This six-postcard group is the third in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. The 57th had a company of men largely from Bendigo and Eaglehawk. These postcards are from his personal album. Many are annotated in Dawson's hand with explanatory notes on the subject. Letter in relation to unidentified soldier. Son of Mrs. Barbour, presumably a member of the Victorian Regiment, who died of illness during the Boer War during the year of 1900 in South Africa. Leather flying helmet worn by John Arthur Remington Alexander. He had pre War service in Area 67B Senior Cadets as Lt Commanding C Coy in Bendigo. Enlisted in the AIF No 2237 in 14th Reinforcements (August)1.8.1917 in the Aust Flying Corp (AFC) age 31 years 5 months with the rank 2nd Class Air Mechanic. Embark for England 30.10.1917, hospital at sea with Influenza, posted to 3 Sqd AFC, embark for France 8.3.1918, as a Photographer in civilian life he flew Photographic missions over enemy occupied trenches and lines. Embark for Aust 6.5 1919, discharged from the AIF 9.7.1919. Brown leather flying helmet worn to keep warm. Fully enclosed down to shoulders with an opening for the face. Khaki jacket - old pattern. Four front pockets - held shut with dark copper buttons. Rising Sun Collar Badges. Lt. Colonel metal rank badges on epaulettes. the jacket has plain khaki lining. But has striped lining in the arms. It has a ribbon bar showing four medals and i M.I.D. leaf. The arms have a circular red/black colour patch, 3.3 cm diameter. 2. The main tasks undertaken by technicians operating the KLIMSCH Commodore large format camera were enlargements and reductions of map reproduction material. seen in photo .1P is at the operating console. See item 6189.4P for more information and photos of CPL Whaling operating the KLIMSCH camera. Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The WILD OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation shown in photos .3P and .4P was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. On this parade WO1 Bill Jones received his commission and by promotion to Captain from CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol. Command of the unit was handed over to LTCOL Rob McHenry. It is probable the commissioning and handover ceremonies occurred on the CO’s Parade. Uniform issued to SGT. "McCLAREN M". Reg No. 3/52075 2 FLO REGT R.A.A. 1. Coat - khaki colour wool fabric uniform great coat. Double breasted with six buttons. Collar which fastens with buttons and metal hook and eye fastener. Shoulder epaulettes with button. Back has full length inverted pleat and lower vent with two buttons concealed closure. Buttons are gold coloured plastic with metal shank with raised emblem - crown over cannon carriages artillery. Double half belt with three buttons back at waist. Two front inset pockets with flap. Manufacturers stamp on light brown coloured cotton half lining, sleeves beige colour lining. 2. Beret - black colour wool felt with black colour cotton fabric lining and black colour leather trim. This three-photograph group is the fifth in a series of records of items in the collection of Edgar Dawson DCM. Dawson was the Regimental Sergeant Major of 57th Battalion, AIF. C Company of the 57th was composed of men drawn from Echuca, Eaglehawk and Bendigo. Three photographs taken by a commercial photographer in Killarney Ireland. These photographs illustrate how men from different units relaxed together on leave. 1. A group of AIF soldiers enjoying leave outside the Graham Hotel, Killarney. The soldier on left is a corporal in 2nd Division Pioneers, next to him is a private in the 1st Division, then a signaller from 5th Division with two years' overseas service chevrons and two wound stripes, RSM Hector Dawson, 57th Btn, then a Gallipoli veteran with what seems to be a Fifth Division patch, unknown, and lastly a 1st Division sergeant. 2. A relaxed group outside the Graham Hotel. RSM Dawson is third from the right. Second from the left is an officer of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. 3. RSM Dawson (hatless) and comrades setting off to likely see the famous local lakes. This is a set of 24 photographs taken at the Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Mess Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR), Fortuna Villa circa 1990. Photos of personnel and their guests was taken on their arrival in locations inside Fortuna Villa and its surrounding gardens. The Ball and Dinner was held in the gardens of Fortuna Villa and in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. Australian Army Catering Corps staff provided the catering. Refer to item 6455.14P for additional photographs taken at the Summer Ball. An additional 21 photos of less historical value have been scanned but not published.This is a set of 24 photographs taken at the Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa circa 1990.
