In 2018 GHS members visited Turner's Bakery in Mernda for lunch and continued on to visit historic sites remaining in the Mernda area. This photograph shows the Bridge Inn Hotel Mernda, established 1891. A. J. Royce & Co. were general merchants in Orbost. Royce's was essentially a bakery in Nicholson Street on the site of the present supermarket. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex.This item is an example of the hand-written book-keeping of an early 20th century business in Orbost. Robert Greer was the Hall's Gap baker. He married Ida Warren and they had a daughter Rae. Robert & Ida inherited the bakery from Ida's father John Warren who established the business in 1929. Flour bags were used when purchasing flour from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century. In Melbourne, McAlpin's were one of the best known suppliers of self-raising flour. The business first began as a bakery in 1879 and was taken over in 1959. This is a good example of a flour bag from a well know Victorian supplier prominent in the early twentieth century.Calico flour bag for McAlpin’s self-raising flour. This photo was taken by Victor Cattoni of Ingham in Queensland when he was in Melbourne on his honeymoon in 1953. The donor (his son) knew of no connection between his father and the Conlon family. Victor and his wife, Julia, travelled to Melbourne on the 'Mananda', which had been converted into a hospital ship in 1940. Victor was a motor mechanic and business man in Ingham and later a sugarcane farmer at nearby Abergowrie. Conlon's bread factory was located at 410-412 Canterbury Road on the corner of The Avenue. The site was purchased in 1927 by Michael Conlon and the factory built in 1928/1929. The original Conlon bakery was at 108 Union Road. This became to retail shop until the 1940s with the family involved in both the bakery and the shop. The photo is representative of the era when home deliveries by horse and cart were made by local traders including the baker, green grocer and dairy man. It has been claimed that Vogt printed many of Bulmer's negatives without acknowledgement when he purchased his studio. These hames are part of the harness used by the family of Michael Conway who established a dairy farm of 35 acres in Wodonga in 1940. He and his wife Catherine nee Carroll settled there and raised 5 children. Before coming to Wodonga Michael carried on a bakery business at Urana. The hames were part of the harness attached to the horse which pulled his bakery cart. In Wodonga Michael Conway built a 2 bail dairy and milked up to 20 cows, separated the cream from the milk by hand and sold it to the local butter factory of Holdensen and Nielsen. In later years only whole milk was sold. The farm was on the outskirts of East Wodonga. Michael Conway died on 6th January 1945. The farm was later sold for residential and industrial development and includes Conway Court.This item has a clear connection to the family of Michael Conway of Wodonga, Victoria2 metal sections shaped to fit around the exterior of a horse collar. They are joined at the lower end by a chain and upper end by a leather strap. Approximately halfway up each section a hinged hook is located to which chains are hooked and attached to the cart. This ledger was used in the business of Twites Bakery which was in Timor Street Warrnambool and dates from the 1940s or 1950s. Max Cust, a breadcutter and relief driver at Twites, used this ledger to record the bread delivered in the South Warrnambool area. He lived in Banyan Street, Warrnambool and worked at Twites for a great number of years. This ledger is of interest as an example of the way bread deliveries were recorded in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century and tells us a little about many of the people living in South Warrnambool at that time.This is a ledger of 285 pages. It has a green thick card cover with tan leather spine and corners. The cover is scratched and stained and a couple of corners are a little tattered. This slush lamp was used in the Newmerella Bakehouse ( Sederlan's Bakery) before electricity was connected. In the days before battery powered torches many used a slush lamp to provide the light they needed to carry out their duties. It held a flammable liquid like paraffin. When the wick was lit the slush lamp provided sufficient lightSlush lamps were designed to be carried around but they could be dangerous because they have flame as a source of light. This is an example of a portable lighting device in common usage before the use of batteries.A cast iron slush lamp.
