The first picnic was held in association with the Market Gardeners and Fruit Growers’ Association on April 3, 1884 at Lilydale. Groups of market gardeners travelled by train with their families from Cheltenham, and stations further north, to Lilydale at a cost of three shillings and six pence for adults and two shillings for children under 15 years. On arrival a band played music to accompany dancing ‘on the green’, and foot races were held as well as other sporting events. Globe Hotel, High St Charlton, established 1874 by John Walsh. This is the third building on the site. The first was destroyed by fire and rebuilt. It was then rebuilt as a two-storey hotel in 1940. It closed as a hotel in the early 1970's and became offices and flats. The Charlton Gentlemen's Club on the RH side was established in 1900. Set of 4 run number plates used at North Fitzroy Tram/bus and Footscray depot - plastic sheets off white or cream painted with the letter N of F (to indicate the depot) and a number to indicate the run number. Would have been used on buses as well. Letters in either red or black, some plates have a single hole in the top. Used to identify the depot and "run number" or timetable that the tram was running on, two in each tram, to enable monitoring by inspectors and crews. Question - were these used on Z class trams prior to the introduction the AVM system rather than metal run numbers.
