Uniform - Badge, Stokes and Sons, mid 1950's?
Stamped metal uniform badge for MMTB Inspectors. Tramways Board logo at top of badge in silver finish, the words "INSPECTOR" and the scroll outline in brass or gold colour. The area where the inspector's number has been painted on is in brass/gold finish. The number "5" has been painted on in royal blue colour. The enamel finish within the scroll work also finished in royal blue. On rear badge in brass/gold finish, with word "STOKES & SONS MELBOURNE" stamped into . Two metal rings have been soldered onto the rear of the badge and a spring steel clip provided to enable the badge to be clipped to a hat.\ Badge was used by the Donor as part of his work uniform. Metal based match box holder, formed from tin plated steel sheet, folded around all edges to include a printed plastic cover marked "Souvenir of Wattle Park, Melbourne Vic.", including on the sides an image of the Chalet and on reverse, contact phone number (WX1322), and what the venue would cater for. Has a note that is was open on Sundays and Holidays as well. Not known when made or used or who by. Phone numbers with alphanumeric numbers phased out during the late 1950's. Functional object - Badge, K G Luke Melbourne, 1960's
Round silver MMTB Officers and Clerical Staff badge - stamped No. "865" and with raised writing "M&M Tramways Board" with a silver ring through the top of the badge, to allow it to be attached to a key ring. On rear has remains of "K. G. Luke Melb". Does not appear to have been used. 2nd copy added 1/12/2019 from - No. 632. On rear badge two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge to allow a leather strap to be fitted to the badge. Pressed metal uniform badge for the Melbourne Tramways Board, Employees, available all lines. Round pressed steel badge with the words "All Lines" pressed into the badge around the top portion of the badge, the word "TRAMWAY EMPLOYEE" and number "10" pressed into the lower half of the badge -with small horizontal lines within the individual letters. Has a brass finish with the Melbourne Tramways Board logo in the lower part of the badge. On rear badge two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a leather strap with a button hole cut into to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Leather strap secured with a brass rivet. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921. Sign, Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA), "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car", 1950's
Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car". Used for special tours by the AETA. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Manufactured by rolling the outer edges over a 4mm diameter steel rod. Has been painted over a an old sign "Direct to Trotting Showgrounds??? via Abbotsford St 3d". Second sign painted over a sign that had on one side "Via Elsternwick" and "Via Balaclava Road". The signs were received wrapped in part of the "The Age, Thursday March 23 1961" - sample retained - see image 4. Metal Cash Tray for holding coins, formed from stainless steel and welded to give five compartments or areas for coins and one full length slot or opening at the rear for notes and other papers. Used by One Person Operator (OPO) or drivers from the time of the introduction of OPO's on the tramways until the full introduction of Metcard. Collected by Carolyn Dean/Cleak. Badge - ESCo driver, Stokes & Sons Melbourne, 1905
Yields information about the identification methods used by the ESCo to identify their crews to public and has a strong association with the individuals who wore them over time.Pressed metal uniform badge for ESCo Drivers. Round pressed steel badge with the words "ESCo OF V. LTD." pressed into the badge around the top portion of the badge, the word "DRIVER" and number "15" pressed into the lower half of the badge -with small horizontal lines within the individual letters. Appears to have had a nickel silver finish originally. On rear badge two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a leather strap with a button hole cut into to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Has words "STOKES & SONS" stamped in reverse on the lower rear of the badge. Badges of this type shown on ESCo uniforms of 1905 and through to the 20's. Badge - Union badge, Wittenbach & Co, 1930's?
The badge belonged to the Donor's father - Bill Irvin, who was a SEC tram driver. Bill and his elder brother Dan, both drove trams in Ballarat. The Union badge confirmed membeship of the Union and was permitted to be worn on a uniform.Has a strong association with Bill Irvin, SEC tram driver of the 1930's and demonstrates the importance of being a union member at the time and the badge provided by the unionAustralian Tramway Employees Association (Tramways Union) badge. Badge made on a steel/ silver backing with words "Australian Tramway Employees Association" on outer edge of badge with a royal blue enamel background. In centre of badge has the Australian coat of arms with a railway type spoke wheel above the logo and underneath the coat of arms the words "Federated Australia" in a banner. Has a hole in the top of the badge for a steel ring or a method of attachment to a uniform. On back of badge has stamped into the badge "BL 42", possibly indicating Ballarat and badge number. Used on tramcars built by the Adelaide based company of Duncan and Fraser.Demonstrates a Duncan and Fraser Builders' plateOval-shaped enameled steel plate with the words "DUNCAN & FRASER LTD BUILDERS ADELAIDE" in black on a white background within two ovals and other markings. Sign - "Tram Stop Request", mid 1970s
Indicated or provided a location to tram drivers and passengers of a tram stop that trams had to be hailed or be requested to stop or to alight. Has the outline of a Z class tram. Introduced after Z class trams started to be used. A small sign providing details of the route number could be placed on the bottom edge. The 1977-78 MMTB Annual report has a photo of one of these then-new signs.Demonstrates the form of tram stop that the MMTB used in Melbourne that trams had to be signaled to stop at. Style introduced following following the use of Z class trams. Used by the MMTB in an attempt to keep tram tracks clear of motor cars. It seldom worked. Signs would have been fixed to the ends of a tram so it could be seen by motorists. Points of interest in the photograph are the lack of white lines along the tracks, safety zone equipment behind the tram, the "Hail Cars Here" tram stop sign on a steel pole by a traffic light and the style of traffic light. Two advertising panels on the front of the tram advertise "Jex Soap Pads" and the musical "Hair" at the Metro Theatre Bourke St. Two Fords are alongside the tramcar. The original source of photograph unknown. The Musical "Hair" was presented in Melbourne during 1971. Yields information about the location, the streetscape and the trams and vehicles in use at the time. Functional object - Ticket punch - Bell Punch - MT&OCo No. D406, Railway Register Manufacturing Company, 1885c
Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D406. A heavy nickel or chrome plated steel ticket or fare strip canceling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company. Sign - Tram Learner driver "L" plate, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1969
Two of these plates were produced to be used on trams for drivers undergoing their first day of training from the Hawthorn Tram Depot. The 6th Image is of a cutting from The Sun 5 Dec 1969 shows the purpose of the L plate in position on tram 603.
