From an article in The Answer newsletter December 1996 these veteran cyclists were part of Veterans' Health week which is an awareness campaign from the Department of Veterans' Affairs. The cyclists were Jack Griffin (72) and Eric Doherty (76), who had recently completed their round Australia cycling expedition. The article says: "Reception at Legacy House for Veteran Cyclists There was a big media roll up at Legacy House Melbourne recently to cover the finish of a marathon bike ride around Australia by two very fit veterans. The article in The Answer in April 1997 announced that Daryl Somers would be the personality of the year for the Badge Appeal for the second year. He was photographed speaking at Legacy House and with people including Hazel McKean. Hazel was the wife of a VC winner. Also in the photos are Elaine Ward and Lynne Scott who's family had been used to promote Legacy in a 1994. Sir Edward "Weary" Dunlop appears to be pinning a badge on ex-footballer Ron Barassi. It was in the Melbourne City square, there is a Legacy Banner behind them. A tug of war held in Melbourne City Square to promote Legacy Week in 1992. Other photos at 01797 mentions it was a Legacy team against a media team. Ron Barassi can be seen at the end of the rope of the Legacy team. The judge appears to be Sir Weary Dunlop. Another photo shows a staff member (Susie Howard?) and radio personalities also competing - possibly the Fox FM crew that helped in other events. Ron Barassi was a Legacy Boy after losing his father and has helped promote Legacy many times at events. Weary Dunlop has also been active in promoting Legacy and participating in Legacy events. Photograph of Legatee Bob Cowper and another man by displays of paintings of aircraft. It was the launch of Legacy Week in 1990 which included an exhibition of Aviation Art at Legacy House. Paintings were by Frank Harding of Renmark, South Australia. The photo was used for a newspaper article published on 23 August 1990, mentions that Frank Harding had painted over 50 paintings of aircraft flown by Australians and published a book of the images. It was called 'They flew for the King'. Each painting had been extensively researched to capture a specific moment in the World War 2 combat career of various pilots, flight officers or bomb-aimers. His aim was to honour the fine efforts of these great individuals. Unfortunately the artist died a few weeks after the exhibition and launch of his book. Autumn 1995 issue of Gateway with a trammie (Roberto D'Andrea) leaning from 870 on the front cover. Contains an article "The Lucky City", written by Michael Davie about Melbourne and its city, in particular its trams. Has a photo of a City Circle tram (866) on page 22. Gateway published the Federal Airports Corporation as an inbound magazine for overseas travellers. In an email from Roberto 2/10/2014 - "G'day Warren, Yes indeed the Gateway Magazine with a younger Roberto at South Depot. Brings to mind that South Depot did the bulk of the tramways media through the 90s until closure. On the list of programs I have in the archive is Totally Wild (Channel 10), Monty the Weatherman did 4 crosses live (Channel 9), 7.30 Reports (ABC), we hosted 4 Corners around the network and a few other programs on Channel 7. Plenty of newspapers and radio. Handy with a close to city location the PTC sent the media to South for tram stories. I have the 6 Trammie banners from the Trammies Exhibition at the Immigration Museum where we worked together back in 2003. I've used them occasionally and may need them for a tram presentation in March next year....would they be handy as a part of a exhibit at Hawthorn? The Connies are still going strong....festivals and events, sometimes in schools and we've co-funded 2 tram festivals in Kolkata with the Calcutta Tramways in 2012 and 2013....environment central to the themes. Kevin keeps me posted on how things are going at Hawthorn. I met Doug Prosser at Hawthorn a few months ago and all looking good. These 35 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. This occasion is covered in more detail in page 143 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4.
