Book, C.H. Chomley, The True Story of the Kelly Gang of Bushrangers, 1920's
"The True Story of the Kelly Gang of Bushrangers, published in 1900, was a highly researched biography of the notorious 19th-century Victorian family of bushrangers. Chomley wrote the biography using court documents, police records and court evidence.] It is recognised as being one of the most accurate depictions of the story of Ned Kelly, particularly regarding the police involvement. In his discussion of The True Story of the Kelly Gang of Bushrangers, Paul Eggert writes: "He often expresses scepticism about the extant accounts of events and of motives, but his attitude is always one of confident understanding and conservative judgement". As the nephew of Arthur Wolfe Chomley, the Assistant prosecutor at Ned Kelly’s trial in 1880, and the nephew of Hussey Malone Chomley, a police officer during the Kelly years, Chomley had a unique insight into the case."--Back cover.A small faded red book titled: The True Story of the Kelly gang of Bushrangers by C.H. Diggers & Mining. The Diggings The Diggers. Slide: Forest Creek Diggings. (From Our Own Correspondent.) I arrived here on Sunday fornoon, and was much gratified at the sight that presented itself: every here and there was Divine Service being performed by ministers of almost every persuasion, whose ministrations were attended by devout and numerous congregations. The services were repeated in the evening and when the psalms and hymns were sung by the respective assemblages on the slopes of almost every hill, it really put one in mind of what e have been told of primitive times, and the days of our forefathers. Plaque - Plaque - 1951 Commemorative Plaque, 1951
1951 Commemorative Plaque (Centenary of Government in Victoria and Centenary of the Discovery of Gold) THE obverse side of this Medallion represents the three qualitities of democratic Government which makes the citizen's life worth living. Freedom, Justice and Equality. But the basic quality, through which Equality and Justice can be achieved or which results in Equality and Justice is FREEDOM. So the artist, in agreement with the sub-committee, selected a beautiful horse, gallantly bounding forward, his broken shackles still on his foreleg, carrying a woman representing Justice and a man representing Equality on its back. Without Freedom there is no Justice and Equality, but if there is Freedom, Justice and Equality are its natural results. The Stake on the reverse side represents strong democratic Government. Supported by it society grows and blossoms freely.Medal: OBVERSE: Depiction of a bucking horse with two nude riders. The first rider is a man wielding what appears to be a torch. The second rider is a blind folded woman wielding a sword. The horse has a broken shackle on the left foreleg. Information sheet in case. Case: Black leather, white satin lining and green velvet insert. Top bears gold coat of arm of Government of Victoria.Front: Equality and Justice through freedom. Back: CENTENARY OF THE GOVERNMENT OF VICTORIA 1851-1951 (edge) Presented to THE TOWN OF PORTLAND 1951 (engraved, centre)medal, commemorative, centenary, victoria -

Dunmore Journals (4), Mid 20th century
These four booklets contain typed copies of the diaries of Charles Hamilton MacKnight from 1841 to 1873. They mostly concern details of MacKnight’s life and work on Dunmore Station, a property at Broadwater, 20 kilometres from Macarthur and 54 kilometres from Warrnambool. Charles Hamilton MacKnight (1819-1873) came to Australia from Scotland in 1841 and established the property of Dunmore in 1842 with partners William Campbell and James Hamilton Irvine. MacKnight was a prominent breeder of sheep, cattle and horses and his diaries provide a valuable record of early settlement in the Western District of Victoria. The original diaries are in the Latrobe Library in Melbourne. These copies come from the Baulch family who owned part of the original Dunmore property for many years. As these booklets are copies of the original diaries they are of minor significance only but will be useful to local researchers..1 This is a foolscap-size booklet containing typed material. It has a buff-coloured paper cover with green binding containing three staples. It has a handwritten name and address, a handwritten set of dates and a typed label pasted on the front cover. The cover is somewhat creased and stained. .2 as .1 above .3 This is a foolscap-size booklet containing typed material. It has a buff-coloured paper cover with green binding containing three staples. Australian Historical Record Society papers, Incidents in the Life of Mrs Charlotte Francis Drew, interviewed by W. Coulthard, AHRS interviewing secretary
The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Mrs Charlotte Drew was a long term resident of Canadian, an area of Ballarat East. She first arrived in Australia in Adelaide. She and her husband George, who was a carpenter, arrived in Ballarat in 1851, and in these reminiscences she recalls a very lively life. -
