Delta Company was reformed out of Support Company, of which recon platoon was a part ofShield shaped plaque made of varnished timber with a large badge affixed to its front The badge is a 5/6 colour patch being made up of a black rectangle on top of a red rectangle. Gold eyes and hands appear to be pearing through the bushes in the foregrond. This is the recon platoon logo. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material, it uses the phrase. 'Lest YOU Forget'. This advertisement with an image of a family, with a shadow behind them, may have been used to focus the public on the missing father who lost his life in service. The slogan was used again in 1990 with an image of the statue of Simpson and his donkey rather than a personality. Possibly to bring the focus back onto the service given to Australia by service men and women. It is possibly from 1989 as it was in a folder with marketing material from about that time. For several years in the 1990s a "personality of the year" was used to promote the Badge appeal. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). The report makes recomendations to the Board about matters that were discussed earlier in August 1984 (refer to item 00926). The report also notes that change is not always accepted - it takes courage to make change. It is essential to carefully explain the reasons why to all involved with Legacy activities. The change should be done in an orderly manner. The task force makes 23 recommendations to take Melbourne Legacy into the future. Freehand drawn graph, page 1, shows decine of active Legatees to number of widows from 1980 to 2000.Melbourne Legacy accepted that "it would be morally wrong to suddenly and with little warning drop a responsibility". Melbourne Legacy could also see the need for change to survive into the future, and that it was necesary that all those who would be affected by these changes should be made awareof them. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous, but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915, it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Lieutenant Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. Ernest Butcher served as No 56 8th Light Horse Regiment. He died of wounds sustained during the August 1915 offensive at Gallipoli. He is buried at Ari Burnu Cemetery Gallipoli. The death medallion was mounted on a wooden panel by his nephew Arthur Butcher and presented to 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles on Anzac Day 1977. The 8th Light Horse suffered crippling casualties in the August offensive at Gallipoli.
