St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool was opened in 1875 with the Minister in 1895 being the Rev. W. Gray Dixon. At this time the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavour was active and there was great enthusiasm for supporting missionary work in China and India. This newsletter is of considerable importance as it is an original document and describes the activities of the Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool in the 1890s and gives us some idea of the character of the church at the time. It includes information on Fred Newcombe who later died in India while working as a medical missionary and the names of many people who made their mark in our history. This is a white four-page printed newsletter - St. John’s Quarterly Record, No. 21, Warrnambool, April, 1895. The front page contains an image of St. John’s Church. The printed material includes Church Notes, Marriages, Funerals, Church Register and Disjunctions from Membership. Photographs taken of the first computer of Ballarat School of Mines / Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education Mount Helen Campus. This mainframe computer was purchased in 1969 for $116,000 and set up in the First Stage Engineering building (later F Building). It was the first operational teaching facility on the new campus. The initial computer centre staff were Arch McKinnon ad Manager and Judy Wilson as Key Punch Operator.. In 1972 Brian Dixon operated this computer for a night or two a week. He obtained an operators certificate as part of a Maths course at Ballarat College of Advanced Education, and lecturer Arch McKinnon offered Brian Dixon a night job.Four photographs relating to the ICL1911A computer. Possibly acquired by seafarer Mr Arthur Dixon who served in WW2 merchant vessels. The origin of the lighters appears to be Austria and could have been acquired either during or post his war service. This pocket size version of the New Testament published by Oxford University Press London has no specific publication date but would have been a very convenient size to carry at all times. Possibly produced at the turn of the 19th- 20th C. which parallels the ownership of Arthur Dixon while serving as a Mariner. A rare example of a small compact travel or pocket size Bible complete with the owner's inscriptions and annotations. Reflects the faith of this mariner still retained until his death in the mid 20th C. This personal item is also significant as part of the gift of several items and papers belonging to this seafarer including sample ID photographs.
