Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. This booklet contains the favourite sayings and quotations of residents of Warrnambool and surrounding districts. The source of the sayings is listed. It was probably produced as a fund-raiser for an organization or club and sold at Christmas time, perhaps early in the 20th century. This booklet is of high interest because of the many names listed from Warrnambool, Panmure, Framlingham, Nullawarre, Nirranda, Ballangeich, Allansford, Port Fairy Grasmere and other small towns. The booklet not only lists those residents at that time in history but also tells us something about those people, their philosophies and attitudes, through which sayings they chose. Well-known names include those of Terrington, Fidler, Burnie, Uren, Tomlinson, McGinness, Peacock, Murnane and Dallimore. This is a soft cover booklet of 22 pages. It contains the favourite sayings and quotations of people from Warrnambool and surrounding areas. The cover is blue with patterns down the left side and above and under the titles which are printed in dark blue. The pages are bound with white thread and they originally had a metal staple which has been removed. The cover is a little torn and stained. The first page has a blank form which can be filled in to make the booklet a Christmas present.‘A Booklet for Xmas and the New Year From….. Silver tray trophy awarded to competitive cyclist Jack Stanley Robinson in 1939. Jack Stanley Robsinson lived in Canterbury for most of his youth and was a member of the City of Camberwell Amateur Cycling Club in the late 1930s. Jack appears in the press (NLA Trove) as a member of the Malvern cycling team in a March 1934 trial competition of “boys”, and then with increasing frequency in amateur competitions throughout 1935 to 1938. In October 1938 he appears in the Camberwell team. The last entry so far found is in December 1939, still with the Camberwell team. These badges were issued to a member of the Warrnambool Racing Club for the season1957-1958 and includes a male member’s badge and the lady’s badge issued to him. Horse race meetings have been held in Warrnambool since the early days of settlement (late 1840s) and the Warrnambool Racing Club was formed in 1854. Races were first held at the current site of the Warrnambool Racecourse in the late 1850s. Today the chief event of the Warrnambool racing calendar is the May Racing Carnival, held over three days and featuring the well-known Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase.These badges are retained as examples of Warrnambool Racing Club members and ladies badges of the late 1950s..1 A metal badge, four sided, in an irregular shape. The outer rim has gold edging and there is an image in green, red and white of a horse and rider clearing a hurdle. The gold lettering has a white background. At the top of the badge is a metal ring with a brown cord with a metal fastener attached. .2 A gold-coloured badge in the shape of a triangle with gold lettering. These badges all marked W.R.C. appear to come from the Warrnambool Racing Club. The first race meeting in Warrnambool was held in 1848 at Jetty Flat. The first meeting at the present race course was held in 1858 with Warrnambool Racing Club established in 1873.The main event in Warrnambool horse racing today is the May Racing Carnival which features the Grand Annual Steeplechase. It has 33 jumps, the most hurdles of any race in the world over 5,500 metres. These badges are of minor interest as ones that belonged to members and supporters of the Warrnambool Racing Club.1 Silver coloured metal diamond shaped badge fixed to a silver coloured metal horizontal bar.
