This card together with a log book was a vital record of service for any seaman serving on a Merchant vessel that had been commandeered for War transport work and needed to be validated to ensure eligibility to be taken on as qualified member of the crew. G.W. Duncan appears to have specialised in engine room and mechanical maintenance. The website: austinmemories.com provides a list of extracts from the Austin Motor company archive and makes mention that in WW2 some 3,500 lifeboats were provided for ships. In the link above there is also reference to airborne lifeboats. It seems that the Austin 8HP so-called lifeboat motor was very often re-used by boating enthusiasts which would account for the publication or e-issue? of this manual in 1986. This menu appears to have been produced for the 1947 Maiden Voyage of the S.S. Athenic travelling between London and New Zealand via Curacao and Panama. This was possibly the first voyage on this vessel early in his career for engineer G. W. Duncan and therefore a souvenir. The commander of the vessel was D. Aitchinson. The SS Athenic was one of 2 vessels of the Shaw Savill Line. One became a whale factory ship and the second a passenger ship built and launched by Harland and Wolff in1944 and had maiden voyage 1947 between London and New Zealand. Several items were given by a seafarer, Mr Nicholas Garlick (1926-2009) into the care of Father Brady who retired from St Pauls Cathedral, Melbourne in 2018. Father Brady later donated the collection of; objects, documents and an extensive collection of cruise ship menus (1937-end of 20thC) to the Mission via the intermediary William Hastie, volunteer at the Mission for Seafarers.A5 single-fold, duck-egg blue card printed in red ink. In World War 2 residents of Victoria were concerned about enemy attack so a series of Spotters Huts were established along the coast. In Lorne the Spotters Hut was at Queenspark in the old recreation building. Many locals volunteered their time. The plaque was made by the Lorne Historical Society to honour these people who volunteered to join the Air Observers Corp. A rectangular thin Metal sheet , with black printing. This plaque was made in 1997 as a project of the Lorne Historical Society to pay tribute to the Spotters who worked in the spotters cabin at Queens Park Lorne during the Second World War. It listed all the names of the know Spotters, Win Allen, Nita Armistead, George Armitage, Olga Armitage, Grace Brown, George Crabbe, Monty Craig’s, Margaret Cunningham, Marj Gaylord, Marj Grant, Annie Stirling, Margie Fairbairn, Sheila McIntyre, Wilhemena Morris, Murray Morton, Nick Murnane, Eva Norton, Miss Pethabridge, Eileen Quick, Chas Read, Rev Ken Robert’s, Jack Stirling, Fred Harlock, Nellie Harlock, Cleve Herbert, Joyce Herbert, Hubert Howell, Bert Hughes, Helen Hughes, Enid Jarrett, Alice Kendrick, Marion Kendrick, Rowley Valentine, Mrs G Schram, Don Stewart , Hector Stribling, Cyril Barcoe, Rev Wilson, Kevin Dare, Cliff Green, Shirley Heathcote, Murray Milne. He sailed from Melbourne for Egypt in June, 1915, and had been at the front in France since April last. He also served ten months in the Naval Bridging Train before joining the artillery. He was born in Edmonton, England, and lived in Magill for about five years. The Senior Chaplain, Alfred Hurney Goldsmith, RANR, was appointed chaplain of the Naval Bridging Train in 1914. (Jottings 31, Midwinter 1914). Down 1853 - Died 1929) Information supplied by Bruce McDowell, Mary's Great Nephew).Greensborough Cemetery was created when land was given for the cemetery by Mr William Poulter, a local settler, about 1864.
