In WW2, this badge was issued to the nearest female relative, that has a service member abroad. Each star on the bar is for a serving member. Badge A293587, was issued to GREEN, C. Of 'Morneve'. Leopold street, Kangaroo point, Inverloch, VIC. Her relationship is noted as (S) sister of Denis and (E) of Annie. The two stars were for these Defence Force members:- V315242. BOURKE, Denis Patrick. At the top is a Royal Crown. In the center of the badge is a map of Australia, which is surrounded by a leaf pattern. Between the two rings of leaves, are the words "to the Women of Australia". Standard issue Royal Australian Air Force female officer's cap. The crown is light blue and the brim is dark blue. The brim, which is stiffened and has several rows of top stitching around it, is turned up at the back. The hat has a detachable band that attaches to the back of the crown with black Velcro. The inside crown is lined with silver coloured nylon cloth and has a black sweatband. A label on the inside of the hat gives manufacturer information. Sarah Jane Ellis was matron of the Ballarat Female Refuge, Scott's Parade, from 1906 until 31 May 1921. The Ballarat Female Refuge was established in Grant Street by a group of 26 women in 1867. Caselli designed the building in Scott's Parade and unmarried mothers were catered for in this residence from 1884 until 1941. The Alexandra Babies' Home was built adjacent to the Refuge and opened in 1909. The Babies' Home closed in 1973.A woman in white apron and cap. This beautiful leather bound book was awarded to Ballarat College student Adela Hannah Tunbridge. According to our records Adela was born 30 December 1870 and attended BC from 29 January 1884. This book was given to her as a First Prize for French at the end of her fifth form year. It is possible that Adela attended BC from 1884 - 1886. At some stage the book has been donated to Mentone Girls High School library by 'E. Payne' and given an accession number 2923. The book has been stamped and its spine strengthened for library service.
