This was the second honour board created by Ballarat College to honour the top academic student of each year. The first award was given in 1868 four years after the school opened. Dux of College honour boards were on display in the Assembly Hall (Sturt Street building north wing). They are featured in 1918 photographs of the Assembly Hall. The three boards cover the following years: 1868 - 1895 (partially defaced), 1896 - 1921 (completely defaced) and 1922 - 1952 (complete). This new board replacing the originals were created prior to the centenary celebration in 1964 and hung in the Memorial Hall. At amalgamation (1974) and because the Senior students moved to the Mair Street campus) this board was co-opted to honour Middle School Dux. In 2012 the school undertook a major project and created three new boards. One board honours Ballarat College Dux (1868 - 1973) and School Captains (1914 - 1973); another board honours Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies' College Dux and Head Prefect (1919 - 1973). These boards resemble the 1950 re-creation. A third board was instituted in 2012 to honour Ballarat Clarendon College Dux and School Captains (1974 - ) This board emphasizes the value placed on academic excellence by the school from its earliest beginnings. That the boards have been maintained and consistently displayed in significant places of honour within the school only further emphasizes the historial and social significance of the award 'Dux of school'. Faded, sepia toned photograph, with stained cream-coloured cardboard mount and timber frame. The photograph was taken on 19 October 1877 and features the building then used by Ballarat College on the grounds of St Andrews Kirk, Sturt Street Ballarat. The foundation stone for this building was laid 12th September 1874. Grouped in front of the building are a line of 13 girls and two boys. Behind them stands a line of 26 older looking girls, and three men stand in the background. From 1877-1891 Ballarat College was co-educational, so it is likely that the girls in this photograph are the first years’ cohort of female students in 1877. The woman standing to the far right, a little apart from the line of girls could be the ‘Lady Principal’. Handwritten on the back of the photograph: ‘F.I. Schulze / Oct 19th 1877 / Ballarat College Sturt St. / In posse(s)ion (sic) of Florence Hewett - nee Schultze / died 1935 / Presented by her daughter / Irene Hewett' Florence Ida Schultze (PY1882) attended Ballarat College from 1877-1882. She married George Hewett (1878) who attended in 1877. George’s two sisters, Mary (PY1877) and Margaret (PY1881) also attended Ballarat College. It is highly likely that all four old collegians are in this photograph. Florence and George’s son, Reginald Schulze Hewett (PY1905) attended Ballarat College from 1902-1905. This book was awarded to May Adelaide Anstis in 1897 for first prize in Geography. May entered Clarendon Ladies' College in 1891. On the original register father's name is listed as William and the residence as Neil St, Ballarat.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in red calf with gilt and black illustrations on front cover and spine.
