Set of two Newspaper cuttings from The Herald, Melbourne, Wednesday 11 November 1970. 1st cutting from page 2 - item written by John Sorell in "On the Spot" about the Chairman of the Tramways Board Mr. Frank Kirby and the financial problems of the MMTB, government relations, costs of running the system. Includes a photo of Mr. Kirby. 2nd cutting, stapled to the first, about the decision of the Bolte Government to give the MMTB a grant for the first time this year. Driving Licenses will be doubled to assist payment and additional road maintenance works. Does not give details of financial arrangements. This photograph shows men cutting marble slabs at Buchan on James Cameron's property. The marble was used in the Shrine of REmembrance in Melbourne. The slabs in the photograph were about 8.5 metres long. The Shrine of Remembrance was created to meet the needs of a grieving community after the extensive loss of lives in the First World War (1914 –18). Sixteen dark Ionic columns were made of .Buchan marble In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and also Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. Marble quarrying has been a significant part of the history of Buchan in East Gippsland. sickle, late 19th -early 20th century
A hand sickle is typically used for harvesting grain crops or cutting succulent forage chiefly for feeding livestock (either freshly cut or dried as hay). this one was used for cutting back bracken fern.Sickles were not used as often on farms after the mechanisation of harvesting. They were still used for cutting awkward shaped small plots, for opening a path for the tractors and for clearing bracken. This item is an example of a tool used by the early settlers of the Orbost district.A wooden handled sickle used for fern cutting. Two Newspaper clippings pasted onto a single sheet of paper with two Punch holes on the left hand side. First clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, Thursday 19/8/1971 of two photos of a bogie trams in Sturt St. The first one with tram 40 derailed near the intersection of Sturt St with another bogie tram behind. Both trams showing destination of "Special". The photos are associated with a tram tour for Ballarat North Technical School. See Reg items 3765, 3766 for actual prints of the Courier photographs. Second cutting dated 23/7/71 discusses the replacement of the trams with buses, the various dates and trams being sought for preservation after closure, including the City of Ballaarat, the Borough of Sebastopol and the BTPS. Quotes Mr. Pellas, the manager of the Mid-Western Electricity Supply Branch. Newspaper cutting has been altered by cutting to fit the required space on the sheet, and possibly has left out a line in the last column.In red ink in on the first cutting, adjacent to the photo caption "19/8/71" and on second cutting, "23/7/71" in red ink on the right hand upper side of the cutting.
