Roger de Stoop was born in Flanders, Belgium in 1912 and died in Australia on 18th April 1999. The de Stoop textile factory was closed due to German occupation and when Roger de Stoop received an offer from Australian Dick Best to begin a a partnership in similar venture in Australia, he agreed, bringing looms and skilled workers with him. The company was the first to produce Belgian damask ticking in Australia. A miner from the Hustler's Hill mine struck a rich vein of gold and suggested George Lansell should buy all available share and enter into a partnership with him. The resulting fortune allowed the miner to build these substantial cottages of bluestone and named them Mt Pleasant House and View Hill House. They were later known as Bellyache Terrace. No 267 was eventually sold to G H Tatchell, solicitor. A 94 page cookbook compiled by Legacy in the 2018. In the acknowledgments special mention was made of the Bendigo, Canberra and Melbourne Legacy Clubs and to the legatees that contributed recipes. Some of the recipes also appear to come from widows in tribute to their husbands' favourite recipes. The publication was supported by Thales who had been in partnership with Legacy since 2008. Copies were sold for $20 each. The book is dedicated to the men, women and families of the Australian Defence Force. Limestone deposits in the Coimadai area 10 kilometers north of Ballarat were first worked in the 1850s. The area was quarried for limestone for many years by various people and companies. The surveyor's name who produced this plan is inscribed on the map and below this is the name P. L. Alkemade, who presumably paid for the map to be produced. In 1886 Petrus Alkemade in partnership with Matthew Egan established the Alkemade Hydraulic Lime and Cement Company. The man in the photograph is Diogenis Cominos from the village of Lefki on Ithaca. For a number decades he was in partnership with George Paxinos in a fruit shop in Degraves Street in Melbourne's CBD, where at the time there were a variety of small businesses such as a butcher's shop, florist shop and a couple of coffee shops. Degraves Street is now renown as part of Melbourne's laneway culture and for it European style cosy cafes and coffee shops. Pictured is Stathi Raftopoulos at Raft's Cafe which was located at 301 Swanston Street, Melbourne and was typical of many such businesses owned and operated by Greek migrants from Ithaca who had arrived in Australia before World War II. Stathi's family owned a business in Merbein in north-west Victoria before moving to Melbourne. Stathi eventually went into partnership and established the Cosmopolitan Picture Company which brought Greek films to Melbourne's Greek community during the 1960s through to the early 1980s. Ithacan Greeks who arrived in Australia during the first half of the twentieth century honed their entrepreneurial skills and found employment opportunities in various areas of the food service industry. Before the end of the Second World War many of the eating places in Melbourne, which included fish and grill rooms, tea rooms and milk bars, were owned by Ithacan Greeks. Pictorial guide to the artwork Our Eltham, a collection of 31 panels celebrating life in the Shire that were collaboratively created by artist Nerina Lascelles and ceramicist, Linda Detoma and commissioned by the Eltham Cemetery Trust. Our Eltham Artistic Recollections is a collection of panels that was commissioned by the Eltham Cemetery Trust as part of its vision to offer the community a fresh and unique relationship to the Cemetery. 31 panels were produced depicting historical images of Eltham and the nearby area with images of indigenous flowers and plants. A majority of the images were provided to the collaborating artists in digital form by Yarra Plenty Regional Library in partnership with Eltham District Historical Society who holds the significant Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph collection in partnership. EDHS and YPRL staff (Local and Family History Librarian) provided advice on which images to use and also provided assistance with the provision of information and editing services for this booklet, which is also available electronically. The collection of panels was collaboratively created by artist Nerica Lascelles and ceramicist Linda Detoma. The project was designed and constructed by Leigh Wykes with Australian stone and Ironwork by Neil Carter. W Baker and Co-produced many different types of pottery at their Fenton Potteries, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. The company was established in 1790 by Ralph Bourne and William Baker the company was working at capacity by the end of the century. By the late 1820's Bourne and Baker, in partnership with John Bourne, had acquired additional works opposite the first in 1833. With the deaths of John Bourne and William Baker, the partnership was dissolved, and then for a short time, the business was carried on by Ralph Bourne and William Baker junior and John Baker. By the early 1840s, William Baker was running it alone and was then using 'machinery for the potteries manufacturing operations in addition to the mill that was producing the raw clay. The business was subsequently carried on by William Baker and Company that were known for the making of printed, sponged, and pearl-white granite ware for export in the early 1880s at the Fenton works between Manor and Fountain Streets. The original works on the south side of City Road were by then an en-caustic tile works, apparently still in the hands of the Baker family. The pottery works flourished under William Baker’s management and by the middle of the nineteenth century with almost 500 employees was the biggest firm in Fenton. This photograph was taken circa 1981 - 1982 by Tourism Victoria. Orest “Ory” Frueauf was born in Kharkov, Russia in 1925 and moved to Germany with his family to escape persecution. He was conscripted to the German Army during the Second World War. He was a POW until 1948. He was recruited by a French construction company to work as and interpreter on a hydroelectricity project in Tasmania. Ory then moved to work on the Snowy Mountain Scheme including driving a truck to fill the wall of the Rocky Valley dam. In 1952 Ory was recruited by the Albury Ski Club as its lodge supervisor. That year he also entered into a business partnership with Cecil Dobson, running the general store “Whitehaven” and Post Office at Falls Creek. They extended their business by adding accommodation turning Whitehaven into one of the best commercial lodges at Falls Creek. Ory and Cecil dissolved their business partnership in 1963 and Ory went on to build a new lodge called “Snowhaven” at the site of the present day Frueauf Village, Falls Creek. The trail known as Ory's Trail is also named in his honour. It has a curved wooden handle with a flattened top and this is inserted into the top of the body of the tool. The middle section of the top of the tool had been gouged out and a metal blade inserted at an angle and this blade partly protrudes at the base to make a planing tool. 'Close Knit' was conceived based around providing the high density accommodation of the area with what many residents will never experience; the iconic ‘Aussie’ backyard, symbolised by washing on a Hills Hoist. This concept was transposed into several elements, including two large flying jumper sculptures. These stainless steel and fibreglass structures are supported on slanted poles, reminiscent of Hills Hoist arms. The jumpers appear to catch the breeze, and billow up, like washing on the clothesline on a sunny day, and cast lovely shadows across the paths and gardens. They are bright and joyful reminders of simple homespun joys. The handcraft theme is also featured in knitted concrete garden walls throughout the gardens. As if the wind is captured in the movement of the Hellenistic drapery, these panels echo the Lady of Justice, an earlier work of mine on the Victorian County Court. These feature walls bring a softness to the park and hark back to classic European garden design. There are 6 finial/balls of wool marking gateways and entrances to the park, as well as a couple randomly scattered throughout to be discovered. There is also a draped plinth at the Peel street entrance which has my signature. Again these elements echo traditional garden design and are a tactile and recognizable link to the hand knit themes of the park. Given the strong themes of domesticity and handcrafts, I have titled my work ‘Close Knit’, as it applies to the purpose of this public space as well as the works scattered throughout. Yarra City Council delivered Cambridge Street Reserve in partnership with the Victorian Government, who have supported the project with $1.3m funding. Yarra City Council has invested a further $731,130 towards the project. Urban Imitative Landscape Design worked with artist William Eicholtz at the beginning of the design process to consider the needs of a growing high-density population of the area. At double the size, with extensive park seating and a large lawn space which is shaded by native trees, Cambridge Street Reserve is now the largest park in Collingwood. Joyce Coffey (nee Hiddlestone) was the first woman to receive recognition as a designer in a major Australian manufacturing business, Kempthorne Lighting, where she was the chief designer in the post war period. These design drawings by Joyce Coffey were for the Well Glass lamp series of lights that were designed for indoor and outdoor use. Joyce Coffey worked in partnership with Selwyn Coffey on the designs. In 1956 lights from this series won a bronze award in the Industrial Design section of the Arts Festival exhibition of the Melbourne Olympic Games. Henry (Harry) William Tompkins was a renowned Melbourne architect, former City of Kew councillor and sometime Mayor of the municipality. He was president of the Melbourne Institute of Architects in 1914-15. In partnership with his brother, Frank Beauchamp Tompkins, he designed the Myer Stores in Bourke and Lonsdale Streets in 1933. Locally he was the architect of the Kew War Memorial (opened 1925). John Robert Hoskins was a Councillor with the City of Bendigo from1888 - 1902 and Mayor from 1901 - 1902. Hoskins' interests in the region included the mining company Hoskins & Co, which distinguished itself on the late Derwent Reef United Company's leased ground in 1868 by achieving a yield of over an ounce to the ton. In the late 1870s John R. Hoskins formed a estate agency in partnership with Frederick Illingworth. Born in England in 1832, Albert Bush was attracted to Australia by the lectures of Dr Laing. In 1852 he travelled to Queensland and later to Sydney before coming to Bendigo. His initial mining efforts were not successful so he gained employment as a clerk in a grocery store. In 1857 he opened his own grocery shop in partnership with Mr Ferris. The portrait photo is of John (Yiannis) Raftopoulos, father of Michael, Theodora and Dennis. John arrived in Australia in 1912 at the age of 13 together with his father Mihalis Raftopoulos. Mihalis had first come to Australia in 1895 and again in 1906; he finally returned to Ithaca in 1918. John however remained and eventually established his own business, Central Fruit Agency, in Melbourne's Victoria Market. This bottle is part of the John Chance Collection of shipwreck artefacts. The Dundas Pottery works were established in 1828 by William Johnstone in partnership with John Forsyth and John Mc Coll. Located where the Forth and Clyde Canal joined the Monkland Canal, North of Glasgow. Johnstone sold the pottery in 1835 to Robert Cochran and James Couper. Mc Coll was retained as manager until 1837when in 1839 Cochran & Couper sold the pottery and purchased the St Rollex Glass Works. George Duncan took over briefly but died in 1841, with the pottery possibly being run by his widow Helen and a potter named Alexander Paul. James Miller was the manager at the time and he bought the pottery in 1856, in partnership with John Moody.  Miller's long and careful stewardship of the pottery saw success from the export market which allowed him to purchase the North British pottery in 1867 until 1874 when it was sold. In 1875, Miller, in partnership with John Young, leased part of Caledonian Pottery, naming it Crown Pottery, however, it burned down in 1879. In the early 1880s, Young extended the pottery and named it Milton Pottery.  Miller’s son, James W., became a partner in Milton pottery in 1905.  James Miller Snr died in 1905 and the company continued as a limited liability company, being sold to the Borax Consolidation Ltd in 1929, but it was unsuccessful and Possil pottery purchased some of the company's equipment before it finally closed in 1932. From 1828 until the James Miller period of circa 1856, the pottery produced salt-glazed stoneware for the local industrial trade; mainly bottles and drain pipes. James Miller produced various bottles, whisky and acid jars, casks, butter crocks, jam jars and domestic wares in Bristol glaze. He streamlined the water filter manufacturing, which had become a speciality of the pottery, and a dedicated section of the pottery was created solely for their production, which was exported worldwide. A significant item of salt-glazed ceramic stoneware made by the Dundas potteries in Scotland who were renowned for making quality ironstone pottery. The bottle that was in common use throughout the British colonies and America for the containment of ale The bottle is also significant as it was recovered by John Chance, a diver, from a wreck on the coast of Victoria in the 1960s-70s. These labels were used in the business of E.B.Phillips, firstly when he as in partnership with Thomson in the late 1890s and later when he was the sole proprietor. Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924) was a furniture maker and seller with a business at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets. At the beginning of the 20th century it was the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside of Melbourne. Samples of his furniture making are still in use in various parts of Australia. Philips built his home, ‘Heatherlie’, diagonally opposite his business and this site today is occupied by ‘Heatherlie’ flats for the elderly.These labels are of interest as mementoes of the Warrnambool furniture shop and factory of E.B.Phillips, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool a hundred or more years ago. .1 A sheet of cream-coloured paper with cream printing on an orange background and a space for an address. The sheet has two ragged edges. .2 A circular label or sticker pasted on to an irregular-shaped sheet of brown paper (part of the original wrapping). The label has an image in brown and white tonings of a woman with an easel, some stylized decoration and blue and white printing.
