St Kilda was declared a city on 2/12/1890 by the Governor of Victoria The Right Hon. John Adrian Louis Hope, the Earl of Hopetoun, GCMG (28/11/1889 - 12/07/1895). This event was commemorated 100 years later, on 2/12/1990, by the unveiling of a plaque by the current Governor Dr J. Davis McCaughey AC (18/02/1986 - 22/04/1992). Also in commemoration of the centenary, a conservatory in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens was opened that day by the Mayor, Cr. Melanie Eagle. Established in 1921 by Reginald Langdon Buller, the ‘Calliope Vineyard’ was named after the only surviving ship from the Great Hurricane at Samoa - 1889. A.B. The Wodonga line and train station opened in November 1873 when the section of the line from Wangaratta was completed. The expansion of the railways to the northeast of Victoria occurred after the Victorian Government took over the railways in 1867 and the trains serviced large towns such as Seymour, Wangaratta and Wodonga, as well as smaller towns along the way. The first section of the Wodonga to Tallangatta line opened in 1889 and was further extended in 1891. It was a vital community link until the passenger service closed in September 1961 The last regular goods train on the line ran on 21st April 1978. The north- east train line to Wodonga remained a significant factor in the development of Wodonga as a rural city in the 20th century. Local significance due to the importance of the railways to Wodonga as a means of transport, communication and impact on business and commerce. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. In 1850 a new Woolpack Inn was built for Mr. J.E. Crook, replacing the original slab building of 1845. Stables for twenty horses was also built in 1850, and in 1851, Crook established a coach service to the goldfields. After 1862, Crook pursued an interest in horse breeding, using the stables to accommodate his horses. The most notable of his horses was Saladin, which won the Australian Cup in 1872 after two dead heats with The Flying Dutchman. Memorial card given out to family and friends. Alexander Kirk Stewart died October 17, 1897 aged 42 years. Husband of Caroline Fairie (nee Kidd - born 1856 at sea), they marriedin 1885. Caroline died in 1901 at Diamond Creek aged 45 years. Memorial Cards were commonly handed out to those friends and family paying their respects at the loss of a loved one. C.H. Grove spent about 40 years in the area, information is mainly derived from his own recollections and "reliable sources". Charles Henry [Carl] Grove died on 17/4/1938 at Box Hill at the age of 88 and was buried in Orbost. Prior to coming to the Snowy River district, Carl worked as overseer on Buchan Station. In 1880, he selected land at Newmerella after first coming here in 1874 with early selector James A Robertson.He was one of the first selectors at Orbost - in 1880 he selected 320 acres at Newmerella, which he called „Ulinda‟ He married Annie Robertson in 1876. Carl was a farmer, hop and seed grower and nurseryman. He was an elected Councillor of the newly formed Tambo Shire in 1882, and then in 1892 to the Orbost Shire where he served for many years filling varioius public roles. In 1911, he shifted to Queensland, but later returned to Victoria and died at Box Hill. (Ref. R. F. Kennedy operated as a pharmacy in the late 19th and early 20th century in Timor Street Warrnambool. Mr Kennedy manufactured a large number of drugs and perfumes on a wholesale basis as well as very impressive retail business. Around the mid 1880’s they were shipping 5000 dozen bottles of Janos salts annually. Boracic acid was one such product which was commonly used product as an insecticide, herbicide and in cleaning products.A common item which was manufactured by one of the largest manufacturing chemists of the area. This is a 1923 booklet containing information on the Telephone Exchanges and the lists of subscribers in the areas of Geelong, Camperdown, Casterton, Hamilton, Mortlake, Portland and Warrnambool. Telephones were in use in Victoria as early as the 1870s with the first Telephone Exchange facility established in Melbourne in 1880. In 1890 the first Telephone Exchange in Warrnambool was established with 35 subscribers. In 1912 the first automatic Telephone Exchange for public use was established in Geelong. This was the second established in the British Empire. This booklet is of considerable importance as it lists all the telephone subscribers in the Warrnambool area in 1923. It is a great research tool as it gives not only the addresses of the subscribers but also in many instances their occupations and business names and in the areas around Warrnambool the names of the properties at that time. This is a soft-cover booklet of 104 pages. It has a dark grey cover with printed information on both sides. It was published in 1923. The pages are stapled together and contain lists of Telephone Exchanges, information on the distances from one Exchange to another in the area and the rates of charges for telephone trunk lines. It also has a list of subscribers in the Camperdown, Geelong, Hamilton and Warrnambool areas. The front cover has a small piece missing at the right hand side edge. These two flyers concern the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute Exhibition of Arts and Manufactures held in the Orderly Room over eight days in 1879-1880. The exhibition aimed to encourage local industries and to stimulate young people to manufacture and exhibit specimens of their skills in the various industries and arts. The admission was one shilling for adults and half price for children under 14. The exhibition was not very profitable with only seven pounds going into the Mechanics' Institute funds. Snowy River Shipping Company formed in 1880. They were soon shipping produce (mainly vegetables) from the area to Melbourne. The Snowy River Shipping Company was formed by Mr Henry James during the 1880s, with Captain McNeil as master. Captain McNeil was an always cheerful Marlo identity and local children had many times sailing with him on the river. These documents concern a legal case involving the Town Of Warrnambool, Elizabeth Granter and James Harris. The lawyer in the case was William Ardlie. The son of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool, William Ardlie was a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool from the late 1860s to the early 1930s and was active in community affairs. Elizabeth Granter, involved in the financial side of the legal case, was the wife of James Granter, another prominent Warrnambool identity of the 19th century. Granter was a quarryman and a road contractor and he and other members of his family seem to have been involved in other legal battles with James Harris, an employee of the Warrnambool Tramway, also involved in the financial aspects of the legal case. These three documents are of minor interest as an example of the legal cases undertaken by the well-known Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie. These are three 1888/1889 documents related to the legal practice of William Ardlie. Item One is a document listing the details of a court case involving Elizabeth Granter, James Harris and the Town Council of Warrnambool and is a sheet of paper with the details of the case written on both sides of the paper in black ink. The back page has a green stamp to the value of one penny. Item Two is a letter from Charles Hider, the bookseller, in regard to an item received by H.A.C. Macdonald, the Town Clerk of the Town of Warrnambool. The handwriting is in black ink. Item Three is a letter from the Warrnambool Tramway Department to Mr Ardlie regarding the request of James Harris for a small sum of money. This letter is a sheet of paper folded in two and written in black ink on one of the four sides. A Mathieson & Son History: In 1792 John Manners had set up a workshop making woodworking planes at 14 Saracens Lane Glasgow. He also had employed an apprentice Alexander Mathieson (1773-1851). But in the following year at Saracen's Lane, the 1841 census describes Alexander Mathieson as a master plane-maker now at 38 Saracen Lane with his son Thomas Adam working with him as a journeyman plane-maker. Presumably, Alexander must have taken over the premises and business of John Manners. Now that the business had Thomas Adam Mathieson working with his father it gradually grew and became more diversified, and it is recorded at the time by the Post-Office Glasgow Annual Directory that by 1847-1848 Alexander Mathieson was a “plane, brace, bit, auger & edge tool maker.” In 1849 the firm of James & William Stewart at 65 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh was taken over and Thomas was put in charge of the business, trading under the name Thomas A. Mathieson & Co. as plane and edge-tool makers. Thomas's company went on to acquire the Edinburgh edge-tool makers “Charles & Hugh McPherson” and took over their premises in Gilmore Street. In the Edinburgh directory of 1856/7, the business is recorded as being Alexander Mathieson & Son, plane and edge-tool makers at 48 Nicolson Street and Paul's Work, Gilmore Street Edinburgh. The 1851 census Alexander is recorded as working as a tool and plane-maker employing eight men. Later that year Alexander died and his son Thomas took over the business. Under the heading of an edge-tool maker in the 1852/3 Post-Office Glasgow Annual Directory the firm is now listed as Alexander Mathieson & Son, with further entries as "turning-lathe and vice manufacturers". By the early 1850s, the business had moved to 24 Saracen Lane. The directory for 1857/8 records that the firm had moved again only a few years later to East Campbell Street, off the Gallowgate area, and that through further diversification was also manufacturing coopers' and tinmen's tools. The ten-yearly censuses report the firm's growth in 1861 stating that Thomas was a tool manufacturer employing 95 men and 30 boys; in 1871 he had 200 men working for him and in 1881 300 men. By 1899 the firm had been incorporated as Alexander Mathieson & Sons Ltd, even though only Alexander's son Thomas appears ever to have joined the firm so the company was still in his fathers' name. In September 1868 Thomas Mathieson put a notice in the newspapers of the Sheffield & Rotherham Independent and the Sheffield Daily Telegraph stating that his firm had used the trade-mark of a crescent and star "for some time" and that "using or imitating the Mark would be proceeded against for infringement". The firm had acquired its interest in the crescent-and-star mark from the heirs of Charles Pickslay, the Sheffield cutler who had registered it with the Cutlers' Company in 1833 and had died in 1852. The year 1868 seems also to be the one in which the name Saracen Tool Works was first adopted; not only does it figure at the foot of the notice in the Sheffield press, it also makes its first appearance in the firm's entry in the Post-Office Glasgow Annual Directory in the 1868/9 edition. As Thomas Mathieson's business grew, so too did his involvement in local public life and philanthropy. One of the representatives of the third ward on the town council of Glasgow, he became a river bailie in 1868, a magistrate in 1870 and a preceptor of Hutcheson's Hospital in 1878. He had a passion for books and was an "ardent Ruskinian". He served on the committee handling the bequest for the setting up of the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. When he died at Coulter Maynes near Biggar in 1899, he left an estate worth £142,764.  Company's later years: Both Thomas's sons, James Harper and Thomas Ogilvie were involved in the continuing life of the firm. James followed in his father's footsteps in becoming a local public figure. He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the County of the City of Glasgow and was made a deacon of the Incorporation of the Hammermen of Glasgow in 1919. His brother Thomas Ogilvie was recorded as tool manufacturer and employer in the 1911 census. Thomas Ogilvie's son Thomas Alastair Sutherland Ogilvie Mathieson was born in 1908 took a rather different approach to engineering, however, by becoming a racing driver. In 1947 he wed the French film actress Mila Parély. The firm had won many awards at world fairs for their goods. At the Great Exhibition, London, 1851. Prize medal James Howarth & Sons History: James Howarth and Sons, of Broomspring Works, Bath-street Sheffield were among leading manufacturers of edge tools and joiners tools. The business was commenced in 1835, by James Howarth who was joined by his sons in 1863. Howarth manufacture light and heavy edge tools of all kinds, including a variety of joiners’ tools, hammers, skates, augers. The firm soon was extended and began exporting their products to the USA, Canada, Australia, China, and many other overseas destinations as well as to the home market. They were exhibitors at the London Exhibitions of 1851 and 1862, and Paris in 1855, receiving awards. Howarth was primarily operating from Sheffield. J Howarth & Sons produce goods of a very high class and were also engaged in the manufacture of steel, file, saw, and similar trades. Upon the death of James Howarth, the firm was managed by his four sons James, Samuel, Edwin, and John Howarth. This letter book was used by George Barber to produce letters to send to clients and to retain a copy of this correspondence. Barber was a prominent Warrnambool lawyer in the 19th century. English-born George Barber (1814-1897) came to Warrnambool from Port Fairy in 1853, making him one of the earliest lawyers in the town. In 1867 he formed a partnership with William Ardlie, and this partnership continued until Barber retired in1879. Barber was active in community affairs, being involved with such institutions as the Warrnambool Cricket Club, the Warrnambool Hospital, the Warrnambool Gas Company and the local Horticultural Society. This letter has a connection to one of Warrnambool's important early lawyers and will be useful to researchers if the handwriting can be read.This is a letter book of 750 pages with a hard grey-coloured cover and black taping on the spine. The front cover has a paper label with a handwritten title on the outside and a signature on the inside cover The cover is partly detached from the spine. The pages contain an alphabetical index at the front and copies of handwritten letters. There are many pages unused and there are three loose paper items seemingly not connected to the contents of the letter book. Ilma became Mrs J Bailey of Sturt Street West. From the date of this prize we can infer that Leila attended CLC from 1887 to 1890 and possibly longer. Vol II of II. The Brasseys visited Australia in winter 1887. Lady Annie Brassey mentions the Williamstown and Port Melbourne Sailors' Rest and Seamen's meeting. See p. 292 (18 June 1887)Lady Brassey and her husband Lord Thomas Brassey donated the proceeds of the Sunbeam visitation in Williamstown to the Sailor's Rest (£63). They also presented the Port Melbourne Sailors' Rest with a cheque of £50 as a contribution to the new building fund. Lady Brassey died of malaria at the end of their voyage and was buried at sea. Lord Brassey also donated £10 every year to the Seamen's Mission. Lady Brassey was remembered during the opening of the new building in Port Melbourne in February 1889. A portrait of her was dedicated in November the same year. The collection of photo albums is held in the Huntington Library in California. The lists describing each album are attached in the media.
