These badges all marked W.R.C. appear to come from the Warrnambool Racing Club. The first race meeting in Warrnambool was held in 1848 at Jetty Flat. The first meeting at the present race course was held in 1858 with Warrnambool Racing Club established in 1873.The main event in Warrnambool horse racing today is the May Racing Carnival which features the Grand Annual Steeplechase. It has 33 jumps, the most hurdles of any race in the world over 5,500 metres. Victorias first quarantine station was established in Port Ormond on 24 April 1840 when the government immigrant ship "Glen Huntley" arrived in the Port Phillip District flying the yellow quarantine flag . The site is marked by a cairn and plaque that was unveiled in 1985. In 1990 a second plaque was affixed to the cairn to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the ship. David WILLIAMs David Williams established Toolangi Pottery in Toolangi, Victoria, in 1977. In 1980, he completed a BA in Fine Art from Phillip Institute of Technology (now part of RMIT University). He produces mainly crystalline glazed bowls, platters, vases, lampbases and other domestic ware. Belltower Pottery was set up by Rudolf Dybka in Kyabram, Victoria, in around 1977 with the help of John Stroomer. Stroomer later took over the pottery, employing as many as 23 workers and apprentices. After a fire in 1988 destroyed the building, Stroomer moved the pottery to the old Kyabram butter factory, where it operated until the late 1990s. This book, marked ‘W. College, 1890’, has been in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for a great number of years. It is presumed that the ‘W’ stands for Warrnambool and that the book belonged to a pupil or teacher from the Warrnambool College run by James Scott. This school commenced in 1887 in ‘Airlie’ in Henna Street and was at ‘Ashton’ (now part of Emmanuel College) from 1889 to 1899. The owner of the book, ‘N.’ (or W). H.’, has not been identified but it looks like a teacher’s handbook, rather than that of a pupil. This book is important, firstly for its antiquarian interest and as an example of a 19th century school text book and secondly for its association with James Scott’s Warrnambool College, a prominent private school in Warrnambool in the 19th century. This is a hard cover book of 328 pages, with some pages at the back listing other books published by Ward and Lock. The cover is dark red with gold and black lettering on the front cover and on the spine. The book has a Preface and an Introduction and there are several ornamental scrolls at the beginning and end of the text sections. The inscription is handwritten in pencil. ‘N (or W) H.’ ‘W. In January 1929, two parties were organised in the honour of the Wellers as they left Melbourne. Reverend Weller had been appointed assistant superintendent to the headquarters of the Missions to Seamen in London. They boarded the Osterley on the 22 January. Unfortunately Mrs Weller died in 1934. Many ladies on the photograph are yet to be identified. Established in 1953 the Ballarat Begonia Festival was inspired by Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival. From 1953 to1993 the Ballarat Begonia Festival hosts the Queen of Begonias competition. A judging panel would select one woman to become the annual Queen of Begonias. Her role was to promote the festival and appear in the parade.   The official opening of the first Begonia Festival on Saturday 8 March 1953 was marked by the symbolic arrival of a Cobb & Co coach, completing a trip from Ballarat to Melbourne and Geelong then return. Miss Kelsall was registered as a primary and music teacher in 1908. In 1919 she had a school at Wyclif Church in Norfolk Road. From 1924-1930 the school was in the hall, perhaps built for her, at 426 Canterbury Road, just west of Warrigal Road. The colour photo implies he did the run again in 1986. This document records the legal status of 'Junior Legacy, Melbourne' in 1952. Melbourne Legacy has had name changes over the years. In September 1952 Junior Legacy Melbourne was incorporated. Under the provisions of the Companies Act 1938, it was registered as a company with limited liability without the need for 'limited' in its' name (see page 1). By 1970 questions were being asked about the future viability of the three Melbourne Legacy residences - Harelands, Stanhope and Blamey House - and a committee was established to look into the issue. Chaired by A.V. Dore, the Forecasting Committee recommended that the Residences Committee be fully involved with the decision making, and a further sub-committee be established to pursue the matters raised in the report. When scrimshaw is mentioned, most people think of carving on sperm whale teeth only. But scrimshaw also includes engravings on skeletal whale bone–such as the jaw bone, called panbone–and ivory from other marine mammals such as walrus. Although scrimshaw is widely associated with nautical themes and designs of the 19th century whaling industry, vintage scrimshaw was also produced as tribal art in many cultures. Today, scrimshaw is recognized as a unique medium in which present-day artists have developed their own modern themes. Scrimshaw reproductions may take several forms. There are - New carvings on genuine ivory or bone with the deliberate intent to create an "antique” - New carvings on genuine ivory or bone sold as signed and dated contemporary art - Clearly marked synthetic museum reproductions and mass marketed - Unmarked synthetic replicas Painstakingly carved deliberate replicas are directed towards the scrimshaw collector and seldom appear in the general market. The biggest problems in the general antiques market are the mass produced synthetic reproduction pieces, such as this item, that can be mistaken for the genuine item. The scrimshaw is a modern reproduction of a typical scrimshaw scene and engraved onto a synthetic substance. "James Pinkerton, described by fellow settler Isaac Batey as ‘a fine old Scotish [sic] gentleman’, and his wife Margaret established ‘Chamois Ponds’ on Kororoit Creek in the Keilor district in 1840.44 After a fire in 1848, the Pinkerton family moved further west to a holding called Yaloke, on the Werribee River in the Melton district.45 Today, the Surbiton Park water treatment plant operates on part of the Yaloke run. The Pinkerton family is remembered in Melton in part due to the historic graves of the original settler, Margaret Pinkerton, and four of her grandchildren, which were marked by a memorial cairn in 1931. Changes to sewage flood zoning in the area in the 1990s necessitated that these burials be relocated. Members of the Melton & District Historical Society oversaw a project to relocate the Pinkerton graves and cairn 200 metres from their original site to their current resting place at Mount Cottrell. This relocation ceremony took place on 8 November 1992, with the participation of local school students and with Pinkerton descendants playing a central role. The Warrnambool Examiner was founded in 1851 by John Wilkinson and Richard Osburne. After a gap of a couple of years Richard Osburne resumed publication in October 1853 and continued until 1867. William Fairfax and Henry Laurie then leased the paper (1867 to 1872) before Richard Osburne again became the proprietor from October 1872 to April 1878 and from December 1879 to December 1880 when publication ceased. Richard Osburne was a pioneer settler in Warrnambool, arriving in 1847. He was prominent in community activities in the town and was a most important early historian, publishing his seminal work, ‘The History of Warrnambool’ in 1887, using the Warrnambool Examiner newspapers to assist with this history. Fairfax and Laurie were the proprietors when the papers described herein were printed. William Fairfax was a member of the Fairfax family that was, and still is, associated with the publication of many Australian newspapers. Henry Laurie later became well-known as a Melbourne University Philosophy Professor.These original newspapers are most important because they contain much information on Warrnambool’s early history and are a primary source of information for historians. These papers are also of importance because some parts of the original papers were not filmed and are not currently available on microfilm. These papers were in a Warrnambool City Council storage area and it is surmised that they have come from the old Warrnambool Museum that no longer exists. These are two sets bound together of original Warrnambool Examiner newspapers from 3rd January 1871 to 31st March 1871 and from 4th April 1871 to 27th June 1871. The individual copies are broadsheets of two pages printed on the four sides. The original cover of Set One has been replaced with plain grey cardboard and Set Two has a plain cardboard cover. The advertisements and public notices have been heavily marked by an editor with blue and red pencil. This book, a sequel to ‘The Swiss Family Robinson’ by Henry Frith, was a prize given to Frank Ward in 1901. His school, the Warrnambool Academy, was established in 1899 by Richard Lawson and William Oakley and was eventually situated at ‘Upton’ in Canterbury Road, Warrnambool. The Academy later incorporated the former Scott’s Warrnambool College and Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School. This private school closed in 1911. William Oakley later joined the Victorian Education Department and Richard Lawson had a distinguished academic career in teacher education in Melbourne and New Zealand. No details are available on Frank Ward. This is a hard cover book of 295 pages. The cover is dark blue with gold printing and ornamental gold borders on the front cover and spine. The book has an introductory chapter, 28 chapters of story and an Epilogue. In the back pages there are lists of other books published by Ward, Lock and Co. The book contains many black and white illustrations. There are two blue stamps of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society and on the first page a flyleaf from the Warrnambool Academy printed with gold print and borders and with handwriting in black ink. The bank began in Australia on 14th December 1835, opening in Sydney. The Acting Superintendent of the bank at that time was David Charters McArthur. He was Superintendent from 1867-to 1876. The Melbourne branch opened on 28th August 1838 in a two-roomed brick cottage on the north side of Little Collins Street, where two huge mastiff dogs were used at night to guard the bank. The government also provided an armed military sentinel. Due to the bank's rapid growth, a new building for the Melbourne branch was opened in 1840 at 75 Collins Street West. By 1879 the bank had been upgraded to a magnificent two-storey building on the corners of Collins and Queens Streets, with the entry on Collins Street. In 1951 the Bank of Australasia amalgamated with the Union Bank to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank, now known as the ANZ. Then in 1970, the ANZ merged with both the ES&A and the London Bank of Australia to form the ANZ Banking Group Limited. The ANZ Banking Group Ltd kindly donated a variety of historic items from the Bank of Australasia. BANK of AUSTRALASIA, WARRNAMBOOL – In 1854 Warrnambool had two banks, the Union Bank and the Bank of Australasia. Later, completely different bank businesses opened; in 1867 the National Bank of Australasia, then in 1875 the Colonial Bank of Australasia. The original Warrnambool branch of the Bank of Australasia was established in July 1854, and operated from a leased cottage on Merri Street, close to Liebig Street. The bank later bought a stone building previously erected by drapers Cramond & Dickson on the corner of Timor and Gibson Streets. Samuel Hannaford was a teller and then Manager at the Warrnambool branch from 1855 to 1856 and the Warrnambool Council chose that bank for its dealings during 1856-57. In 1859 Roberts & Co. was awarded the contract to build the new Bank of Australasia branch for the sum of £3,000. The land was on a sand hill on the northeast corner of Timor and Kepler Streets and had been bought in 1855 from investor James Cust. The new building opened on May 21, 1860. The bank continued to operate there until 1951 when it merged with the Union Bank to form the ANZ Bank, which continued operating from its Liebig Street building. Warrnambool City Council purchased the former Bank of Australasia building in 1971 and renovated it, then on 3rd December 1973 it was officially opened as the Art Gallery by Cr. Harold Stephenson and Gallery Director John Welsh. The Gallery transferred to the purpose-built building in Liebig Street in 1986 and the old bank building is now the Gallery club. Staff at the Bank of Australasia in Warrnambool included the following men but others were also involved: Samuel Hannaford, Teller then Manager from 1855-1856; W H Palmer, Manager from January 1857 until November 1869 when the Teller Basil Spence was promoted to Manager; H B Chomley, Manager from April 1873 and still there in 1886; A Butt, Manager in 1895-1904; J R McCleary Accountant and Acting Manager for 12 months, until 1900; A Kirk, Manager 1904; J Moore, staff until his transfer to Bendigo in December 1908; J S Bath was Manager until 1915; C C Cox, Manager until April 1923; Richard C Stanley, Manager 1923 to April 1928. The book has historical significance as it is connected to the Bank of Australasia which was established in Australia in 1835 by Royal Charter during the early Colonial period of Australia's history. The book was used as a reference to financial law by the Bank. The book is significant for its association with the Bank of Australasia in Warrnambool, the first bank in Warrnambool, established in 1854. The bank continued to operate until its merger in 1951 when it became the ANZ Bank, which is still in operation today. The Bank was an integral part of the establishment and growth of commerce in Colonial Warrnambool and throughout Australia.Book, dark brown, hard-covers with embossed borders front and back.
