.1) The first medal on the left is the BEM. There are 9 clasps denoting overseas service and 3 clasps denoting Long Service. Francis William (Dinky) Dean enlisted in the 2nd AIF No VX93960 on 16.12.43 age 18 years. He went on to serve with the 2nd/2nd Pioneers in the islands ending up on Morotai at wars end. At the end of 1945 while still overseas 3 new Battalions were formed for service wth BCOF in Japan. They were the 65th, 66th and 67th Bn’s made up from 3 Aust Divisions 6th, 7th and 9th. Frank was one of the first to sign up in the 65th Bn with same Regt No. They moved to Japan in early 1946. While still in Japan in 1947 there was a period called the Interim Army while the 65th, 66th and 67th Bn’s were designated 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bn’s R.A.R, Aust Regular Army. His Regt No changed to 3742 and the 65th became the 1st Batt of the R.A.R. He then served with 1 RAR in Korea 7.4.52 to 28.2.53, 3.3.54 to 24.3.56. Malaya during the Emergency/ Confrontation Oct 1959 to Oct 1961. Vietnam 1.6.65 to 7.6. 66, 18.3.68 to 11.2.69. Malaya 1969-70. Frank was discharged from the Army on 19.12.1975 with the rank of Quarter Master Sergeant with a total of 32 years service. He was the longest serving member of 1 RAR, he had a final posting to RMC prior to discharge. BEM (British Empire Medal) For service in Korea. BCOF (British Commonwealth Occupation Force Japan) RAR ( Royal Australian Regiment) RMC (Royal Military College Duntroon) In 2004 Frank was the guest of honour at the new Coral Lines Lavarack Barracks Townsville, a street was named “Dean drive” after him. The HMAS BENDIGO (1) was a Bathurst type Minelayer/Corvette. It was made in Australia. Launched 1 MAR 1941 and paid off 27 SEP 1946. The ship had a normal complement of 85 hands. The ENSIGN is the standard pattern Royal Navy ensign in use at the time by The Royal Australian Navy. The Ensign has five written names including the Captain and has 85 autographs. All but two have been identified. Referring to the sailor's service cards, the signing probably occurred between OCT 1945 to FEB 1946. Post WW2, the Ensign was presented in gratitude to the City of Bendigo where it was on display in the Old Town Hall for decades. The City then gifted the Ensign to the Bendigo and District R.S.L. After some time the RSL lodged the Ensign with the Soldier's Memorial Institute Military museum for safe keeping.The main part is of a strong open weave white cotton. The flag is divided by a bright red cross vertically and horizontally. In the top left quadrant is the Union flag of the U.K. The left side has a strong canvas spine in which is mounted the sisal rope. The rope has a small length with loop at the top and a longer length with loop at the bottomThe bottom right quadrant, has these words stencilled on it..."In Appreciation from HMAS BENDIGO". Australia, like many countries involved in both the First and Second World Wars realised that they would need more funds to resource their campaigns, so war loan programs were developed. These programs encouraged the population to purchase government war bonds which would be repaid with interest at a later time while immediately assisting the war effort. Post WW2 the government continued to encourage citizens to save money in an attempt to curb inflation. Security loans formed part of this countries economic program from the 1940's onwards. Districts were allocated a quota for which they encouraged citizens to subscribe and pennants were awarded for the highest per capita payment amongst the town population. In 1946 Bendigo was the first country city in Australia to record a quota success for the Second Security Loan, raising £260,480 from 1953 subscribers. The uniform belonged to Wing Commander "Leonard Bacon", born 11 June 1906. He enlisted in the RAAF on 31 May 1926 No. 03305 with the rank AC.1. In 9 postings in Vic, QLD and WA he rose through 11 ranks to Sgt Maj Class 2 by 1940. He was commissioned as Flying Officer on 1.8.1940. He rose through the ranks to be Wing Commander on 1.7.1951. During WW2 from 1941 he was explosives Inspecting Officer at Northern Area 5 then to Explosive Inspecting Officer for the whole RAAF in the S/W Pacific. This role took him to some 21 places in the North from Townsville - Darwin to across the islands many several times. Leonard was awarded a "Mention in Despatches" on Morotai in 1945. Post WW2 in 1950 Leonard was appointed Chief Inspector of explosives in the RAAF, one of these roles was the supervision of the disposal of large quantities of War Stock. On 13.6.1958 he was recommended for an “OBE” which he received in the 1959 New Years Honors List. Leonard retired from the RAAF on 11.6.1960 after 34 years. Otto Schott, a chemist and glass engineer, had the vision of uniform production ie making glass items that would resemble one another. At the end of the eighteenth century, with most glass items still created by hand, the quality of output was still a guessing game. Schott was the first to render this an industrial certainty. 1884 Otto Schott, Ernst Abbe and Carl and Roderich Zeiss found the Schott & Associates Glass Technology Laboratory in Jena, Germany. Glastechnisches Laboratorium Schott & Gen was born. Production started in 1886. Original products included optical and thermometer glasses. The following year, a crucial discovery was made: borosilicate, a heat and chemically resistant glass. By it’s 25th year anniversary, the company had grown from an experimental glass factory into an internationally renowned manufacturer of optical and industrial glasses. Soon to be added was fiolax, tube-shaped glass used for vials, ampoules and syringes thus allowing the company to play a significant role in supplying Europe's nascent pharmaceutical industry. Post WW2 USA Army opens new factory in Mainz, West Germany and factory in Jena , East Germany taken over by the DDR State both using same trade name. A large range of souvenirs has since been associated with the Chalet and Mount Buffalo from crafted wooden items, silver spoons, cups etc... The collection includes a broad selection of products that have been sold throughout much of the Chalet's history, each representative of the transient fashions of their period.' (Pg. 114. Historica) "Souvenirs in relation to the chalet were perhaps first mentioned in December 1912, when enterprising locals, Mr J Pass of Porepunkah and Mr C Walker asked for permission to use timber on the mountain for making ornamental souvenirs . They won the D Grade Premiership of 1926 and/or 1927 playing out of Victoria Park at 12 noon, and as a curtain raiser to either Kew or Kew District or East Kew Football Club and after World War 2, North Kew which had now joined Kew as a tenant. Team members were H.L. Barclay (ex Richmond), A. Brierley (ex Collingwood), H. Ely (ex Essendon), Frank Littlefield, J. Marshall and C. Robinson (ex Hawthorn-East Melbourne Cricket Club).
