Wreath laying ceremony for Legacy widows at the Cenotaph at the Shrine of Remembrance. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The photos shows the widows gathered for a service within the Shrine of Remembrance with wreaths ready to be laid. Legatee David Kelly appears to be speaking in one photo. From the film numbers it appears to be 2003 when David Ford was president (see also 00615). The service appears to be in The Visitor Centre which was completed in 2003. A copy of speech given by President Bill Rogers to the 'At Home' function on 18 October 2007. The function was Melbourne Legacy's way of saying thank you to the many valued friends who do so much in assisting Legacy in many different ways throughout the year. Two generous cheques were presented to Legacy, by Simon Kinch of the Blackburn RSL and Jim Stevens and Ray Skals from the Watsonia RSL. Watsonia RSL had donated over $188,000 in the preceding 10 years. A typed copy of the speeches given on 4th November 1939 to farewell Stan Savige as he returned to the Army. It shows Sir John Gellibrand as patron of Legacy giving a toast to Stan Savige, as the Founder of Legacy. It includes Stan Savige's response which encompassed his views for the future of Legacy and the challenges coming during the war. Other copies in original documents are in the archive. Handwritten notes signed by Frank Doolan in response to an unnamed article on the building of the Shrine of Remembrance. A first page of notes is missing, indicated by the notes being numbered 5-14. Note No. 10 refers to the founding of Melbourne Legacy being erroneously attributed to Sir John Gellibrand. The pages are undated but refute in detail many of claims made by the 'architect author'. Doolan clearly feels passionate about the Shrine and Legacy's links to it and has very detailed knowledge about the building as he was a surveyor who worked on the building. Huntingdale Golf club was the site of many social events for Legatees and Widows clubs. The label states this was Huntingdale Ladies Day in 1993. The photo shows Legatee Graeme McDougall representing the President presenting the trophy to Mrs Kunkel and Mrs Foster. The trophy was called the Legacy Huntingdale Jubilee Trophy. The day raised $7,500 for Legacy. The photos were in an album of photos from 1992 and 1993. An article in the Answer says that the association with the Huntingdale golf club began in 1933 and over the years over $255,000 has been raised for Legacy. A menu card for a dinner given to farewell Legacy President Philip Potts as he left to be part of the Scottish delegation in March 1928. Legatee Potts was the current Legacy President and this promotion meant he had to step down and Legatee CH Peters took over the rest of the 1927-8 tenure. The text of menu has joking references to other Legatees which shows their comradeship and camaraderie. An album of significant events in March 1928 was compiled and presented to Legatee Potts by Legatee Frank Doolan. (see 02134). Minutes of the meeting held on 28th February 1975 which updated the information in Cat. No. 01693. Red Cross, which owned Stanhope and leased it to Melbourne Legacy, had been approached to consider Legacy's request to modify the residence. The numbers of children 16 years and under had averaged 35-40 with 26 currently in residence. The Committee now proposed that Harelands should be sold and Stanhope should become co-ed and modified to accommodate 40 children. Chairman Legatee Quayle undertook to ring other Committee members for their approval to pass these recommendations to the Junior Legacy Club. A Legacy widow, Beryl Billing, with two school girls from Siena College and a lot of loose letters. Six school girls came to Legacy house to meet the weekly gathering of the stamp ladies. They had chosen Legacy as a cause they wanted to help and decided to collect stamps, they donated over 5,000 stamps. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Beryl Billings was the co-ordinator of the stamp sorting for many years. For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. In 1995 a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. President Luscombe laid a wreath at the Lone pine tree. The article in the Answer says: "In spite of a somewhat 'windy' day for out "Back to Caulfield" race day, it was another success. Our President Legatee Brian (Lucky) Luscombe and Mr Peter Lawrence, Chairman of the VATC both made a speech and each laid a wreath at our 'Lone Pine' tree - a descendant of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine'. Our pine tree was getting blown around ferociously, but its roots are firm - just like Legacy."Legacy retains a tie with Caulfield racecourse as it was once an army camp and staging post of young men going overseas to war and now it is the site of a lone pine. A silk scarf souvenir from Egypt. It was embroidered with military symbols and a personal message from someone called William to Nellie. The connection with Legacy is not known. The founders of Legacy were all returned servicemen who returned from overseas service in World War One so would be familiar with similar sentimental souvenirs that were purchased in Egypt and sent home to loved ones.Founding Legatees would have been familiar with Egyptian souvenirs from World War 1.Purple and yellow fabric scarf with machine embroidered text, decorative flag and floral motifs and decorative brocade edging. A letter dated 18 January 1943 from builders to the Legacy Club submitting their tender for alterations to 1267 Burke Road for the sum of £408. The property mentioned at 1267 Burke Road was named Holmbush and was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. The President in 1988 was Alf Argent. His comments were very brief but included praise for the staff at Legacy House and for fellow legatees. "The Legacy movement is comradeship and assistance." The presidential year ran from March to the following February. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. It is primarily from the 1930s to 1990s. For many years Legacy was invited to bring junior legatees to Government House for for an enjoyable Legacy Christmas party. There were entertainers, carousels and often a train ride. And the joy of a Christmas present for each child. This photo shows a toddler riding a pony, which is being led by another boy in service uniform. Letter from the Junior Legacy Club dated 19 April 1943 recording a request to the Treasurer of Legacy for a cheque of £100 to be drawn in favour of Holmbush Committee. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. A Vale notice that was published in the Bulletin in 1966 on the death of Legatee Syd Birrell. He joined Legacy in 1924 and was very active contact work, welfare and probation work. It says: "It is doubtful that any other Legatee has performed more personal contact service in the homes of our families than has Syd. There are literally hundreds of widows and children in this community who have reason to be eternally grateful for the practical Legacy service he had rendered. He will be greatly missed in very many homes." Syd Birrell was President of Melbourne Legacy in 1949 and helped established at least 10 new Legacy groups in Gippsland and in northern Victoria. In World War One he had served with the 37th Infantry Battalion, winning an MC for bravery at the battle of Broodseinde in Belgium on 4 October 1917. In the Second World War he served as Captain in the VDC. A letter from the Secretary of the Victorian Premier's Department dated 23 February 1971 acknowledging the recommendation by President D.J. Simonson that Miss Ena (Enez) Domec-Carre be honoured. The suggestion bore fruit in the Queen's Birthday honours that year and Miss Domec-Carre was awarded the MBE. Miss Domec-Carre joined Melbourne Legacy in 1932 and became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes in Windsor, Elsternwick, Gardenvale and Geelong.
