This glass has been issued to mark the end of the name of St. Ann’s College, Warrnambool in 1990 and the school’s amalgamation with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College in 1991. St. Ann’s School commenced in 1872 and was then known as St Mary’s Convent of Mercy School, Wyton. The latter name was the name of the ex-John Ardlie home in which the school was then situated. There were eight foundation Sisters of Mercy. In 1888 the name was changed to St Ann’s School and in 1991 it amalgamated with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College to form Emmanuel College. This glass is an interesting memento of the year that the name of St Ann’s College in Warrnambool ceased to exist. This is a clear drinking glass in the shape of a goblet with a round base and an elongated body with a round opening at the top. Fortuna Villa was owned from 1855 to 1871 by Christopher and Theodore Ballerstedt, Australia’s first mining magnates. In 1871 it was purchased by George Lansell (The Quartz King) being one of Australia’s most successful and adventurous nineteenth century gold mine owners and speculators. Lansell made numerous alterations and extensions to the building and it remained in the Lansell family until 1935. Dr Guscetti was born in Quinto, Switzerland on 24 June 1816. He died on 24 April 1871. Samuel Baird attended Ballarat College 1864 - 1872. He was the first student enrolled at the school. His father, Samuel Baird, was the first engineer for the city of Ballarat. According to his grandson Samuel Baird was indentured to a local chemist in Ballarat. He moved to Melbourne and took over the chemist business Hood and Co in Elizabeth Street Melbourne. This business remained in the family for a further generation. This certificate is accompanied by an earlier certificate indicating that Samuel also sat a matriculation examination in October 1871 and passed in four subjects (000132.1). The certificates are accompanied by signed receipts from the University of Melbourne for matriculation examinations at a totla of four times - Receipt no 503 30 October 1871 for 5 subjects (000132.2) Receipt no 495 6 August 1872 less than six subjects (000132.3) Receipt no 696 29 October 1872 for 8 subjects (000132.4) Receipt no 195 14 February 1873 for matriculation exam (000132.5) for purchased copies of matriculation certificates. This infers that Samuel Baird sat some portion of the matriculation certificate over four examinations. Record 000131 is related to these items being a reference from the Principal Robert Oliver McCoy for Samuel Baird written in 1873. The plaque was originally intended for the Murray Road Bridge. The Murray Road Bridge is of state historical and architectural significance. With the Newlands Street Bridge it is one of a pair of bluestone bridges constructed by prison labour in Coburg and is situated within the immediate vicinity of the Pentridge Prison. The bridge has one of five largest spans of stone bridges built in Australia, of which at least three survive. This 1871 coffin top Singer sewing machine was purchased third hand by a member of the Giles family in 1922. Its box-type lid was often used as a stool. It is now part of the Giles Collection. There are many 19th century items of furniture, linen and crockery donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Vera and Aurelin Giles. The items are associated with the Giles Family and are known as the “Giles Collection”. These items mostly came from the simple home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photos are in the parlour. They married in 1880. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill in 1858. He was a labourer on the construction of the Breakwater before leaving in 1895 to build bridges in N.S.W. for about seven years. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook. She attended Mailor’s Flat State School where she was also a student teacher before, as family legend has it, she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family of six, some of whom were born at Mailor’s Flat and later children at Wangoom, lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940. The Giles family collection has social significance at a local level, because it illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill when the Museum was established.
