Edward Augustus Atkyns was born in Wiltshire, England in 1840. His family emigrated to Australia in 1852. As a young man he was a keen cricketer and played at the first cricket ground in the district, located between Barkers Road and Hawthorn Grove, on the site of the future Barker railway station. Atkyns was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1861, initially working in his father’s practice. He sat as a local magistrate in both Kew and Hawthorn and acted as solicitor for several shire councils. Elected to the Hawthorn Borough Council in 1863 at the age of 23, he served in that municipality as mayor in 1866-67. The Jarrahmond State School No. 2745 near Orbost was one of the earliest in this district. It opened in 1886 at the same time as Orbost and shared a teacher (Campbell McKay who was shortly afterwards replaced by John Rowe who stayed in this position until 1908). The building was financed and built by local farmers on the Stapley property. After a large and damaging flood in the nearby Snowy River in 1893 , the building was shifted to a new location. In 1926, a new building was constructed by the Vic Ed Dept. where it remained until the school was closed in 1948 and children from the Jarrahmond area were then bused to Orbost. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. This is the 2nd edition. In the Gippsland Times newspaper on June 1 1936 there is a report of a meeting of the Greater Gippsland League at which the production of this book was mentioned as"a method of marking the Gippsland Centenary. TOURIST BOOK-LET. The work of -Messrs A. Gilchrist and A. B. Cooper in connection with the preparation of a tourist booklet was warmly commended and a minute of appreciation placed on record." This group seems to have been a group of Gippsland citizens interested in the progress of Gippsland and any government action in the area. This meeting was held at Maffra. This book was written by Ian Winchester, the grandson of James Winchester, early settler in Marlo, who worked with Alan Richardson. The book is dedicated to those who colonised the Snowy River. James Winchester was born in Geelong in 1856. He first sailed into Marlo, aged 15 and returned in the 1870's. he worked on the snagging punt on the Snowy River and also on the Paddle Steamer Curlip which towed the barges to collect the maize grown along the Snowy River.This book is a useful reference on the history of the Paddle Steamer Curlip.A thin, 22 pp, stapled paperback book, titled "P.S. Curlip & The Snowy River". It has a cream cover with a b/w photo of the Paddle Steamer Curlip in the centre. Print is black. It contains a history of the Curlip built by Samuel Richardson and is written in verse.
