Domestic object - Coffee Grinder, A. Kenrick & Sons, C 1880's
Many people used coffee grinders, spice grinders or mortar and pestle to grind the roasted coffee beans into a powder. It was made in England by Archibald Kenrick and Sons in about the 1890s. This firm had been established in 1791 in West Bromwich, Birmingham. A nineteenth century, cast iron coffee mill, with brass fittings, made by Kenricks of West Bromwich. This has a brass plaque to the front which has the makers name 'A. KENRICK & SONS PATENT COFFEE MILL' around the Royal coat of arms with a lion and unicorn above the words 'DIEU ET MON DROIT'. It dates from c.1880. It is in good condition for its age and is workable. It has a curved shaped winding handle which has a turned wooden knob at the end. There is a brass knob on the pull out drawer at the bottom to collect the grinds. There are side attachments on the cast iron base sides so the grinder may be screwed to a bench or table.This has a brass plaque to the front which has the makers name 'A. KENRICK & SONS PATENT COFFEE MILL' around the Royal coat of arms with a lion and unicorn above the words 'DIEU ET MON DROIT'. Ref: ebay sale same item description : 'Pill Maker dating from the late 1800s, used by chemists to mould ingredients into pills. It consists of two main parts, the board and the roller. The roller is made of wood with two handles. It fits over the sides of the board and has wheels to enable it to roll backwards and forwards. The underneath of the roller is fitted with a brass plate with grooves in it that match the board, enabling the mixture to be pressed into the grooves and formed into a tubular shape, ready to be weighed and cut into pills. The board is made of mahogany with brass sides and matching brass grooves'. Apothecary Pill Maker of brass and mahogany, in two parts, the board and the roller. These trousers are part of a Disruptive Pattern Combat Uniform issued by the Australian Airforce to Bernard Farley during service. This uniform type was used in base and field activities and was replaced in 2014 by the General Purpose Uniform as the uniform worn during general base duties and in non-warlike environments.This item has social significance, as an item of uniform worn by Warrnambool RSL community member and Secretary (2019), Bernard Farley during service with the Australian Airforce. The item is a representative example of previously standard issue Airforce uniform and is in excellent condition. As a set, the uniform has aesthetic significance in it’s design, incorporating the Disruptive Pattern style of camouflage which has its roots in the 1980s and continues to be adapted into uniform design by the Defence Force.Disruptive Pattern trousers in five colours of green and brown. Long pants with elasticised drawstring fastener at ankle and velcro adjustment fasteners at the waist. Pants take a straight leg style and bears several pockets: two thigh level pockets with zippered horizontal opening, two open hip pockets on the front, one open pocket on the reverse right hand side with blue plastic button fastener.
