Diploma for Gold Medal won by John Baker for best Lincoln Wool in show at the Earls Court Greater Britain Exhibition, London, 1899. John Baker owned a Lincoln sheep stud with 300 ewes and rams in Pomborneit, Victoria. The property was named Lakeside and the stud was Flock No. 5 in the first Flock Book of British Breed Sheep published in 1898. Lakeside rams and ewes were awarded Champion Ram and Ewe at the Sydney Show in 1892. By 1919 Lakeside was the largest registered Lincoln stud in Australia. The stud was dispersed in 1925.Brown timber frame with glass covering at front. Pale gold timber framed paper certificate inside. Certificate has a painting of a man being drawn by four horses beneath and arch with more people in the background and a tall ship. Oregon timber beams and Jarrah flooring were salvalged by George Coop and incorporated into extensions undertaken to 68 Mount Pleasant Road, Eltham. Timber collection/storage for the house extension took years and much was stored on the front lawn for nearly ten years. The renovations were undertaken c.1983. In 1965 Janet Hubbard worked on a children’s holiday farm called Ponyland in Osbourne Road, Christmas Hills. On this property was an old timber building with timber shingled roof, which had been a Cobb and Co staging post. Janet made a sketch of this building and also took a photo at the time. The property was owned at the time by a person named McLeod who later demolished the old building. Peter Jensen came to Martin's Creek (35 miles north of Orbost) in 1890 having been told that Martin's Creek would be on the railway line. He was a cooper who made the casks from silver wattles. He cleared the area for farming and then built an accommodation house, Danebo., which was well used by travellers to Bonang and Bendoc. . Gippsland was a relatively less developed part of Victoria in the nineteenth century. Danebo Hotel, Martin’s Creek, would have been an important stopping point for travellers to Bonang and Bendoc. Robert Ulmann who was born in Switzerland, came to the Western District in the 1970’s and was well known in the district for his paintings of wildlife. He also has some sculptural pieces around Warrnambool. He died suddenly in 1999. The P. S. Edwards was built in May 1875 by J. M. Webb, Echuca. Official number 73287, made of wood, with paddle wheels at the side. 78 gross tons, 27 nett tons. It was altered in 1916 , after cabin removed 48 gross ton. It had 7 different owners before being purchased by R. J. Evans, of Evans Bros. Saw Mill, Echuca, in 1919. The P. S. Edwards was sunk at Echuca in the spring of 1958 and then raised in January 1981 and then was being restored by Geoff Evans in 1985 (Parsons, Ronald. Ships of the Island Rivers. 3rd ed. 1996. p.67) The barge Ada was built in 1899 at Echuca by the Permewan Wright Company. The Ada hull was built of part wood and part steel, to protect the wool from becoming wet on the voyage down the Darling River to the Echuca Wharf. The Ada was used as a logging insider barge as well as a wool barge with the Pevensey on the Darling River.The P. S. Edwards has historical and social significance being a paddle boat built in Echuca. The P. S. Edwards was built in May 1875 by J. M. Webb, Echuca. The Ada was used as an inside looking barge as well as a wool barge with the P.S Pevensey on the Darling River. The barge Ada is still on display at the slipway at the Port of Echuca. The original ship was built in Glasgow in 1899 by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co for the Orient Line. It was the largest Orient Line passenger ship completed in the nineteenth century and was the third vessel of the Line to bear the famous “O” prefix, which was traditional through to the last ship, the mighty 'Oriana'. Her dimensions were 8,130 gross tons, length 490.6ft x beam 56.6ft (149.50 x 17.22m). She had one funnel, two masts, twin screw and a speed of 18½ knots. Her maiden voyage from London, via Suez, to Melbourne and Sydney commenced on 3rd February 1899. She was the largest British flag ship sailing to Australia at the time and continued to regularly sail between London, Melbourne and Sydney throughout her life. She last sailed as a passenger ship between Melbourne and Sydney on the 3rd November 1916. During World War I, she was converted to a troopship and was used to transport soldiers and assist with military operations. She was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-52, 40 nautical miles (74km) off the coast of Sardinia in the 12 May 1918. She was on her return journey from Alexandria to Marseilles with six other transports, carrying troops of the 52nd and 74th divisions when she was lost, resulting in one casualty. Her maiden voyage brought her to Melbourne in 1899. The ship carried the first Australian troops from Brisbane to WWI in September 1914.A large ship builder's model of the 'SS Omrah' an Orient Line one funnel passenger steamer of 1899.
