For 100 years Doncaster-Templestowe was a major fruit producing area. The industry had a profound effect on the landscape and vegetation. Although orcharding families came from a variety of backgrounds, German families were an important sub-group.A comprehensive history of fruit growing in the Doncaster-Templestowe area between 1850s and 1950s when orchards began to be subdivided for housing. It includes B&W photos and line drawings and maps. Small folded dance card which belonged to Jean Jones. Cards were for the City of Bendigo Mayoral Ball, June 4th 1964, by The Mayor & Mayoress Cr. A. S. & Mrs. Craig. Cards are white with blue printing. At the top is the City of Bendigo crest. Mayoral Ball is printed in gold. Each card has a blue cord attached and one has a small blue, red and white pencil attached to the cord. On the inside is the names of twenty dances and five of them have the name of a partner written beside them. A light brown document titled "Bendigo Teachers' College Graduation Ceremony 1953". Also on the front cover is a list of the staff at the college. On the inside cover is the Significance of the Graduation Ceremony and the Order of the Ceremony. Mr. F. M. Courtis gave the welcome to visitors and the Principal gave the College Charge to the Graduands. The 'Graduation Book' was presented to Mr. E. C. Krieger Inspector of Schools by Miss J. C. Burnett. Mr. C. L. Barker called the Roll of Graduands for 1953 and Mr. E. B. Pederick Chief Inspector of Primary Schools gave the Occasional Address. The following page has the list of graduands and on the back cover is "The Principal's Charge to the Graduands". Conductor and Soloist: Walter Susskind. Walter Susskind (with photo), During his two years as resident conductor of the Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Walter Susskind has left an indelible impression on music lovers by his conducting and his personality, both of which have endured him to concert audiences everywhere. Walter Susskind is now relinquishing his appointment of the permanent conductorship for the A.B.C. in Victoria to return overseas, and this final tour by the Victorian Symphony Orchestra for the 1955 season is also Mr Susskind's finale in Australia. An appealing future of these concerts to be presented over several provincial centres in turn will be the . . . Analytical Notes. Bendigo Concert Series Discontinued. The Australian Broadcasting Commission announces with regret that it has been found necessary to restrict the nimber of concerts presented in Bendigo each year pwing to the lack of sufficient support of these activities. Since 1947 the A.B.C. has presented a series of rour concerts each year in Bendigo. During these years artists who have appeared in the series include Ginette Neveu, Gyorgy Sandor, Erna Berger, the Robert Masters Quartet, Sydney MacEwan, Elena Nikolaidi, Michael Rabin, William kapell, Leon Goosens, Max Rosral, Sulvia Fisher, and many others of world standing. In addition, the Victorian Symphony Orchestra has given performances each year under such eminent conductor as Alceo Galliera, Juan Jose Castro and Walter Sisskind, while last year the seies included a visit by the Sydney Orchestra under Sir Eugene Goossens. While the A.B.C. in anxious to continue its policy of brining artists of world standing to provincial centres, includeing Bendigo, the quire considerable costs incurred. The Highesdt number of subscribers to a series in Bendigo was attained in 1951, when 350 season tickets were purchased. In all other uears, including 1955, the number has fallen below the required minimum, and ir has been decided not to proceed with plans for the 1956 season, although . . .
