Legacy changeover dinners at the Federal Hotel on the corner of Collins and King Streets. These were apparently convivial affairs and the writer shares his memories of three occasions. The first occasion was an impromptu and riotous performance by Legatees (organised by Pat Hanna) after the dinner of the First World War ballad 'Roses of Picardy'. The second occasion concerned a group of 'exuberant' Legatees walking down Collins Street after dinner who spotted Harry Lauder [1870-1950], the famous Scottish comedian, in a taxi which was held up at a street crossing'. They prevailed on him to speak at the Legacy luncheon the following Tuesday. Lauder's subsequent speech at the luncheon not only amused the listeners with his humour, but also reduced them to sadness with an account of how his son had been killed in action in France. The third story refers to 'a vacant hansom cab pulled up in Collins St as the diners were departing', which induced one Legatee to fulfil a lifelong ambition by persuading the cabby to let him drive the cab for the princely sum of one pound. Our Annual Badge Appeal raised $470,000. given the depressed economy and hard times within the community, Legacy was humbled by the generosity of the community and donations from Bequests totalled $193,966 and a further $111,000 was received from Philanthropic Trusts and Foundations. Records an extended Board Meeting which took place from 7.30-11.30 p.m on Thursday 16 July 1928 at the office of the Hon Sec in Collins Street , adjourning until 1.00-8.15 pm on Monday 20 August 1928 at the Alcazar Cafe, and then from 1.00-2.15 pm on Wednesday 22 August 1928, also at the Alcazar Cafe. No mention is made of any meals, but it can be assumed that such a long meeting included both food and drink. 56 items were discussed including membership, Junior Legatee activities and supervision, non-attendance by rostered Legatees and conference matters. Mention was made of the stewardship of the Club origin and history; unfortunately despite this promising start much has been lost over the years since. Blamey House was one of the residences used by Legacy as a home for Junior Legatees. The first few pages of this book explains the history and significance of the name Blamey House. Then it is like an honour roll and has pages to be inscribed with the name of each Junior Legatee that lives in the home plus their fathers name and service. There is a list of approximately 72 children in the book that lived in a Legacy home called Blamey House at some stage. The name Blamey House was transferred to three different homes run by Legacy until 1980. Blamey House was originally the name of a hostel set up in World War 2 for servicemen that needed short term accommodation and food. It was originally situated in Melbourne CBD on the corner of King and Collins Streets in the Robbs Building (since demolished). When the hostel was no longer required after the war, the trustees of Blamey House donated money - almost 20,000 pounds, to Legacy for a children and toddlers' home which was established in Balcombe Road Beaumaris. The condition of donation was that the name Blamey House be used and when the Balcombe Road property was sold in 1956 the name was transferred to Holmbush, another Legacy residence. Photographic portrait of Francis (Frank) Thomas Le Page. Frank is the oldest child of Nicholas and Rachel (nee Addy), who arrived in Melbourne in 1852 from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Nicholas was a tailor and Rachel was a dressmaker. They originally made their home in Prahran and set up a business but about two years later decided to take up market gardening. The Le Page family bought property in the Two Acre Village, Cheltenham. They had nine other children. At 14 years of age Frank was driving his father’s horse and dray to Melbourne with the vegetables they grew - standing backed in to the footpath in Little Collins Street, at the old Eastern Market. At 18 years of age, and the other members of the family growing up, Francis decided to seek work outside, and was employed as a gardener by Mr Budd, who conducted the Brighton Grammar School. It was whilst employed there that the late Sir Thomas Bent and he became friends, a friendship which lasted throughout their lives. Sir Thomas was then on the land also. Frank was an active member of social and sporting groups in the region. In 1876 Frank married Mary Geraghty and they made Cheltenham their home. He became a councillor for the then Shire of Moorabbin, a position he held for 25 years, and in 1902 was elected President of the Shire of Moorabbin. He was also a Justice of the Peace and occupied the bench at the Cheltenham Court. The next generation of Le Pages continued to be heavily involved in the civic life of the region with Frank and Mary's son Everest being elected mayor twice.Black and white image of Francis (Frank) Thomas Le Page.

Robin Kelly was born Robin Vandersluys in Mary Street, Kew. As a child, she sang in backyard concerts run with her brother, Leslie. The family moved to Deepdene in 1949 and Robin joined church and school choirs. Later she was to study classical singing with Stella Power, modern singing with Jack White, TV Presentation with Natalie Raine of Crawford Productions and acting/singing with Jessie Matthews. Following her victory in a talent quest at the Orama Ballroom, she was invited to join the Orama Big Band with singers Harry Cox and Arlene Forrest. She also sang with the Kerm Jones Jazz Band at Power House and with Frank Johnson's Jazz Band at Jazz Junction. Robin became resident band vocalist at the historic Federal Hotel in Collins Street with the Rudi Laquer Trio. She also sang at The Savoy Plaza with the George Cadman Trio. A year later she became resident vocalist at the Ress Oriental Hotel with the Lennie Holmes Trio. Later, Robin married pianist Peter Jones, singing under the name 'Robin Vanser' in clubs in Sydney and regional New South Wales. She was booked for a Vietnam War tour and also sang in Tahiti. Returning to Melbourne, her agent booked her to appear in shows in Tasmania including West Point Casino and Melbourne country venues. Another agent, John Bishop, booked her to do floor shows in Melbourne, including Xmas Seasons at the Hampton Hotel where she entertained audiences with her comedy and audience participation routines. In 1971, Robin Kelly retired to run her Robin Hood Antiques business in Canterbury, during which time she was married to tenor Glenn Kelly. Later she joined Sing Australia Camberwell Choir, performing as a soloist at their Melbourne Town Hall Concert.The Vandersluys-Kelly Collection of photographs, costumes and musical performance memorabilia was donated to the Kew Historical Society by Robin Denise Kelly in 2018. The collection is an important record of stage and recorded performances in Australia in the second half of the 20th century. This new nationally-focused and artistically significant collection augments and contextualises the local performing arts materials in our collection.
