The initial partnership in a quartz crushing plant between Henry Koch, Simon Albert and Charles Wallin was dissolved in 1860 with Koch becoming the sole owner. In 1866 the crushing plant consisted of a 50 hp engine and 48 stamping heads capable of crushing 600 tons of quartz per week. By 1902 there were 72 stamps and this was by far the largest crushing plant in the area, serving many quartz mines. Henry Koch (1800-1889) was a German sailor who signed off when his ship reached Melbourne in 1851. Having heard of the gold discovery he proceeded to Bendigo where he was initially employed in puddling in the Myers Flat area. He was soon employed and then made partner in a quartz crushing plant that he became sole owner of in 1860. He was also landlord at the British and American Hotel and the Silver Mines Hotel. HE also started the Perseverance United gold claim. He married Anna Maria Theresia Heinz in 1857. In 1872 he sold the crushing plant for 75,000 pounds and took his family back to Germany. He resumed his trade as a ship builder although he maintained many Bendigo mining interests.Envelope containing a negative of Koch's Pioneer Crushing Battery. Originally called Graham's South Moon Mine was situated on the Garden Gully Reef, Eaglehawk. Initially owned by George William Graham (1827-1896) who was born in England. George moved out of mining in 1855 when he opened a hotel and store at Milkmaids flat and later he opened a business in Emu Creek. He retired from business in 1870 but then invested in various mining enterprises. HE married twice in 1852 and 1878.Horwood Collection - South Moon. The Garfield water wheel was the largest ever constructed in Victoria, standing 22 metres tall. Water was brought via a race from the Expedition Pass Reservoir and passed through the water wheel to power a 23 head stamping battery. This was all part of the Garfield Mining Company established in 1882. The wheel was in operation from 1887 to 1903 and was dismantled in 1904, leaving the stone supports still standing.Horwood Collection - Chewton Water Wheel. Carbon copy notes, with typed copies of same, which have been cut in half, listing Miners' Wages at the Deborah Mines, 1953. Wages are for a 5 day, 40 hour week and in present day currency. Miners received $27.20 or $35.25 if a Leader in a wet shaft. Braceman $25.80, Platman $25.80 or $27.05 if he worked in a wet shaft. A Mining Blacksmith $28.55, a Fireman, from $26.10 to $26.60, Winding Engine Driver $30.05 a week. Batteryman $25.10, battery Feeder $24.80. Engine Driver's wages varied from $27.10 to $28.90 if in charge of a dynamo and plant. The Basic Wage was then $23.20 a week. In 1895, employees worked a 6 day, 48 hour week and most men received less than $5 per week. The price of gold in 1949 was $30.98 compared with an average of $8.00 an ounce in 1895. Two copies of document : nineteen handwritten pages of notes on 'The Rich Victoria Hill and Its Historical Association' Signed by A Richardson and dated 30 - 8 - 1971. and a typed copy of same. Notes include: Introduction, Hotels, Mines, Mining History and descriptions of features where the signposts are. Mines mentioned in the text are: North Old Chum. Ballerstedt's first open cut, Lansell's Big 180. 20 head stamper, Lansell's Cleopatra Needle, Victoria Quartz Mine. Cleopatra's Needle was a square sectioned brick chimney with this four sided pyramidal chimney top with four vents to allow the smoke to escape whatever the direction of the wind. It was demolished in the 1950's as it had a bend in it and it was considered unsafe. Lansell had two other mines with similar chimneys, the '222' in Chum Street and his 'Sandhurst' or 'Needle' mine near the Bendigo, Eaglehawk boundary. The shaft depth was 1,912 ft. The original plant had small wooden poppet legs and a steam winch which were replaced, in 1935/36 by steel poppet legs obtained from the Virginia mine at Eaglehawk. Features and history of the plant are described including the winding engine, air compressor, boilers, and crushing battery. The dividends and gold production figures are given. The mine was formed in 1910 and ceased operations in 1936. Historical Records of Bendigo Mines' which outlines a project undertaken by Albert and the Historical Society to write a description of each Bendigo mine, showing location, plant, gold gained, depth of shaft etc. The objective was to publish this information in a book for 'educational and historical purpose'. The paper further describes a public meeting to outline the BHS proposal to 'preserve a gold mine with all equipment both surface and underground, a crushing battery, a windlass, a whip and a whim to be stored, as far as possible in correct position. For tourists, local residents and educational purposes this should illustrate what Bendigo workers in Bendigo foundries and Bendigo citizens generally, achieved in making this city a world-famous gold mining centre.
