Photo of the Charing Cross with three bogie trams at the intersection, SEC publicity photo c1950. Two of the bogies crossing on the Eaglehawk - Quarry Hill line have white or cream strips on the lower edge of the body. No 26 has the destination of North Bendigo, though it is on Golden Square line with the driver standing just inside the doorway. In the background is the fountain, the Gardens and Pall Mall. Functional object - ESCO Tram Destination Symbol, Circa 1913
Tramcar Destination Sign used by the Electric Supply Company of Victoria on the Ballarat Electric Trams. The ESCo operated the Ballarat electric trams from 1905 to 1934. Tramcar destination symbols originated in a time when a large part of the population was illiterate. The symbols were displayed on the front of the tram enabling the public to easily identify a tram's destination. The destination signs had a painted circle in the middle, the colour indicated the tram's destination. This particular sign has a yellow circle indicating the destination was Lydiard Street North. See Reg No. 5488.Yields information about how the public related to the trams and their destinations.Square sheet of steel, painted dark green and with a painted yellow circle 125mm in diameter in the middle. Has two circular holes near one side with an extended slot for fastening over hooks or screw heads. Has at least two layers paint with slightly different shades; all layers of paint are flaking. Functional object - Tramcar door square key, State Electricity Commission of Victoria - Ballarat office, Mid 1930's?
Used by tram crews to secure doors in the open or closed position and to open the used ticket box. Part of the items issued to each traffic crew or maintenance staff to access or lock tramcars.Would have been issued at the time to a driver or conductor with the cap or traffic number of 18Piece of chrome plated steel rod bent at 90 degrees and shaped at longer end to give a square shape for use in external doors on SECV Ballarat Trams - known as a square key.
