The Eureka Stockade was fought on the morning of 03 December 1854. Around 22 soldiers and diggers were killed as the result of the battle. Historian Dorothy Wickham could not find the death registration for John Egan, and after some research she discovered he did not die on the way to Ballarat, but lived to be Court martialled in New Zealand.
