From the War Widows' Guild of Australia website: 'the Guild badge would feature the kookaburra, an industrious and cheerful bird who mated for life, was fearless and aggressive in the defence of its young and the area of territory it regarded as its own. The bird also had a unique call, not a song but a laugh; a chortle of rollicking mirth (to bring the widows back to laughter). Also, the kookaburra is a typically and completely Australian symbol, one that could be worn proudly by every widow whatever her creed or ideals. The kookaburra was also the mascot of the 7th Division of the 2nd AIF, commanded by Mrs Vasey’s husband, Major-General Vasey. Mrs J M Vasey was the founder and president of the War Widows Guild. During the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After her husband Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild, established on 22 November 1945. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this apron, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. This collection of 22 photos was most likely taken in 1984. Mr Gordon Scholes AO was the Minister for Defence in the Hawke Government from 1983 to 1984. It’s evident in these photos he was taken on a tour through the production areas. Mr John Brumby AO at this time was the Federal Member for Bendigo. He later moved on to Victorian state politics, serving as Treasurer from 2000 to 2007 and Premier from 2007 to 2010. Key Army Survey Regiment personnel identified include COL Alex Laing, the Director of Survey from 1983 to 1988 and CO LTCOL Jorge Gruszka who led the unit from 1982 to 1985. The rank of the senior officer is not known, however would have been a Major-General or above, due to the presence of the aide-de-camp (female captain). This is a set of 22 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo circa 1984, by Mr Gordon Scholes AO, who was the Minister for Defence. Date is approximate; early Empire Day celebrations were held in May each year between 1906 and 1911 to commemorate Queen Victoria's birthday. Headmaster, George Bennett was later headmaster at Balwyn State School, which his son Gordon (later General Gordon Bennett) attended. Miss Amy Wise was a teacher at Surrey Hills State School for her entire career. (There is information in filing cabinet re Amy Wise). Note (undated) from John Reaburn states that an issue of SHNN claimed Major General Bennett was a pupil at SHPS. A letter dated 9 May 1963 from Legatee Desmond Breheny to Legatee Brian Armstrong to return material he borrowed about the life of Stan Savige. It probably included a copy of Legatee Armstrong's memorial oration he gave about Savige at the 1954 Legacy Conference in Canberra. The oration is a full account of Savige's life, his war service and his role in Legacy. Legatee Armstrong was a good friend of Savige. The moving address described General Savige's life and service career, and how he formed Legacy in 1923 at the suggestion of his former Commander, Major General Sir John Gellibrand. There are copies of the oration in the archive. This letter says 'Thank you for the use of your notes re Stan Savige which are returned enclosed. With these and Russell's book the task was much easier but I fear the results not as good as either! Photograph of seven male staff and three female staff standing with heads bowed with the likelihood of further men and women out of shot. The senior male at left is Tramways Board Chairman, Retired Major General Robert Risson (knighted in 1970). The location is likely a locker room in the M&MTB Head Office, Little Collins Street where Honour Rolls of staff who had died during war were fixed to walls above the lockers. A clock shows 11am, presumably on 11 November sometime in the 1960s, recalling the cesation of World War One. At this exact time each year across the tram network all tramcars were halted in the streets by order of the Board as a mark of respect.
