Sea Chests were traditionally used for centuries by sailors as a portable locker, box or suitcase to securely store and transport their personal belongings from one ship to another. This particular trunk is believed to date from the late 1800’s. It was existing in the house when Gerald Buckley took over from the Amess family in 1929. Edith took the chest when they left the island in the 1930s. It was used by the Jeffery family to store linen.
