pocket scales, 1920's
The pocket balance was first created in 1770 by Richard Salter in the UK. From the late 18th century onwards these small scales were widely used in markets, grocers and farm shops – wherever people needed to be able to verify the weight of goods to be purchased in order to calculate the correct pricing. Because it was portable, and simple to use, the pocket balance was ideal for weighing goods where accuracy was not required. This balance appears to have been used for weighing fish.Pocket spring scales made of steel. There is a spring fixed at one end with a hook to which an object can be attached at the other. At the top of the scales there. is a metallic ring to fasten the object. This is attached to the main body which on one side has measurements inscribed into the metal surface. Inside the body is a spring loaded mechanism which moves along the scales when weight is added to a hook at the bottom of the shaft. At the top - POCKET BALANCE ARROW and the letters M P inside an oval.scales pocket-balance spring-balance measuring-instrument -

hair nets, Mid-second half 20th century
Hair nets were a popular hair accessory in the 1940’s for both daytime and work. They were a rayon or cotton crocheted net fitted with a headband. The band was worn around the top of the head and all of the hair would be encased in the snood. The band would have to be pinned in place. Many women of the 1940s and 1950s went to the beauty shop once a week to have their hair "done," then slept in hairnets every night to keep their "do" in place until the next visit. These hair nets were worn by Marjorie Burton. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from a middle-class working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made manyof Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. These items are examples of women's hair fashion during the mid 29th century.Five women's hair nets. Clothing, Top Hat and Box, Early 20th Century
This hat belonged to a Warrnambool undertaking firm, Beattie and Phillips. This firm was established by Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips in 1865 and was originally situated in Koroit Street. Beattie’s son, James, took over the business in 1916 and moved to new premises at 82 Fairy Street about 1928. In 1945 the business management was transferred to James Leahy and the firm continued until 2000. The top hat was used by both James Beattie and James Leahy and would have been one of several used by the employees in this undertaking business. The suppliers of the hat were Cramond and Dickson (note that the name ‘Cramond’ is misspelt on the hat itself). John Glass Cramond and James Dickson established their clothing and drapery and ironmongery business in Warrnambool in 1855 and it continued to operate in Liebig Street until 1974. This is a highly significant item for three reasons: 1. It belonged to, and was used by, two directors of the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips, a most prominent business in Warrnambool for 135 years 2. It was supplied by the firm of Cramond and Dickson, a dominant retail shop in Warrnambool for 119 years 3. It is an important example of a social custom of the past – the wearing of formal wear, including a top hat, by funeral employees (even to the extent of taking the hat by rail for funerals etc outside of Warrnambool) This is a black top hat with paper and silk inserts in the inside crown and a brown leather lining stitched on to the inside of the brim. There is black corded ribbon around the brim and around the outside of the hat. The brim is made of felt with the crown showing a shiny pile. There is a small round metal insert on the top of the crown. A piece of a newspaper dated 1st January 1931 is stitched into the inside of the brimInside the hat on the bottom of the crown – ‘Extra Quality’; ‘Crammond (sic) & Dickson Warrnambool’ with a stamp logo on the silk – a British logo with a lion and a unicorn with the words – ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’ and ‘Dieu et Mon Droit’ In biro on inside crown are the letters ‘J.L.’ undertaker's hat, beattie and phillips, christopher beattie, henry phillips, warrnambool history -

Ruler, G T Le Couteur Chemist x 2, Early 20th century
These rulers have been distributed by the Warrnambool chemist, George Le Couteur as advertising tools for his business. George Le Couteur operated a pharmacy at 78 Liebig Street, Warrnambool from 1896 to 1908. Born in Warrnambool in 1856 Le Couteur was educated at the Anglican-sponsored Warrnambool Common School No. 691 and then spent four years at Beechworth Grammar School. He was apprenticed to the Warrnambool chemist, Michael Ryan and then worked as a chemist in Kyneton and Melbourne. When he returned to Warrnambool he took over the business of Frank Uren in Liebig Street, building a second storey on to the building. He was very active in community affairs in Warrnambool. He left Warrnambool in 1908 to open a pharmacy in Hawthorn, Melbourne. When he retired in 1935 he was the oldest registered chemist in Victoria. The information hand printed on the back of one of the rulers has an historical inaccuracy in that J.A. Bromfield was not the first known chemist in Warrnambool. These rulers are of interest because of their connection to the pharmacy business of George Le Couteur He was a prominent person in Warrnambool in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These two oblong wooden rulers have imperial measurements ( to 12 inches). There is black printing on both sides advertising a Warrnambool chemist. One ruler is much stained and has a piece missing on the centre top edge. The other ruler has information on one side hand printed in black ink.‘With compliments of G.T. This bottle was used in the pharmacy business of H.O.Wilkinson. He had a chemist’s shop in Liebig Street, Warrnambool (number 119 Liebig Street today) early in the 20th century. The dates found for this business are from 1906 to 1914. Wilkinson also had pharmacies in Melbourne and Maryborough. His cough mixture, Wilkinson’s Pectorine, selling at two shillings and sixpence a bottle, was advertised as ‘the finest preparation for the cure of stubborn coughs and colds’. Bottle, J Lescal Warrnambool, 1920's
These marble stopper bottles came from the Warrnambool aerated waters factory of Joseph Lescai. A marble stopper bottle was one which was filled upside down so that as soon as the filling stopped the stopper was forced down to seal the bottle against the rubber ring. Pressure inside the bottle would keep the marble pressed against the top of the bottle. To open the bottle the marble was pressed down where it would fall into the neck chamber below. The marble would stay inside the neck chamber when the bottle was tilted up for drinking. Joseph Lescai and his brother, James had fruit shops in Warrnambool and in the 1920s Joseph Lescai began to produce cordial and soft drinks at his Fairy Street shop. The cordial manufacturing was then re-located to a site in Fairy Street close to Raglan Parade and the business, known as Warrnambool Cordials Pty Ltd, was operated then by a group of Warrnambool businessmen and later by Thomas Hill in the 1930s. In the 1940s the business was purchased by the Flett brothers, Frederick and Charles, and in the 1960s the business was sold to Thomas McKenzie and retailed under the name of McKenzie’s Cordials. The business was still operating in the 1970s. These bottles are significant because they come from the Warrnambool aerated water factory of Joseph Lescai, probably in the late 1920s. The business commenced by Joseph Lescai became Warrnambool Cordials Pty Ltd and this was a prominent business in Warrnambool for 50 years or more. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years. These three bottles are marble-stopper green glass bottles. They have a rounded base and body with a deep indentation in the glass at the top of the body to form a narrow neck chamber. The necks have small round indentations in the glass. The tops of the bottles have moulded glass and an opening. Details on the aerated waters manufacturer are impressed into the glass on the side of the bottles. A round green marble is loose in the neck chamber. Rubber rings in the necks of the bottles are missing. One of the bottles has a wooden stopper but this may not have been an original. His cordial business flourished and was bought by a company of local businessmen before being sold to Thomas Hill in the 1930s. Bottle, Sheldricks Beer Bottle - Green with tag, Early 20th century
This bottle was found under a building some years ago (Hand’s tobacconist shop, Liebig Street, Warrnambool). It is believed to be a beer bottle from the Warrnambool brewery of Sheldrick and Co. In the early 1890s Richard Sheldrick sold out and by 1892 a group of Warrnambool businessmen was operating the brewery. In 1894 it was sold to William McGee and Company and in 1922 the brewery closed when the Ballarat, Melbourne Co-operative and Carlton and United Breweries took over the business. This bottle is of interest as an example of a beer bottle from Sheldrick’s New Brewery. Canisters, Cash Carriers (Swinton), Early 20th century
These cash carriers were used in the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. They were manufactured by Lamson of U.S.A. William Lamson of Massachusetts, U.S.A. first patented cash carriers in 1882 and originally the cash balls were carried from counter to cashier via a wire and pulley system. These Swinton cash carriers were carried via pneumatic tubes. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool, selling groceries, hardware, glassware and china. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. After William Swinton’s death his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split, with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, produce and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. These cash carriers are of great interest firstly as a memento of business practices in the past and secondly because they were used in the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. The current Swinton business in Timor Street Warrnambool is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the name Swinton associated with Timor Street businesses for 152 years, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia.
