Bricks from "Willis Vale' home of the Partington family of Greensborough. Built in 1840, Willis Vale was owned by the Partington family from 1878 to 1947. It was a 2 storey house overlooking the Plenty River and set in 150 acres of farmland. The Partingtons moved out in 1947 and the house was vandalised shortly after. It was destroyed by fire in the 1960s.The bricks are a link to pioneer homes and farms in the area.Hand made clay bricks, light red in colour. All faces are flat.. One brick is chipped. From its beginnings in the late 1840's, Warrnambool progressed through the years from being a town and borough to finally being proclaimed a city in May 1918. The Governor of the day Mr Arthur Stanley officiated at the event on May 23rd, 1918. It was only the fourth such municipality to achieve this status at the time These medallions were a memento of this occasion.These small medals are significant as they are linked to an important event in the growth of Warrnambool. Three similar medallions in the form of a brooch with clasp, all in gilt metal and enamel. Round medallions 25mm in circumference, with blue enamel circular rim of 4mm around most of the outside, except for white enamel decal of 10mm at bottom. Pin clasp on reverse of the medallions. Two medallions donated from a separate source are identical with the others in markings; one with pin clip, one without pin clip. All medals identical, though manufacturers imprint " Bridgland & King " only appears on reverse of two. "City of Warrnambool" appears in gold block letters around blue enamel circumference of medal, "1918" appears in gold lettering in white enamel decal at the bottom. Warrnambool city crest is pressed in gold relief in the centre of the medal, consisting of a ship at sea, a sheaf of wheat, these quartered below the Victorian Coat of Arms. This oak wood sample is part of the wooden barque, the Grange, built in 1840. The wood sample was recovered from the shipwreck of the Grange in around 1968, 110 years after the Grange was wrecked (see below for further details on the Grange). It is part of the John Chance Collection. THE GRANGE, 1840-1858- The wooden barque ’Grange’ was a three-masted ship built in Scotland in 1840 for international and coastal trade. On March 22, 1858, the Grange set sail from Melbourne under Captain A. Alexander, carrying a cargo of ballast. The barque had left the Heads of Phillip Bay and was heading west along the Victorian coast towards Cape Otway. The ship struck Little Haley’s Reef at Apollo Bay due to a navigational error and was stuck on the rocks. The crew left the ship carrying whatever they could onto the beach. Eventually, the remains of the hull, sails and fittings were salvaged before the wreck of the Grange broke up about a month later. About 110 years later, in 1968, the wreck of the Grange was found by divers from the Underwater Explorers Club of Victoria. They were amazed to find a unique, six to nine pound carronade (type of small cannon) and a cannonball on the site. There have been no other similar carronades recorded. In that same year the anchor of the Grange was recovered by diver John Chance and Mal Brown. The wood sample is significant historically as an example of hardware used when building wooden ships in the early to mid-19th century. The sample is historically significant as an example of the work and trade of blacksmith. The sample is also has significant as it was recovered by John Chance, a diver from the wreck of the Grange in the 1968. Items that come from several wrecks along Victoria's coast have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. The sample is historically significant for its association with the 1840s wooden barque, the Grange. The Grange is an historical example of a Scottish built vessel used for international and coastal trader of both cargo and passengers in the mid-19th century. The Grange is an example of an early ship, designed with a wooden hull. It is significant as a ship still available to divers along the south coast of Victoria, for research and education purposes. The Grange is an example of a mid-19th century vessel that carried a weapon of defence onboard. Wood sample, oak wood fixed between plates and secured by a washer and bolt. There are five layers, each decreasing in size from base to the top. The bottom is a five-sided copper plate, above it is the oak sample that is crumbling and fragile, then a half-disc metal plate, then a square metal washer, then a round metal bolt head. Frederick George Hurst of the Hurst Family, for whom Hurstbridge was named. Frederick was born in 1840 in England and migrated to Australia in 1854. He came to Hurstbridge in 1857 and lived for some years at "Allwood". He married Catherine Heffernan in 1872 and had three daughters. He died in June 1927, age 86, the oldest surviving member of the family, and was buried locally. Edward Miller started his business in Meriden, Connecticut, in the 1840's making and selling camphene and burning fluid burners. By the 1860's, Edward Miller had become an aggressive competitior in the lamp business. Edward Miller died in 1909 at the age of 82. Henry Disston (1819-1878) was born in England and later moved to America. He has been noted in a biography as a "Pioneer Industrialist Inventor". In 1840 he began making and selling his own saws in Philadelphia, USA, growing to become the world's largest saw manufacturer. Tools made by Henry Disston and his company have the reputation of being the finest tools money can buy.The saw sharpening vice and its shifting spanner are significant for their connection with Henry Distton & Sons, renowned for high quality hand saws and associated tools. In 1855 Henry Disston cast a crucible saw sharpening steel, the first person to ever do so in America. The hand tools are also important for their association with the early building industry. Saw sharpening vice with accompanying saw tooth shifting spanner. The vice has a ball and socket clamp. The top of the vice has a saw clamp with wide jaws. The metal surface has remnants of black paint. Inscription is cast into the jaws of the vice. When Ebenezer Rust joined the partnership of Spencer and Browning in 1784, the firm of Spencer, Browning & Rust was created. All of the original partners of Spencer, Browning & Rust had died by 1819. The firm was succeeded by Spencer, Browning & Co. in 1840, following the 1838 death of Ebenezer Rust, Junior, son of the original partner.
