The source of the ticket, NSW tramways is significant in that it was obtained by them as a sample.One penny or 1d paper ticket, ESCo, Ballarat Tramways, printed on fawn paper, No. D3339. Ticket has up and down directions, conditions of use, not issued on public holidays, special cars or railway picnic days. Thirty two page landscape booklet on semi gloss white paper with off white or cream cover and single supplementary white sheet tipped onto the inside of the front cover titled "See Melbourne's Beautiful Beaches and Garden Suburbs from a Special Bus". Saddle stapled, printed letterpress. Text printed in black and green ink. Cover green ink only. The book advertising MMTB's Special tourist bus, giving overall tour details on page 1, including fares, time of departures and reservations. Each tour has a map showing the route, details of the tour route with notes and photographs. Page 14 shows a maximum traction tram on the reserved track in Dandenong road and page 30, W2 488 outbound in Victoria Parade. Page 32 has an advertisement for the Round Trip by Tram 1/-. Yields information about a system of tram passes that were provided to the City of Ballarat Councillors in 1960 and has a strong association with the Councillors himself.Stamped brass badge or pass for free travel on the Ballarat Tramways for the year 1906. Stamped to give the words "Ballarat Electric Trams 1906" on the outer edge of the Badge and then stamped out to give the letters 'B E T" on the inside of the badge. On the top of the badge, a hole has been provided and a steel ring fitted. On the rear of the badge has the letters "CR. D. Hughes" stamped on the top of the badge and on the bottom the manufacturer's name "Stokes" in a reverse stamp. Indicates badge issued to Councillor D. Hughes for the year 1906. A similar badge was sold on ebay for $US 49.95 December 2007 - paperwork on file. Images on file - images i3 and i4. Was issued to Councillor C. R. Brokenshire. E-mail from Alan Bradley, re additional item 29/1/2012 - See Reg Item - The Electric Supply Co issued the passes to councillors of the City of Ballaarat for free tram rides. I don't know whether passes also went to Ballarat East and Sebastopol councillors as well. In Bill Scott's "Last tram at 11" on page 41 is a 1912 poem 'The councillor's farewell to his tramway pass". The ESCo tried a few economy measures at that time. Passes for councillors were withdrawn in 1912, as were free passes for employees "owing to our financial position". Employees were still allowed on free in uniform, but charged one-third of fare when off duty. In 1913 one-man operation came in." For another example see Reg item 5239. Set of three newspaper clippings pasted onto a single sheet of paper with two Punch holes on the left hand side. First clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, 2/4/1971 with photo of tram 28 after is collision the previous day with a semi-trailer at the intersection of Princes and Victoria Streets. Gives names of the vehicle drivers and cost of the damage. Photo is of the tram returning to the depot under its own power. Tram passenger named as Margaret Foley, tram driven by James Mason and the truck driven by Gerald Winter of Gordon. See Reg Item 672.1 for a print of the Courier Photograph. Second is from The Courier, Ballarat, 15/4/1971 of the Brown Hill Progress Association chartering a tram to create interest in the project for the retention of Ballarat's trams. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways fare system at the time of the one man trams, tokens which could be pre purchased by travellers and save time when boarding trams. See notes on file re these eg Reg Item 1801.Fare token- 2d - 21mm diameter - green celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference. On reverse in large font "2" and a small font "D" at top of the two - indicating token had a value of two pence. Extract from A. Bradley "The Golden City and its Tramways" about tokens and why. "The ESCo worked out its procedures from its own experience. A "pay as you enter" system was used on city-bound cars, and a "pay as you leave" system on outward-bound cars. On Sundays during busy periods this was reversed on the Gardens lines, but conductors were still required on this line to cope with the heavy summer holiday traffic. Trams 1 to 18 were altered by altering the end seating, placing gates on doorways and "pay as you enter" and "pay as you leave" signs. Once on board, passengers paid their coins into a farebox mounted behind the driver, which was fitted with glass windows and mirrors to enable the driver to see the coins slide into the box - a form of "moral check on passengers". Regular passengers could buy pink or green celluloid tokens at a discount price, to save the motorman having to issue tickets and give change."
