This factory was situated on the corner of Ballarat and McIntyre Rds in Sunshine Victoria and manufactured sporting goods. Pattie BEERENS (1962- ) Born Sunshine, Victoria Pattie Beerens was enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Ceramics at Federation University in 2018 after completing a Graduate Certificate Visual Art at the Victorian College of Arts, University of Melbourne in 2017.Artists' Statement: Red. Broken structure on its side supported with an unrecognisable form. It is cast from an electronics packaging carton. Triangular arrows piece the structure with a spider on either side. I created fertility spiders to protect the Minoan women from predators. I collected spiders as a child to ward off the bullies and, like the octopus, spiders have eight legs and a head and body. The stylised spiders reference links between the Minoan octopus and other symbols of fertility. The natural light elongates the form in a shadow reflection on the floor. The form is surrounded by black space. This piece took on an anger I felt on the day that [Malcolm] Turnbull was overthrown and materialises the bully-boy behaviour we were witnessing. What is most interesting about this piece is that I created it as a Minoan reflection. It dawned on me , when I had it ready for the kiln - on the day that Dutton challenged the Turnbull leadership, that my anger was both reflective and contemporary because nothing seemed to have changed. By around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established, and during the gold rush period also became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for the area began on 28th May 1860 when the BRAYBROOK ROAD BOARD DISTRICT was proclaimed, however this authority was soon superseded on 23rd January 1871 when the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK came into existence. The Shire of Braybrook continued as the local government authority for the district until the CITY OF SUNSHINE was proclaimed in 1951. ANZAC Day 2021 The Ukrainian Association Sunshine (UAS), joined other community organisations in commemorating ANZAC Day on April 25th 2021. UAS members gathered at the Sunshine RSL cenotaph for the Dawn Service during which, President Andrew Makohon and Oksana Makohon laid a wreath on behalf of the Ukrainian Community. Members and families later gathered at the UAS Hall in Ardeer for a flag raising ceremony and breakfast. Our youngest members took part in raising and then lowering the Australian and Ukrainian flags to half mast, learning about the significance of the ceremony and the importance of Australia’s National Day of Remembrance. This book/magazine is a record of the company's tasks in WW11. It acknowledges the "debt owed to the armed forces involvement and role in defeating the enemy". The Australian operations of this company were originally founded by Hugh V. McKay in the 1890s. In 1906, H.V. McKay moved his manufacturing operations from Ballarat to Braybrook Junction (later Sunshine) on the western outskirts of Melbourne. In 1921 the company became H.V. McKay Pty Ltd. In 1930 it merged with the Australian operations of the Canadian agricultural implement and tractor manufacturer Massey Harris, to become H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. Throughout World War II H.V. McKay Massey Harris exported over 20,000 Sunshine drills, disc harrows and binders to England to facilitate the increase in food production. The building is the Glendale Park Primary School situated in Sunshine West and opened in 1976. The multicultural school with 150+ students from thirty different cultural backgrounds runs a very inclusive program. The students from Bulla Primary School visited on the 3rd March 1993 and enjoyed the day learning about the school and participating in a number of activities with the students. The children from Bulla Primary School visited Glengala Primary School near Sunshine in March 1993. During their visit they joined in a number of activities with the Glengala children. In this photograph they were practicing soft ball skills in the covered courtyard area. Glangala school was one of the newer schools built in the Western suburbs in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Many displaced people who migrated to Australia after World War 2 brought similar tubs with them as part of their luggage. The tubs were valued by the migrants because they were used for washing clothes and other laundry items, and for bathing children and even adults. The tub in our possession was brought out to Australia in 1950 by the Pierzak family who eventually settled in North Sunshine, Victoria. The following story about the Pierzak family has been provided by the daughter Halina Wlodarczyk (nee Pierzak). The father Stanislaw Pierzak was born on the 26th of July 1916 in Zbrza, and the mother Teodozja (Teodozia) Szalas on the 5th of March 1919 in Goleciny, both villages in the Kielce district of Poland. In 1940 they were both taken by the German Army to work as slave labour on farms in Germany. Stanislaw worked in the Saxonia area and Teodozja near Dillingen. The work was hard, and when Teodozja contracted pneumonia she was told that she would not be given any food if she did not work. After the war the displaced persons, as they were called, were settled in various barracks and camps organised by the United States Army. Stanislaw and Teodozja married in Gablingen, Bavaria, Germany, and Halina was born in the camp at Gablingen in 1949. The displaced people were given the choice of several countries if they wanted to migrate from war torn Germany, and so the Pierzak family chose Australia. The Pierzak family set sail from Naples, Italy aboard the ship General M. B. Stewart and arrived in Sydney on the 17th of April 1950. The men and women had to stay in separate quarters, and many passengers were so sick that they did not think they would survive the journey. In Australia they lived in migrant camps in NSW at Bathurst, Orange, Parkes and Cowra. To pay off their fares to Australia migrants were required to work under contract for 2 years. Stanislaw Pierzak worked in Broken Hill NSW returning to visit his family every 3 to 4 months. The son John was born in the Red Cross building at the Parkes camp in 1952. In 1953 the whole family moved to Melbourne and lived in a converted garage in Victor Street, North Sunshine. In 1954 the family bought a bungalow on a block of land in Compton Parade, North Sunshine, where eventually they built a house. Stanislaw Pierzak worked at Steelweld in Ashley Street, Braybrook travelling there on his bicycle, while Teodozja Pierzak found work at Smorgon in West Footscray. Stanislaw and Teodozja Pierzak lived in North Sunshine for the rest of their lives, and Mrs Pierzak always said that Sunshine was the best place in the world.Tubs like this which belonged to displaced people were highly valued possessions and are of historic significance. They were brought out to Australia after World War 2 by many migrating displaced families. The tubs were used for washing activities in the camps in Germany, and the migrant camps in Australia, and also when people lived in bungalows in Australia before they built houses with laundries and bathrooms.Oval shaped galvanised iron tub with two rigid handles, one at each end. The top of the tub is larger than the base. The galvanising is deteriorating in some parts which show a whitish appearance. The International House Squash Court was officially opened on July 16, 1969, by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe. The court was funded by the Sunshine Foundation and Dame Hilda Stevenson. Squash became popular with students, but the court was eventually demolished in 2002 to make way for the Founders Building. Rupertswood Mansion was the Sunbury residence of the Clarke family from 1874 until 1922 when H.V.McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame bought it from Hon. W.L. Russell Clarke in 1922. After the death of H.V.McKay in 1926, it was purchased by W. Naughton who then sold the mansion and 700 acres of land to the Salesian Fathers, who are the present owners.
