Artist's statement: I chose to make these afikoman pouches even though they may not be familiar to or used by all Jewish families. In these little pouches, a small piece of matzah would be placed in the pouch and then hidden in the house for the children to find during the Passover meal. On finding it, a gift is given. The story of Passover and Judaism in general have been kept alive over the centuries. I wanted to honour the passing down of the Torah through the generations, and, in particular, the role of children in its transmission. I have used the Australian desert as a metaphor for the great wilderness crossed by the People of Israel. A recent trip to Broken Hill and beyond inspired me to work with the subtle colours and textures of that landscape and I have incorporated into the work found objects, stones and beads collected there. After all Melbourne already has Mount Scopus College taking children from all over Melbourne and four or five other Jewish day schools in a system which is already one if not the best for a community of its size in the world. One of the most important answers to the question is that none of the existing primary schools, not even Mount Scopus, really serves the Jewish educational needs of primary school children in the northern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne. After Nazism came to Germany in 1933, Simon studied sculpture in Paris and Florence and then came to Australia. Completed in December 1910 as a steam passenger ship she was requisitioned as a troop transport for the Australian Expeditionary Force (AEF) in 1914. She was returned to the owner in 1920 only to be requisitioned again in 1940 by the Admiralty for use as a troopship. After the war, the Ascanius brought Jewish emigrants from Marseilles to Haifa and was sold to Italy and renamed San Giovannino for Cia de Nav. Florencia (A. Motosi), Genoa in 1949. The needle holder's overall shape is that of a teardrop, with a rounded handle section narrowing to serrated grip points at one end. Alex Dafner was interviewed about his involvement in the Kadimah from the 1970s through to the 2020s. Alex has been widely involved in Yiddish life in Melbourne. He served as a Kadimah board member (1970 – 2022) and President (1995-2015). He currently leads post-VCE Yiddish reading and conversation group. Dr Kloss is the son-in-law of Dr Fritz Duras (1896-1965), a doctor who moved to Australia from Germany in 1937. As his father was Jewish, Duras was forced to leave Germany, and Dr Duras came to Australia to take up a post as director of physical education at Melbourne University.Set of tissue forceps. Made of metal, the forceps resemble long tweezers, with a grip section and a small set of teeth at the end of each arm of the forceps. Thin, curved instrument with two oval shaped fittings attached to the sides of the instrument at the proximal end for grip. Metal test tube holding instrument. Instrument resembles a pair of scissors, but with bowed prongs to allow for the grasping of a test tube between the prongs.
