AERIAL SHOTS OF PARTS OF BENDIGO 1934 Catalogue No.10584 This document contains scans of a unique set of aerial photographs that were taken over the City of Bendigo on Friday 12th January 1934, at about midday. The photographs were commissioned by Bendigo Mines Limited during their exploration and mining program designed to revitalize the Bendigo Goldfield. The photographs were given to the Victorian Mines Department sometime in the 1950s. The photographs were taken at a relatively low level of about 4000 feet. This gives a very detailed picture of Bendigo as it was in the 1930s. The photos cover the City Centre and are mainly of the goldfields on the south side of the city; the extent of which covers approximately the four corners of Myers Flat, Maiden Gully, Mandurang and One Tree Hill. Streets, roads and places of interest have been identified as best as possible in December 2023. There are 44 maps, and each references the adjoining maps.Typed Notes with CD The CD is one of two and contains a set of 46 images: The folder named "High_Resolution_800dpi" contains the original digital files that were produced by scanning the photographic prints (About A3 size) at 800 dpi using a high quality, large pformat, roll scanner. These files may be too large for some computers. A second CD contains a direstory called "Low_Resolution_300dep" The images in the folder names "Low_Reolution_300dpr" have a lower resolution (300 dpi) and have been rotated 90 degrees clockwise so that the Northern margin of each image is a the top of the screen. Tool - Guy's tongue forceps used by Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan, 1930 (approximate)
During surgery under general anaesthetic, these forceps were used to pull the tongue forward to keep the patient's airways clear from obstruction. This tool was in general use from the 1930s onwards in teaching hospitals, and became a standard piece of equipment on all anaesthetic trolleys. In the majority of teaching hospitals, the blades of these forceps were smooth and wide to cause less trauma to the tongue. This particular style of tongue forceps is known as Guy's tongue forceps.Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan worked in the Victorian country town of Casterton as a general practitioner from 1919 until his death in 1977. He also practiced obstetrics. His son, Dr David More O'Sullivan donated his obstetric bag and its contents to the College in 1999. The bag and contents are a unique time capsule of the type of instruments and pharmaceuticals used in the inter-war period.Pair of metal forceps. Similar in appearance to a pair of scissors, and other surgical forceps, but with rounded teardrop shaped tips. There is also a notch clip for the handle to keep the forceps open. Trophy, I C I S A Deck Quoits 1936-7, 1937
This trophy is one of several from the 1930s that were awarded as part of inter-church competitions in Warrnambool. One of the chief sponsors of this inter-church competition was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer. He had his head office and factory in Warrnambool. The competitions were for indoor sports and this one has been awarded for deck quoits. The game of quoits consists of competitors throwing four or five rings or hoops onto a raised spike some metres away. The hoops are generally made of plaited rope and the game is said to have been started or popularized by sailors on board ship. In deck quoits the raised spike is usually replaced by concentric circles drawn on the playing surface. This game became very popular on ocean liner cruises from the 1920s on. The winner of this trophy, the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.) was a leading church activity group for men in the 1930s. A Congregational Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1864 in Liebig Street and transferred to Henna Street in 1940. This church was sold in 1979 to the Salvation Army when the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to become the Uniting Church. This trophy is of historical interest as it is one of the trophies dating from the 1930s and awarded by the now-defunct Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association in Warrnambool. This is a silver-coloured cup with an attached stem on a brown Bakelite stand. The cup has two ornamental handles. There is an inscription on one side of the cup. The silver is a little tarnished. ‘I.C.I.S.A. Deck Quoits won by C.M.I. 1936-7’inter church indoor sports association warrnambool, congregational church warrnambool -

Personal Effects, china shaving mug floral, c1950
Shaving cream is a cream applied to the face, or wherever else hair grows, to facilitate shaving. The use of cream achieves three effects: lubricates the cutting process; swells keratin; and desensitizes skin. Shaving creams commonly consist of an emulsion of oils, soaps or surfactants, and water. Until the early 20th century, bars or sticks of hard shaving soap were used. Later, tubes containing compounds of oils and soft soap were sold. Newer creams introduced in the 1940s neither produced lather nor required brushes, often referred to as brushless creams. Creams that are in tubes or tubs are commonly used with a shaving brush to produce a rich lather (most often used in wet shaving). A china mug with a floral decoration. Top has a perforated base across 2/3 of the diameter to hold shaving soap/ stick and a curved ledge to hold shaving razor. Base has a wide pouring spout where a shaving brush was placed into the water stored in the mug.maynard dennis, moorabbin, cheltenham, shaving equipment, shaving mugs, razors, safety razors -
Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Book - Reference S.E.C. History x4, Brown Power A Jubilee History of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, first published 1969
Although this book revolves around the supply of power(Electricity) from brown coal it does cover the period 1937 onwards when the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme was first mooted. This area was believed to be far away from aerial bombardment should the coastal power stations be attacked by air in World War II(1939 -1945). After the war, post 1945, the demand for a continual power supply, not affected by seasonal coastal flooding was together with a lower cost of hydro electricity power the major incentive for the Victoria Government of the day to proceed (in the 1940s) with The Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme. In 1946 Victorian government sought greater independence from the New South Wales black coal supplies. The significance of this book to the Kiewa Valley and its outlying regions is that it details why the development of an Alpine region was and now still is pocketed with a European flavour both in buildings and in town vegetation(trees and flowers). European (post World War II refugees) where attracted to these alpine areas not only for hard labouring positions but also for their technical skills and some street names offer a distinct European lineage rather than convict or of earlier English settler. The construction phase accommodation continued after completion of the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme to become popular venues for an increasing winter tourism industry. This book has a brown hard cover encapsulated by a cream sleeve with brown and black print. On the front of the sleeve is an embossed circular motif with centre piece S.E.C. emblem and around this the words "50 YEARS OF SERVICE" and below this" STATE ELECTRICITY COMMISSION OF VICTORIA". The book contains 313 double sided pages of black print and black and white photographs. On front of paper sleeve "Brown Power A Jubilee History of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Cecil Edwards". Drench Gun
The Kettle Drum Drenching Gun was invented and predominately used in the 1940s and 1950s. The Drench Gun was likely used to drench sheep with carbon tetrachloride for internal parasite control. These guns were widely used in Australia. There were problems with the design of the kettle Drum Drench Gun, however, which contributed to its demise. On hot days and/or if the sheep struggled while being drenched, some fluid would miss its intended target and go into the windpipe and onto the lungs of sheep, often with fatal results. At times nearly one-third of a flock could be found dead. Inexperienced operators, overdoses and weather were often blamed for the deaths when it was often the design of the Drench Gun itself. This photo was taken by Victor Cattoni of Ingham in Queensland when he was in Melbourne on his honeymoon in 1953. The donor (his son) knew of no connection between his father and the Conlon family. Victor and his wife, Julia, travelled to Melbourne on the 'Mananda', which had been converted into a hospital ship in 1940. Victor was a motor mechanic and business man in Ingham and later a sugarcane farmer at nearby Abergowrie. Conlon's bread factory was located at 410-412 Canterbury Road on the corner of The Avenue. The site was purchased in 1927 by Michael Conlon and the factory built in 1928/1929. The original Conlon bakery was at 108 Union Road. This became to retail shop until the 1940s with the family involved in both the bakery and the shop. The photograph depicts a view across the water at Lake Sambell. The image dates from approximately 1960. The present day park and reserve occupies the site of the former Rocky Mountain Mining Company, an open-cut sluice mine that began operations in the mid-Nineteenth Century and operated until the early 1900s, through the peak of Victoria’s Gold Rush. It was converted into a park and leisure area in the 1920s. Lake Sambell was formally opened to the public on Friday 5th October 1928 and was opened by the Victorian Government’s Minister of Lands, Mr Bailey, as part of initiatives to boost the economies and development of country towns. The lake was named after Mr L.H. Sambell, a shire engineer and secretary of the Forward Beechworth Committee who was involved in promoting the transformation of the mining site and promoting plantation forestry and tourism as alternative industries. £300 to begin the process was provided by Mr J. McConvill, a former resident of Beechworth, who is remembered in a street name adjacent to the lake. Residents of Beechworth have worked to raise funds to improve the Lake Sambell reserve several times, such as efforts in the 1930s and 1940s to raise the banks several feet to deepen the water for swimming purposes. Fundraising campaigns include the ‘Ugly Man’ competition conducted on behalf of the Wallace Park-Lake Sambell Development Scheme. The latter competition was run by the Fire Brigade Bend’s team as part of a larger competition called the ‘Mile of Pennies’; it was won by Mr Len Knight of Beechworth’s Commercial Hotel. The ‘Mile of Pennies’ was conducted at a Carnival held on New Year’s Eve, 1947. It was proposed by the Beechworth and District Progress Association. As well as improving swimming facilities, funds were raised to install a caravan park facility near the lake. Funds were also donated by commercial entities, such as £250 received from Zwar Bros. Photograph, St Moritz St Kilda - images collection #1, c1940s
The St. Moritz Ice Rink was a popular ice skating rink on The Esplanade, St. Kilda, Victoria. It operated between 1939–1981. As one of only two ice rinks in Melbourne in the 1940s and 1950s, it played a central role to the sport of ice hockey in Australia. Closed in 1982, it soon suffered a major fire and was then demolished, an event later seen as a major blow to the heritage of St Kilda. It was first built as the Wattle Path Palais de Danse in 1922, a very large dance hall, designed by architects Beaver & Purnell, The Wattle Path was the venue for the first all-Australian dance championship, and featured some of the best dance bands of Australia, as well as from America. Popular throughout the 1920s, it suffered due to the Great Depression, and closed in the early 1930s. From 1933-1936 the building became a film studio, Efftee Studios, for Frank W. Thring. In 1938, businessman Henry Hans "Harry" Kleiner announced that the Wattle Path would become an ice rink. He was sole proprietor until 1953, when he sold the business to J. Gordon and T. Molony, both champion skaters. Trade declined during the 1970s. The building was sold in 1980 to developers Hudson Conway and trucking magnate Lindsay Fox and was closed in early 1982. It was nominated to the Historic Buildings Preservation Council, but a majority of City of St Kilda councillors voted to oppose this action and uphold a demolition permit already issued. The building infamously suffered a fire later that year, leaving only the facades, which were demolished soon after. The site remained vacant until about 1991, when a mid-price hotel called the St Moritz was constructed. By 1993 it was simply called the Novotel St Kilda. The hotel closed in 2019 and was replaced by an apartment complex.black and white photographSt Moritz, St Kilda. Ice Skating. Cafst moritz, st kilda, the esplanade, ice skating -

Book, The Berrambool recipe book, 1915
This recipe book has been compiled by Mrs W. Moffatt to raise funds for the Wickliffe Hall Improvement Fund (1915). Wickliffe is a small town in Western Victoria situated on the banks of the Hopkins River on the Glenelg Highway 100 kilometres from Warrnambool. Jessie Moffatt (nee McLellan) married William Moffatt in 1885 and died in 1938. William Moffatt leased the Berrambool Estate near Wickliffe in 1893, bought it in 1903 and the Moffatts lived there until their deaths in the 1930s. This recipe book is of interest because of its social history, telling us what recipes were popular in the early 1900s and the use made of a recipe book to raise funds for local community funds. The book is also of interest because it is an example of the voluntary work done by a woman in the Western District in the early 20th century. The book is also of interest because the names of some of those who contributed the recipes are listed and many of them have local connections. The Warrnambool names listed include Williams and McCormick. This is a soft cover book of 149 pages. The cover is grey with dark blue lettering and some ornamental patterning. The book contains over 1400 recipes and many advertisements for businesses in Victoria at the back and front of the book. There are two loose sheets of paper with recipes. The binding has come apart and has been loosely mended with adhesive tape. The cover and some of the pages are a little tattered. jessie and william moffatt of berrambool, history of warrnambool -

Gong and Gavel, 1950s
This gong and gavel was presented to the Warrnambool Apex Club in 1953 when the club was re-formed following the disbanding of the club during World War Two. The Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club formed in the early 1930s and was a strong and important service club in Warrnambool for many years. It supported the Warrnambool-based Western Region Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre and Beyond Blue, an organization concentrating on men’s mental health. The Warrnambool Apex Club was disbanded in 2011. The Apex gong and gavel are of historical interest as they are a memento of the now-defunct Warrnambool Apex Club. For many years it was an important service club in Warrnambool. These are a gong on a stand and a gavel, used by the Apex Club of Warrnambool to call a meeting to order. The gong is circular and made of silver-coloured metal. It has a metal triangular-shaped emblem of Apex, featuring a rising sun in red and gold colouring and the word ‘Apex’ in gold lettering on a blue background. The gong is hollow at the back and has a wooden insert with a metal plaque attached with four metal screws. The gong is mounted on a rectangular wooden platform, in four layers, pyramidal-shaped. The platform has been lightly polished. The gavel is made of wood and has a round handle and a rectangular knob inserted into the handle. The knob has rounded edges. ‘Presented to Warrnambool Apex Club on the occasion of their re-charter 28.3.53 by the Camperdown Apex Club’. warrnambool apex club, history of warrnambool
