This book was awarded to Robert Buchanan (PY1899) in 1898 for second prize in Mathematics Form IV. Robert entered Ballarat College in July 1895 (D.O.B 10/5/1882). Original register notes parent as Mrs. Buchanan residing in Alfredton. Former school is noted as S.S.695 Lower VI.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Nellie May Matthews received this book prize in 1896 for first prize in bible. Nellie enrolled in Clarendon Ladies' College in April of 1896 (D.O.B. 3/6/1978). In the original registry it states that father's name is George Browning, occupation Ironmonger and the residence as 98 Neil Street Ballarat. Nellie had a sister, Sarah Bertha Matthews (D.O.B 31/12/1883) who enrolled in the school on 8/2/1898.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. This is a cardboard colourised certificate. It was put out by Victorian Education Department. On top centre is a crest showing two women. A shield with Southern Cross, around the words "Education Dept Victoria", are garlands of gum leaves and gum nuts. At the bottom of the certificate are printed figures of a girl and boy. The girl is knitting something. The boy is holding a saw and a piece of timber. (His knees are scratched.). This book was donated by Principal R E Thwaites to the Ballarat College Library, possibly during his years of tenure (1933-45). Fascinatingly the book contains the signiature of a previous principal Ernest Neville Marryat (tenure 1910-1912). Until 2014 when this book was catalogued to the Victorian Collections database the first names of Principal Marryat had never been known by the school. The discovery of his presumed personal signature has added significantly to the school's written history. H P MacKenzie donated these books to the Ballarat College library in the year that his wife donated money to the school in memory of her parents, Mr and Mrs W Weatherly. The money was used to purchase book shelves and furnishings for a new library and a call was made to old collegians and membersof the school community to donate books to stock the new library. Harold Ponsonby MacKenzie served on Ballarat College council 1925 - 1946. His sons Alastair and Kenneth also attended the school. Alastair served on councils also - BC Council 1957-73, BCC Council 1974-80. Alastair's daughter Mia attended the school 1983-4.
