These gloves belonged to Maria Frisch who had survived a number of concentration camps during the war and emigrated with her daughter Anne to Australia in 1948. Maria and her daughter Anne were Polish Jews. As a small child Anne had been smuggled out of the Krakow ghetto in 1942 and was taken in by a Polish woman. At the end of the war Anne was reunited with her mother in Krakow. In 1945 they travelled to Italy to be with Maria's sister Ida who had lived in Florence since the 1930s. When Maria and Anne emigrated to Melbourne, they lived in Martin Street, Brighton. Maria's husband, and Anne's father, perished in Mauthausen concentration camp. This ammunition bag was used by Harry Mitchell (son of Lindsay Mitchell) at the Bendigo Rifle Club in 1959, the bag was designed to hold 303 riffle bullets used in target shooting or could hold 7 cartridges for a shotgun. The Gladstone bag was very popular in the 1940/50 era, it fitted on the handlebars of a bicycle and it was used by footballers and sportsmen. A couple bottles of beer would fit comfortably in the bag and was.used to take beer home after the hotels closed at 6pm. These two articles were donated by Lindsay Mitchell to the Numurkah Historical Society. The Sunbeam Mixmaster belonged by Marjory Welch, Nana of Margaret Mitchell and would have been used in late 1930 and during 1940's. This flour bag came from the W.C. Thomas Flour Mill at Warracknabeal, Victoria. W.C. Thomas ran a number of flour mills throughout the Victorian wheat belt, with the Warracknabeal Mill operating from 1884 to 1964. This gear bag was issued to Sergent Harold Loraine Reed, who was born in 14 Aug 1889 in Portland, Victoria. Reed enlisted in the army in 1940 in Ballarat to serve in WWI, and was discharged from 8 Battalion in 1943. Gear bags such as this were standard issue to servicemen. These items were given to clients of the Mid City Motel (probably the one in Ballarat ). The Mid City Motel company was formed in 1963 by a syndicate with the motel in Raglan Parade, Warrnambool. It was later sold with the company liquidated in 1982. The expansion from Warrnambool to Ballarat occurred in 1970 with a building in Doveton Street North, Ballarat. Items such as the sewing kit and shower cap are still given out as promotional material in many motels today. These items are of little importance but are examples of the promotional activities of the motel/tourism scene 30 or so years ago.
